Manual Driving Is Fun<\/strong>,\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"2d1eLXPy44\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/boxster_202210\/\">\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306eMT\u8eca\u306e\u904b\u8ee2\u304c\u4f55\u500d\u3082\u697d\u3057\u304f\u306a\u308b\uff01MT\u8eca\u306e\u30d6\u30ea\u30c3\u30d4\u30f3\u30b0\u3092\u3064\u3044\u306b\u7fd2\u5f97\u3002<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306eMT\u8eca\u306e\u904b\u8ee2\u304c\u4f55\u500d\u3082\u697d\u3057\u304f\u306a\u308b\uff01MT\u8eca\u306e\u30d6\u30ea\u30c3\u30d4\u30f3\u30b0\u3092\u3064\u3044\u306b\u7fd2\u5f97\u3002&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/boxster_202210\/embed\/#?secret=2d1eLXPy44\" data-secret=\"2d1eLXPy44\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>and received a message saying, \u201c<strong>I\u2019d love to read about the kinds of mistakes you made while learning to drive a manual<\/strong>,\u201d so today I want to share that story.<\/p>\n<p>I think I struggled with driving a manual more than most people and made plenty of mistakes along the way (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t something I picked up overnight, and while I\u2019m still developing my skills, I\u2019d like to take this opportunity to look back on my experiences.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Manual Driving: My Mistakes<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Stopped in the Middle of the Road with Hazard Lights On<\/h4>\n<p>Determined to \u201c<strong>learn to drive a manual<\/strong>,\u201d I bought a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/goodby-bmw320i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMW 320i<\/a>, and the day after it was delivered, on the way back from dropping my daughter off at kindergarten, I couldn\u2019t get moving at a red light and ended up stopping with my hazard lights on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_3180-800x533-1-700x480-1.jpg\" alt=\"BMW320i\" width=\"700\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking back, I feel really sorry for causing trouble\u2026 but the more nervous I got, the more I stalled and couldn\u2019t get going at all. I thought, \u201c<strong>If this keeps up, the light will turn red\u2026!<\/strong>\u201d and instinctively turned on the hazard lights.<\/p>\n<p>My heart was racing and I was sweating from the tension, so after all the cars behind me passed, I slowly moved forward, pulled over to the shoulder, calmed down, and managed to drive home very slowly.<\/p>\n<p>The drivers behind me were very kind and didn\u2019t honk even once, so since then, whenever I see a car that\u2019s slow to start at a green light, I think, \u201c<strong>Maybe they\u2019re still getting used to driving a manual\u2026!<\/strong>\u201d and watch with a warm heart. lol<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Driving with the Handbrake Engaged<\/h4>\n<p>My BMW 320i had a manual handbrake, and one time I thought, \u201c<strong>Huh? I\u2019m fully engaged, but the car just won\u2019t pick up speed or move smoothly\u2026<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_5851-1280x960-1.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW320i\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Frightened, I pulled over to check and realized I had been driving with the handbrake still on\u2026!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure there was a warning light near the speedometer, but I was so nervous I didn\u2019t notice a thing.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily I caught it early, but if I had kept driving like that, it could have ended badly.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Too Slow to Start, Got Overtaken<\/h4>\n<p>When I first started driving a manual, I was very careful about starting from a stop.<\/p>\n<p>I focused all my attention on not stalling and getting moving safely.<\/p>\n<p>But one time, after successfully starting and moving a bit, a Lexus behind me aggressively overtook me.<\/p>\n<p>When I glanced over, I saw an elderly gentleman glaring at me as he passed, and I remember feeling shocked in many ways.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Couldn\u2019t Start Even After Someone Let Me Go<\/h4>\n<p>Starting from a stoplight is manageable because you can prepare yourself, but sudden starts were difficult.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when waiting to turn right, sometimes a kind driver would let me go, but <strong>I often couldn\u2019t start smoothly and ended up taking a long time<\/strong> in those early days.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, I\u2019d think, <strong>\u201cThanks, but you don\u2019t have to be so kind\u2026!\u201d or \u201cPlease, no cars behind me\u2026\u201d<\/strong> and pray as I drove. lol<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Intended to Shift from 3rd to 4th but Went to 2nd Instead<\/h4>\n<p>Once I got somewhat used to starting, I often found myself \u201c<strong>shifting from 3rd to 4th but accidentally going into 2nd<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought I\u2019d shifted into 4th, but suddenly the engine revved up with a \u201c<strong>gyuiin<\/strong>\u201d sound, and I panicked, looking down to see I was in 2nd gear.<\/p>\n<p>Also, when I was in 4th, I sometimes got confused and wondered, \u201c<strong>Wait, was this 6th gear? What was it again\u2026<\/strong>\u201d (Maybe my memory isn\u2019t great\u2026)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/DDBCA250-E4FA-4A5C-BAC0-0E0F932113A0-1280x854-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche GT3\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Putting It in Neutral Before Starting on a Hill<\/h4>\n<p>This happened when I was a bit more comfortable driving: I was stopped on a steep slope just before a parking lot exit, where a security guard told me to wait.<\/p>\n<p>Since the light ahead wasn\u2019t green yet, I put the car in neutral and waited, but when it was time to go, <strong>I forgot to shift into gear and the car started rolling backward.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I slammed on the brake and avoided trouble, but <strong>I was really glad there was no car behind me<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, this is a minor thing, but when parking on a slight incline, I\u2019d put the shift lever in R (reverse) to park, then after finishing my errand and starting the engine, I\u2019d forget it was still in R and release the clutch, causing the car to \u201c<strong>jerk<\/strong>\u201d and stall several times.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Learn by Doing<\/h3>\n<p>I made lots of mistakes, but <strong>after driving every day for a week, I surprisingly got the hang of the basic operations quickly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For three years after removing my automatic-only license restriction, I only practiced manual driving once every few months, so I didn\u2019t improve at all during that time\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I truly believe that driving a manual is a \u201c<strong>learn by doing<\/strong>\u201d kind of skill.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_3998.jpg\" alt=\"MT Suzuki Swift Sport\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/>Since I started driving manuals again, I\u2019ve become a safer driver than before.<\/p>\n<p>Because I have to downshift myself to slow down, I\u2019m much more aware of things like <strong>what the traffic lights two ahead are doing and whether pedestrians or cars might suddenly appear from the side<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now I can drive most manual cars to some extent (I was happy not to stall even once when I got to drive a 964 MT), and I look forward to experiencing many more manuals in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Driving a Manual Transmission The other day, I wrote an article titled \u201cI Finally Mastered Blipping the Boxster!
