This time, I\u2019m reporting on my impressions when taking the Macan onto winding roads.<\/p>\n<p>When you think of the Macan, it\u2019s a very sporty SUV, and <strong>calling it merely sporty doesn\u2019t do it justice\u2014it\u2019s a car with the athleticism that makes you want to call it a \u2018sports car\u2019<\/strong>. The strong impression left by the first generation Macan is still vivid in my memory, and the second generation was also a sufficiently sporty car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29723\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/49FC104F-019B-477B-BACD-EE369DAD8D0B-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the Macan (3rd Generation)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With those expectations in mind, I took the Macan up into the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Since it doesn\u2019t have the Sport Chrono Package, I couldn\u2019t try Sport Plus mode, but I switched to the regular \u2018Sport\u2019 mode. <strong>Even if it had the Sport Exhaust, the sound might change a bit, but there was no noticeable change in sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, I drove it in automatic mode. The PDK keeps the revs up, allowing you to feel the engine\u2019s power and torque directly. Indeed, this 265 hp engine delivers a respectable sense of power.<\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t experience neck-snapping acceleration, but <strong>for everyday driving in Japan, it definitely has enough power.<\/strong> It\u2019s a well-made engine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/87E664D0-ED3D-4B5D-84A1-7B79313C6B40-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Macan (3rd Generation)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The revving feel isn\u2019t bad either. It\u2019s smooth, with no strange vibrations or hesitation. However, if you ask whether it\u2019s a sensuous Porsche engine, the answer is no.<\/p>\n<p>The main reason is the sound. <strong>It\u2019s not the volume but the quality of the sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It falls a bit short of being a finely tuned, pleasant sound and is more like the sound of a typical high-performance European engine. If you\u2019re looking for that kind of \u2018pleasure,\u2019 <strong>it might be better to get the Sport Exhaust option.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, Porsche can\u2019t escape noise regulations, so how much the Sport Exhaust helps is uncertain, but I think it\u2019s better than nothing.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PDK_Evolution_and_Manual_Mode\"><\/span>PDK Evolution and Manual Mode<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Using the switch on the steering wheel, I switched to manual mode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The PDK\u2019s shift response is very fast. Extremely fast.<\/strong> It feels even smoother than the second generation, combining the smoothness of a top-notch torque converter automatic with lightning-fast shifts.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the shift sounds and rev-matching on downshifts are very mild, which might feel a bit underwhelming to seasoned Porsche drivers, but <strong>overall, it\u2019s tuned to appeal to a broad audience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/15E3E6EB-F3EF-4E1C-BC6D-583FAEFF0EC9-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"PDK of the Macan (3rd Generation)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>However, the gear ratios between 2nd and 3rd gears are somewhat far apart,<\/strong> which is a feeling I also experienced in the 970 Panamera GTS. On typical Japanese winding roads, 2nd gear feels too low and 3rd gear too high.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When braking from 3rd and downshifting to 2nd, the revs rise a bit too much, making it tricky to drive smoothly.<\/strong> This takes some getting used to.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Macans_True_Strength_Lies_in_Its_Handling\"><\/span>The Macan\u2019s True Strength Lies in Its Handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If I were to sum up the driving appeal of this Macan in one word, it would be \u2018<strong>nimbleness<\/strong>.\u2019 Even with the previous second-generation S model, I described it as a \u2018<strong>Tall Cayman<\/strong>,\u2019 but with this four-cylinder, the Cayman feel is even stronger.<\/p>\n<p>You hardly feel any front-end heaviness. <strong>Turn the steering wheel, and the car smoothly points its nose toward the curve.<\/strong> Entering the curve, the suspension offers a taut, firm rebound with just a slight body roll as the car glides through.<\/p>\n<p>The all-wheel-drive control is exquisite, and when you open the throttle hard at the curve\u2019s exit, torque is applied to the front wheels, allowing you to power out smoothly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29729\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/C3243327-7B15-4F0A-9BD1-91D712ADEC47-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the Macan (3rd Generation)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Macan is originally based on the VW Group\u2019s front-wheel-drive platform, but the AWD torque distribution is rear-biased. Under normal conditions, more torque goes to the rear, with the front acting as support. This results in a rear-wheel-drive-like feel while employing AWD control similar to that of the 911.<\/p>\n<p>Even after tackling several consecutive curves, <strong>it moves with the agility you wouldn\u2019t expect from an SUV.<\/strong> All four wheels grip the road evenly and tenaciously. There\u2019s no sense of fear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>True to the latest Porsche, anyone can drive fast with incredible confidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is likely because the suspension is designed with higher loads and harsher conditions in mind. For an average driver pushing it a bit on winding roads, it\u2019s a piece of cake.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summary\"><\/span>Summary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If I were to explain this Macan to someone else, I\u2019d call it the \u2018<strong>most practical Porsche<\/strong>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, this \u2018practicality\u2019 isn\u2019t about spacious seats, luggage room, or comfort features. <strong>It\u2019s about the driving tuning being \u2018practical.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Porsche is fundamentally a sports car maker that values highway and winding road feel over stop-and-go comfort on city streets. The first-generation Macan strongly reflected that, but <strong>this 3rd generation Macan seems to place much more emphasis on ease of everyday driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/17941294-A2B5-47F2-A13F-865A218AF262-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Macan (3rd Generation)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although it carries the Porsche emblem, <strong>the PDK control logic, engine torque delivery, and sound are all tuned to minimize stress in daily driving and make it accessible to everyone.<\/strong> That\u2019s my impression.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, it\u2019s also true that the classic \u2018<strong>Porsche character<\/strong>\u2019 has become less pronounced. You can still feel Porsche DNA in the handling and PDK response, but some elements have been lost.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to feel that \u2018Porsche character,\u2019 <strong>it\u2019s best to choose your options carefully and tailor the Macan to your personal taste.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Options_I_Would_Choose\"><\/span>Options I Would Choose<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/iris-12-1280x720.jpg\" alt=\"Macan (3rd Generation)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the way, if I were to buy this base 3rd generation Macan, here\u2019s a list of driving-related options I\u2019d pick. I\u2019ve omitted appearance options since those depend on personal preference. I\u2019d prioritize them from top to bottom depending on budget:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Air suspension (at least PASM with coil springs is recommended)<\/li>\n<li>20-inch wheels (if you get air suspension)<\/li>\n<li>PTV Plus (would be interesting and fun if available on the four-cylinder)<\/li>\n<li>Heated GT Sport steering wheel<\/li>\n<li>Sport Chrono Package<\/li>\n<li>Sport Exhaust<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just for your reference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Testing the New Macan (3rd Generation) on Winding Roads Continuing from the previous article, this is a review of the new Macan (3rd generation).
