The first things that catch your eye are the large cooling grille and radiator. At the rear, it features a dual center-exit exhaust.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-inch wheels look very substantial and large, perhaps because the car itself is small, and inside them are large red brake calipers. The size of the calipers relative to the wheels is just right, making it clear this isn\u2019t just for show with oversized wheels and brake calipers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/254D6E1D-ECE0-4E5C-AEFB-9C10182C4AEE-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW sports seats\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Inside, there are impressive sports seats that clearly set it apart from the standard MINI model.<\/strong> The seats offer strong lateral support, with thick cushions that are very comfortable. Personally, I really like BMW-style seats.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_Impressions_from_the_Start\"><\/span>First Impressions from the Start<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When starting the engine, I expected a more aggressive sound, but it wasn\u2019t that intense. The engine wakes up with a slightly louder-than-usual startup noise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The parking brake is electric, as this is a latest-generation MINI.<\/strong> When shifting the selector lever into D mode and starting to drive, I was surprised by how comfortable the ride was. Of course, the good road conditions helped, but it was comparable to my sister\u2019s beloved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/mini-testdrive-202107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MINI Cooper D<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/46E48D79-71AD-4AE9-AE21-8DE69F16867C-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW wheels and brakes\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29813\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2DF1E35A-C982-4243-BB64-4408C66273B5-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW engine\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Given the JCW grade, I expected a much stiffer suspension, but it\u2019s not that extreme. Of course, it is firm, but there\u2019s no harsh jolting, and unlike a GT3, the body doesn\u2019t shake much at low speeds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compared to my Porsche 991.1 GTS, the ride quality seems better.<\/strong> This means it could easily be used as a city date car without complaints.<\/p>\n<p>The engine feel at low RPMs is also very manageable. From what I heard, it\u2019s a four-cylinder turbo with 231 ps and 320 Nm of torque. It\u2019s probably possible to increase power further, but this slightly restrained tuning seems focused on everyday usability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turbo lag is minimal, and acceleration from deceleration is smooth without jerking.<\/strong> The transmission is BMW\u2019s well-known torque converter sports automatic, which does an excellent job. Torque delivery is smooth with no slipping, and gear changes are seamless.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/E0428CED-C40A-4E98-B3A7-E9AEE6AB91A6-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW AT selector lever\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impressions_of_Sports_Mode\"><\/span>Impressions of Sports Mode<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Now, this is where the John Cooper Works really shines. <strong>When you engage Sports mode while stopped, the engine\u2019s character changes dramatically.<\/strong> The change is quite noticeable\u2014not only does the sound get louder, but you can feel engine vibrations through the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>In Normal mode, you don\u2019t feel any engine vibrations, but in Sports mode, the steering clearly transmits vibrations.<\/p>\n<p>These vibrations are different from those of a diesel engine or an old four-cylinder engine without a balancer\u2014they\u2019re not unpleasant at all. I believe this is an intentional sporty effect, which alone lifts your spirits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29815\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/95B073F2-90B7-42B6-988F-D37196E428E7-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW switches\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/D87A45A6-909F-4589-86CF-BDC33D3792CB-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW gauges\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pressing the accelerator deeply, the MINI JCW accelerates briskly. Being front-wheel drive, it seems electronically limited a bit to ensure torque is reliably transmitted to the road. The acceleration and power feel correspond to the 231 ps rating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not violently fast, but it\u2019s quick enough that you\u2019ll rarely feel stressed during everyday sporty driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The engine sound becomes a pleasant roar as the revs climb. In an era when many cars are overly quiet due to noise regulations, this car offers a satisfying volume and tone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s especially enjoyable is the sound during upshifts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the paddle shifters, every upshift is accompanied by a loud \u201cBANG!