Life really is full of surprises\u2026<\/strong>&#8221; but honestly, I might be the most surprised of all (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>So today, I want to share my thoughts from a wife\u2019s perspective on &#8220;<strong>how to turn a wife with no interest in cars into a manual transmission driver<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That said, this is just my personal experience and not a strict rule that &#8220;<strong>this method is the only way<\/strong>,&#8221; so I hope you\u2019ll read it as &#8220;<strong>here\u2019s one example of how it can happen<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Steps_to_Turn_Your_Wife_into_a_Manual_Transmission_Driver\"><\/span>Steps to Turn Your Wife into a Manual Transmission Driver<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To sum it up, I think the order is:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Get her interested in cars \u2192 Let her discover the joy of driving \u2192 Practice driving a manual transmission<\/p>\n<p>Especially with Porsche, since the car\u2019s performance is amazing to begin with, <strong>if the husband patiently and persistently encourages it, there\u2019s a very good chance the wife will become a manual driver.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But under no circumstances should you think, <strong>&#8220;Let\u2019s start by making her practice driving a manual right away!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because many wives have absolutely no interest in cars to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>If you start from &#8220;<strong>Cars are amazing! Since this car is so great, my wife will obviously appreciate it too!<\/strong>&#8221; it comes off as pushy and backfires.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, I honestly thought,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">&#8220;With housework, childcare, and work keeping me busy, I really don\u2019t care about cars. Where in my life is there room for a car?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So I think it\u2019s very important for husbands to understand the basic premise that &#8220;<strong>wives often have no interest in cars.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Five_Key_Points_to_Turn_Your_Wife_into_a_Manual_Driver\"><\/span>Five Key Points to Turn Your Wife into a Manual Driver<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>With that in mind, here are five key points:<\/p>\n<p>\u2460 Don\u2019t rush<br \/>\n\u2461 To spark interest, start by letting her ride in a car with a comfortable passenger seat<br \/>\n\u2462 Once she\u2019s interested, have her actually drive a fun-to-drive car<br \/>\n\u2463 To get her to remove the AT-only license restriction, the husband\u2019s strong enthusiasm is essential<br \/>\n\u2464 Accompany her during manual transmission driving practice<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s about it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Above all, <strong>not rushing<\/strong> is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>I understand the feeling of &#8220;<strong>I want her to love cars quickly<\/strong>,&#8221; but impatience shows and often backfires. It\u2019s the same in sales: the more you rush to close, the more the other person pulls away.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to take a calm, long-term view and not give up just because she says no once. Trying various approaches is also a key point (this really sounds like work, huh? lol).<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Let_Her_Ride_in_a_Car_with_a_Comfortable_Passenger_Seat\"><\/span>Let Her Ride in a Car with a Comfortable Passenger Seat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>To get her interested in cars, first <strong>let her ride in a car with a comfortable passenger seat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Never start by putting her in a GT3 or a convertible.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/GT3\uff11-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 GT3 Touring (992 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The GT3 is indeed an amazing car, and when I first drove it, I was impressed, thinking &#8220;<strong>This car is on a whole different level!<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But on the other hand, cars like that are fun only for the driver. <strong>The passenger seat is stiff, and at low speeds, it picks up every bump on the road, so honestly, sitting in the passenger seat for a long time is tough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you glance over, seeing only your husband enjoying himself while driving is the worst kind of drive for a wife.<\/p>\n<p>Also, convertibles feel great, but <strong>some models have quite a lot of wind turbulence<\/strong> (I think the 981 has quite a bit), which can be inconvenient for women with long hair, cause sunburn, and be embarrassing, so it\u2019s better to avoid convertibles at first.<\/p>\n<p>The best cars to start with are <strong>the Panamera or Cayenne with superb ride comfort, or a 911 equipped with PASM or a suspension that\u2019s not too stiff<\/strong> (for test drives, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Then, once she gradually feels &#8220;<strong>Porsche is surprisingly comfortable<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>it\u2019s a great car<\/strong>,&#8221; it\u2019s time to move on to the next stage\u2014letting her experience the joy of driving.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_Her_Actually_Drive_a_Fun-to-Drive_Car\"><\/span>Have Her Actually Drive a Fun-to-Drive Car<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I believe Porsche is a car that\u2019s &#8220;<strong>all about driving.<\/strong>&#8221; The excitement level is completely different between the passenger and driver seats.<\/p>\n<p>Even someone who\u2019s a complete novice about cars will be amazed at how easy it is to drive and how different it feels from other cars once they get behind the wheel. In fact, my sister-in-law, who had zero interest in cars, was extremely impressed when she first drove my husband\u2019s 911. This Boxster is definitely fun! I\u2019ll pay for the license upgrade!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m pretty sure I said no more than 10 times (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>No way, we have small kids, work, and where would I find time to go to driving school? Besides, even if I get the upgrade, I\u2019m never going to drive a manual car.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But my husband was so persistent, and he said things like &#8220;<strong>If you can drive a manual, you can drive any car in the world. That\u2019s amazing.<\/strong>&#8221; Eventually, I gave in and decided to go for the license upgrade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28714\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/DSC_0572-800x533-1.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Boxster\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accompany_Her_During_Manual_Transmission_Driving_Practice\"><\/span>Accompany Her During Manual Transmission Driving Practice<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Once you remove the AT-only restriction, it\u2019s easy to feel like the goal is achieved (I was like that lol), but that\u2019s just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t be able to drive well without lots of practice, so <strong>my husband and I went out to practice driving the Boxster about once every few months while our parents watched the kids.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">&#8220;You can\u2019t keep the clutch pressed the whole time just because the gear has changed!&#8221; &#8220;If you drive like that, it\u2019ll wear out quickly!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He nagged me from the passenger seat, but looking back now, I think, &#8220;<strong>It\u2019s amazing he was willing to let me practice driving such an important car when I was so bad at it.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I was only able to drive a manual confidently after buying my own manual car and driving it every day (it took about a week), but if I hadn\u2019t practiced on the Boxster first, I wouldn\u2019t have gotten there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29785\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_3637.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Boxster\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_the_End_Its_the_Husbands_Enthusiasm%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>In the End, It\u2019s the Husband\u2019s Enthusiasm&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Writing this all out, turning a paper driver wife into a manual driver is really a huge hassle. If I were in his shoes, I definitely wouldn\u2019t have that kind of motivation\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>Actually, a few years ago when I participated in a Porsche Driving School with the Boxster, my husband tweeted this on social media:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Today I came to watch my wife participate in a driving school. When we first met, she had zero interest in cars, and now she\u2019s mastered driving a manual car. I\u2019m often asked what the secret is to changing her like this. The answer is simple: presentation skills at home.
