The suspension\u2019s spring rates and damping setup also follow the design philosophy of the 911 GT3 RS (991.2). <strong>PASM lowers the car by a full 30 mm compared with the standard setup.<\/strong> There\u2019s a NACA duct in the front hood to cool the brakes, a swan-neck rear wing, and the engine\u2019s air intake box has been relocated into the cabin. Combined with a newly developed air filter, this gives the interior a distinctive, deep, resonant sound.<\/p>\n<p>The GT4 is already equipped to hold its own as a race car, yet Porsche has added even more hardware\u2014enough to make you think, \u201cJust how far did they go?\u201d The result is a race car that\u2019s road-legal.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_Underway\"><\/span>Getting Underway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When you start the engine, its deep, throaty note fills the cabin. <strong>With the same engine, the startup sound is almost identical to the GT3\u2019s.<\/strong> The difference is that the engine sits right behind you, making it feel even more dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>I select D using the PDK selector, which looks like a manual transmission\u2019s gear lever, and set off. But the GT4 RS doesn\u2019t move just because I\u2019ve selected Drive. <strong>Like the GT3 and other models, it uses a PDK without creep.<\/strong> To get moving, you need to give it a little throttle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/E99618E1-E955-4765-B374-1A5A9F7A8901-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS suspension\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30086-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30086-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30086\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/FA370C60-4212-4115-82E4-07613E363343-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS suspension\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30086-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GT3-derived suspension peeks through the gap in the wheel arch<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/DA509F81-9D8E-4EE5-9D24-3818F11377A9-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS Weissach Package seat\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I pull out of the parking lot, the car feels almost surprisingly ordinary. It doesn\u2019t have the intense sense of tire contact you get in a 992 Carrera or 992 GT3; if anything, the ride feels a little more forgiving. Even so, the GT4 RS quickly builds speed.<\/p>\n<p>I cruise at town speeds of around 30 to 50 km\/h. My first thought is, \u201c<strong>This is surprisingly easy to drive normally.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can tell the suspension is a little firmer than the GT4\u2019s, but the difference in feel isn\u2019t dramatic. On smooth roads, it\u2019s perfectly comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>The engine\u2019s low-rev soundtrack comes through clearly in the cabin. Unlike some modern cars, which suddenly go quiet once you pull away because of noise regulations, this one keeps the sound present. In fact, it feels louder and more dramatic with the windows closed. I suspect that\u2019s because the engine is right behind you, and its intake is inside the cabin too.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_It_Handle\"><\/span>How Does It Handle?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Once I\u2019ve settled in, I pick up the pace a little and explore the car\u2019s cornering ability, leaving PASM in Normal mode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The initial steering response is surprisingly gentle.<\/strong> It\u2019s certainly sharper than a standard Cayman, but compared with a 991 or 992 GT3, the response feels almost a little underwhelming. The engine\u2019s different location may play a part, but on the same day, I found the 992 Carrera S Cabriolet with PASM Sport Suspension felt sharper.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/57DE257B-23A7-4304-A645-AF99B909FB4C-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>That makes it easy to drive, in a good way.<\/strong> You could think of it as a high-performance extension of the standard Cayman. It doesn\u2019t demand that you tense up behind the wheel; you can relax and enjoy a flowing drive on a twisty road.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the RS badge is no empty boast. <strong>Its stability and grip through corners are astonishing.<\/strong> There\u2019s no way to explore its limits on public roads; it sweeps through every corner with enormous reserves of composure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It likely comes into its own at much higher speeds, where its downforce can really work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Japan\u2019s so-called \u201ctouge\u201d\u2014winding mountain roads\u2014the car seems to rely simply on its suspension setup and capabilities to get around the corners. It\u2019s clear that the GT4 RS is nowhere near reaching its full potential.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30075\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/14B2EF24-754B-4108-928B-C84784D5F820-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS center console\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Switching PASM to Sport makes the suspension noticeably firmer.<\/strong> You feel more of the road\u2019s bumps and surface changes, while response and turn-in sharpen further. Many Porsche models have only a subtle difference between PASM Normal and Sport, but on the GT4 RS, the change is quite pronounced.<\/p>\n<p>To put it bluntly, <strong>in Japan, its performance is largely wasted unless you take it to a race circuit.<\/strong> It\u2019s a serious case of having more capability than you can use. I\u2019m not exaggerating\u2014I really mean it. If you\u2019re lucky enough to buy a GT4 RS, I hope you\u2019ll take it to the track. I think that\u2019s where this car will be happiest.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lightning-Fast_PDK\"><\/span>Lightning-Fast PDK<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>One of the car\u2019s standout features is the remarkable performance of its PDK.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Porsche\u2019s PDK transmission has always been exceptionally quick, with very little shift shock. I\u2019ve driven all kinds of cars, and in my view, <strong>it\u2019s unquestionably the best transmission in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the GT4 RS, Porsche has made that PDK even better.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/308A72C4-CB35-4BAD-93CB-45BA09123951-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS PDK\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In automatic mode, it downshifts with such perfect timing that you\u2019d almost think the car could see the corner ahead. Then it snaps through the gears with incredible precision. <strong>The way it changes gear\u2014bam, bam\u2014is straight out of a racing video game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The experience gets even more exciting when you switch to manual mode and use the paddles. Porsche says it has further refined the downshift control in the GT4 RS, and the speed of the shifts is genuinely thrilling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/6BB6560E-374C-47A9-8EF0-EEF3A89C246C-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS front fender\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30066\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/AEEF7AE3-5B88-410C-AB39-EFEB71A3DCE6-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS exhaust\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pull the left paddle twice in quick succession, shifting from fourth to third and then second, and the flat-six barks out two quick \u201cvroom, vroom\u201d blips as it completes the downshifts in the blink of an eye. I\u2019ve never experienced anything this fast. I\u2019ll go so far as to say that no matter how expensive the supercar, its shift control can\u2019t match this.