\u201d shift sound. This sound, also heard in Porsche\u2019s PDK, creates a very racing atmosphere that brings a smile to your face.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the way, the shift speed is sufficiently quick.<\/strong> Upshifts are particularly fast, comparable to dual-clutch transmissions like the PDK. However, downshift response feels a bit laggy.<\/p>\n<p>This might be because I\u2019m used to the PDK, but if the engine rev-matching and downshift operation were a bit quicker, it would better balance the upshift responsiveness.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_About_Handling_and_Brakes\"><\/span>How About Handling and Brakes?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>As for handling, in a word: <strong>it turns sharply.<\/strong> Compared to a normal Cooper D, it feels like it aggressively dives into corners. However, perhaps due to torque steer or electronic controls, it\u2019s sometimes hard to get the steering angle exactly right on the first try.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While the Cooper D is nearly neutral steer, the JCW feels slightly tuned toward oversteer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29806\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/A969A15F-2B56-4FAC-9F7B-95501AD508DC-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s quick and agile, but there\u2019s a slight disconnect with the driver\u2019s feel, requiring subtle correction at times. <strong>In a way, it\u2019s reminiscent of Italian cars, especially Ferrari\u2019s handling style.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The car tends to add a bit of its own agility to the driver\u2019s input, so it\u2019s not easy to drive through corners with one hand on the wheel, humming along.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You need to keep both hands firmly on the wheel and take control of this mischievous car\u2019s reins to drive it properly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least, that\u2019s the character of this car\u2019s setup.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/5E5E630B-55CE-44F1-94FE-C5A3985C6C0F-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW emblem\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29809\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/AFD49D25-59B7-425E-B335-12836C8FA41E-853x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This also applies when driving fast in a straight line. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%E8%8A%A6%E6%9C%89%E3%83%89%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%96%E3%82%A6%E3%82%A7%E3%82%A4%E3%81%AE%E8%B5%B0%E3%82%8A%E6%96%B9%E3%81%A8%E6%B3%A8%E6%84%8F%E7%82%B9\/#%E2%91%AB%E8%8A%A6%E6%9C%89%E9%9A%A7%E9%81%93%EF%BC%88%E3%82%8D%E3%82%86%E3%81%86%E3%81%99%E3%81%84%E3%81%A9%E3%81%86%EF%BC%89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royu Tunnel<\/a> is ideal for testing due to its uneven road surface, and here the car feels like it\u2019s correcting the course slightly rather than running solidly.<\/p>\n<p>The body roll in corners is moderate. The suspension isn\u2019t rock hard, so it doesn\u2019t corner flat like you might imagine from the term \u201cgo-kart feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The MINI\u2019s \u201cgo-kart feeling\u201d really just expresses its excellent agility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As for the brakes, I personally rate them very highly. The stopping power is more than sufficient, and the pedal feel and natural control through pedal pressure make braking genuinely enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s one of the few brakes that make you want to use them to control your speed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I felt this quality is similar to Porsche brakes.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall_Impression\"><\/span>Overall Impression<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>After driving this JCW grade, I think it\u2019s a model that enhances agility while ensuring everyday comfort. <strong>It felt similar to Porsche\u2019s \u201cGTS\u201d models.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At first, I expected a more hardcore tuning-machine feel, but it\u2019s not, so <strong>those who don\u2019t like overly stiff cars can rest easy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/78F59CB8-500E-4AE9-9F0E-22458F4D2570-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"MINI JCW\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you prioritize GT-car traits like straight-line stability and natural handling, the standard grade might be better.<\/p>\n<p>I think this car suits those who <strong>mainly want to enjoy driving on mountain passes and winding roads, while also using it as a daily driver.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re considering circuit driving, I\u2019d recommend the limited \u201cJohn Cooper Works GP\u201d model or other more enhanced versions.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than a pure sports car, I personally feel the MINI JCW is best described as \u201cthe ultimate sporty car.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MINI John Cooper Works The other day, a friend purchased a BMW MINI JCW (John Cooper Works), and I had the chance to take it for a test drive.
