iPhone iOS 12 Update<\/h3>\n

Apple released iOS 12 for iPhones and tablets on September 13 local time. With this update, Google Maps<\/a> became available on Apple CarPlay. Apple CarPlay lets you use apps like music, messaging, calls, and navigation from your smartphone directly on your car\u2019s display.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The navigation system in our current Panamera is usable to some extent, but sometimes after getting stuck in traffic, it shows a bright red congestion display (slow, haha), or it guides us on routes that make us wonder why it\u2019s taking such a detour.<\/p>\n

Every time that happens, I open Google Maps on my iPhone, search for a route, and prop the iPhone behind the steering wheel to follow Google Maps navigation. However, the phone keeps falling over every time we stop, and it\u2019s hard to keep my eyes aligned with it, which is quite troublesome (-_-).<\/strong> So, having Google Maps available on Apple CarPlay with this update is really great news.<\/p>\n

By the way, the good points of Google Maps are:<\/p>\n

\u30fbIt displays traffic information in real time
\n\u30fbIt suggests not only main roads but also shortcuts and back roads
\n\u30fbThe latest traffic info is reflected immediately (for example, the opening of the Shin-Meishin Expressway between Takatsuki and Kobe)<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s about it.<\/p>\n

Tried Using Google Maps Right Away<\/h3>\n

My husband said, \u201cOur new Panamera supports Apple CarPlay, so I\u2019ll try using Google Maps,\u201d and he gave it a go. Today, I\u2019d like to briefly share how it went. First, the preparations:<\/p>\n

\u30fbUpdate your iPhone to iOS 12
\n\u30fbHave a charging cable ready to connect your iPhone to the car
\n\u30fbInstall the Google Maps app on your iPhone<\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t complicated steps, and many are probably already set up. By the way, Porsche officially announced in 2015 that it does not support Google\u2019s \u201cAndroid Auto\u201d but only Apple\u2019s \u201cCarPlay,\u201d so only iPhone users can use Google Maps navigation in Porsche cars,<\/strong> my husband said.<\/p>\n

So, when we connected the Panamera and iPhone, Google Maps appeared right away! (Of course)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Google Maps displays on the screen like this, almost identical to the iPhone interface.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

However, scrolling is a bit clunky, so it\u2019s better to use the up\/down buttons shown in the image above or operate it on the iPhone. Google Maps allows voice input for destination setting, but if you want to type, you can do so on your iPhone, and it will reflect on the car screen.<\/strong> I tried voice recognition by saying \u201cTokyo Tower,\u201d and this guidance appeared.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It\u2019s closer than I thought (laughs). Also, the route display on the iPhone and the car\u2019s navigation screen look roughly the same, as shown below.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You can set options like \u201cavoid highways\u201d or \u201cavoid toll roads,\u201d just like a regular navigation system.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Also, when selecting a pre-registered destination, it shows a route adjusted to the latest conditions like this.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

NAVITIME Too!<\/h3>\n

By the way, NAVITIME\u2019s CarNaviTime<\/a> also supports Apple CarPlay, so I tried it out.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For destination search, it offers options like \u201cGo home,\u201d \u201cHistory,\u201d and \u201cConvenience store,\u201d just like a regular navigation system.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This time I searched with free words, but currently it only accepts English (Roman letters) input.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So, for this, you operate the iPhone to type the destination, and it reflects on the screen. The route to \u201cTokyo Tower\u201d looks like this.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Anyway, Update to iOS 12!<\/h3>\n

It seems other navigation apps supporting Apple CarPlay will appear in some form in the future, so it\u2019s good to switch between them depending on the situation. For example, when using Google Maps in rural or mountain roads, it may guide you onto unbelievably narrow roads or paths that end in stairs\u2026 haha.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, it\u2019s very convenient to use Google Maps in the city and other navigation apps for mountain roads.<\/p>\n

According to my husband,<\/p>\n

This update is revolutionary. The world hasn\u2019t fully realized its significance yet, but I think it will be a game changer for the navigation industry. Truly, amazing things are coming.<\/p>\n