<\/p>\n<p>The PDK is so good, you could happily eat three bowls of rice just thinking about it. Some people lament that the GT4 RS isn\u2019t available with a manual transmission, but I\u2019d urge them to try this PDK first. You\u2019ll quickly realize that no human can shift manually with the speed and precision needed to unlock this car\u2019s full potential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/gt4rs\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Next page \u2192 The GT4 RS engine and sound, plus my verdict<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Engine and Sound<\/h4>\n<p>As you\u2019d expect, <strong>the GT4 RS sounds seriously exciting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The intake sound rushing in through the ducts where the rear window would normally be is especially intense. <strong>You can clearly hear the engine breathing.<\/strong> I doubt many people have ever heard an engine\u2019s intake sound this distinctly. I certainly hadn\u2019t\u2014until I drove this car.<\/p>\n<p>My 991.1 GTS also pipes the engine\u2019s intake sound into the cockpit through a sound symposer tuned specifically for the GTS, but the GT4 RS takes that idea to a whole new volume. <strong>In both cars, the sound feels more dramatic with the windows closed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30070-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30070-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30070\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/CB917BA8-665B-42F9-8DEA-234AB528D232-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS intake duct\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30070-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">718 Cayman GT4 RS intake duct<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_30072-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30072-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30072\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/0A4C51ED-3061-42EC-9E76-F2F0B618591A-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS intake duct\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30072-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The intake duct runs directly into the engine compartment inside the cabin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the revs climb, you hear a rushing \u201cshwoosh\u201d of air. It blends with the engine noise in the cabin and the exhaust note outside to create a wonderfully race-bred soundtrack. The engine sits closer to you than it does in the GT3, and you hear it directly from inside the cabin\u2014<strong>it\u2019s like a live performance by the GT3 engine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On downshifts, the rev-matching blip adds a short, sharp \u201cpschoop!\u201d of intake noise. It\u2019s a sound unlike anything I\u2019ve heard before.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30078\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/DD2FCBBB-C565-4E79-9A21-75D07CDC7C19-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS instrument panel\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a straight, I press firmly on the accelerator and watch the tachometer needle leap upward. The way it surges is extraordinary. <strong>As it approaches 9,000 rpm, it seems to gather even more momentum\u2014just like the GT3.<\/strong> I know plenty of high-revving engines, but none build revs with the same accelerating urgency and drama as Porsche\u2019s GT3 engine. The way it spins is simply superb.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no question that the power is immense. If I had to point out a difference, <strong>the GT4 RS\u2019s mid-engine layout doesn\u2019t give it quite the same relentless, efficient traction as the rear-engined 911.<\/strong> Even so, the acceleration is still enough to make your face tense up. It\u2019s pretty much everything you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Verdict<\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019ve often said that the 911 GT3 is a different beast from the regular Carrera models, and that the GT3 and the range-topping Carrera GTS are separated by a huge gap. I still feel the same way.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to the Cayman GT4 and GT4 RS, <strong>I\u2019d describe their driving feel as an extension of the standard Cayman.<\/strong> In other words, the GT4 RS is the ultimate Cayman, but it doesn\u2019t feel as distinct from the Carrera as the 911 GT3 does.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that the GT4 RS is in a different league when it comes to performance. I\u2019m talking specifically about how it feels to drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/AB0B1A24-8D69-45DD-95AF-59B5334E0885-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/3732E17B-994C-46B1-9ED1-F13DDCCB4473-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS rear glass\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why my impression is that <strong>the GT4 RS might be more usable in everyday driving than you\u2019d expect.<\/strong> That said, it\u2019s practically a race car, so I\u2019m not going to claim it\u2019s ideal for commuting, dates, or long-distance touring. Those uses aren\u2019t really what it\u2019s built for. But I do think it has a wider range of everyday situations where you can use\u2014and enjoy\u2014it than the GT3.<\/p>\n<p>That impression comes from the engine sound, the suspension tuning, and the gear ratios. <strong>In a GT3, driving around town without being able to rev the engine can sometimes feel frustrating. The GT4 RS seems to cause that frustration a little less.<\/strong> You can enjoy the sound even at low revs, and the gearing isn\u2019t excessively short, so stop-and-go traffic isn\u2019t too taxing.<\/p>\n<p>The ride can be bouncy on rough roads, but it isn\u2019t especially uncomfortable, and the steering has a welcome touch of softness.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/D71FD861-FC0B-4E74-8AA6-5DFB73C37D34-853x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4 RS rear\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The owner of this car has also owned several other high-performance cars, including a GT3. When I asked what they thought of the GT4 RS, they said, \u201c<strong>It\u2019s easier to use and drive than a GT3 and cars like it. I\u2019ve really taken to it, and it\u2019s one I\u2019d like to keep for a long time.<\/strong>\u201d So it seems my impressions weren\u2019t far off.<\/p>\n<p>After driving the GT4 RS, I like it even more. If I were choosing based purely on personal preference, I\u2019d take the GT4 RS over the GT3.
