1) The Journey to Purchase<\/h3>\n

Since moving to Tokyo in 2007, I had lived without a car for 11 years. Here, I\u2019ll share from three perspectives: \u201cWhy I decided to buy a car after 11 years,\u201d \u201cWhy I chose Porsche,\u201d and \u201cWhy I chose the 4E-Hybrid among Porsches.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why I decided to buy a car after 11 years<\/h4>\n

I\u2019ve loved cars since long ago, and before moving to central Tokyo, I had driven various vehicles. One day, I suddenly wondered if it was really okay to continue living life without any connection to cars.
\nLater, while window-shopping at various car dealerships, I made up my mind: \u201cI don\u2019t need a car for daily life or as a taxi substitute, but I want to buy a car again that brings \u2018joy to my heart\u2019.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why I chose Porsche<\/h4>\n

Simply put, \u201cBecause Porsche made my heart skip a beat.\u201d<\/strong> There\u2019s no guarantee I\u2019ll be healthy and have sharp reflexes to drive for decades to come. Even generously, I\u2019ll only be able to own a few cars in my lifetime. So I wanted to drive a car that truly excites my heart.<\/strong> That car was Porsche. I also considered Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Maserati, and others, all fine cars, but none made my heart race like Porsche did.<\/p>\n

Back around 1980, I traveled with two friends to West Germany with the goal of driving over 200 km\/h on the Autobahn. We were in a Mercedes-Benz 280S, but while cruising at 220 km\/h, a Porsche 911 smoothly overtook us.
\nFrom that moment, Porsche\u2019s presence and the dream of \u201csomeday owning a Porsche\u201d were etched into my soul.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why I chose the Panamera 4E-Hybrid<\/h4>\n

Because I felt \u201cthe Panamera 4E-Hybrid is the sports car of the future.\u201d<\/strong>
\nI had always thought my car life would end with a 911, so this time I was looking at other Porsches. Initially, I was interested in the Cayenne, but its height and weight far exceeded the limits of my apartment\u2019s parking garage.<\/strong> Also, I thought, \u201cDo I really need an SUV when it\u2019s Porsche?\u201d So I turned my attention to the Panamera and instantly felt, \u201cThis is it!\u201d<\/p>\n

My first test drive was the Panamera 4S. The sound when lightly pressing the accelerator\u2014voh, voh\u2014and the powerful forward surge made me exclaim, \u201cWow!\u201d<\/strong>
\nAfter that, I narrowed my choices to the Panamera 4, Panamera 4E-Hybrid, and Panamera 4S.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Among them, I was captivated by the 4E-Hybrid\u2019s torque and horsepower that surpass the 4S,<\/strong> but unfortunately, there was no test car available then. Later, a dealer who had test-driven the new Panamera 4E-Hybrid told me, \u201cThe Panamera 4E-Hybrid is the symbol of the sports car of the future!\u201d<\/strong> That sealed the deal, and I decided to buy it.<\/p>\n

Around home, it runs quietly on electric power alone; on highways and winding roads, it delivers full boost. No other sports car offers this. Fuel economy wasn\u2019t a big concern for me.<\/p>\n

2) Options and Specifications<\/h3>\n

Before deciding on options<\/h4>\n

Before finalizing options, I requested two quotes: one with Carrara White and 20-inch Panamera Turbo wheels, and another with Jet Black and 21-inch Panamera Sport Design wheels (high-gloss black). Ultimately, I chose Carrara White as the base and proceeded with option selections.<\/p>\n

How I decided on the wheels<\/h4>\n

I had two thoughts about options:<\/p>\n

First, as an owner after 11 years without a car, and recalling a car magazine\u2019s statement that \u201cPorsche is almost perfect as standard,\u201d<\/strong> I didn\u2019t think much about covering shortcomings with options.<\/p>\n

Second, I didn\u2019t want to add weight to the Panamera by adding options.<\/strong> My apartment\u2019s parking garage has a weight limit of 2,300 kg. The Panamera 4E-Hybrid\u2019s curb weight is 2,170 kg, and with a full tank, about 2,240 kg. Adding option weight would push it closer to the limit, so I tried to avoid options.<\/p>\n

Still, I wanted the wheels to look sleek and smart, so I initially planned for 20-inch wheels. But the dealer advised: <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re carrying a toddler in the back seat, 20-inch wheels will worsen ride comfort, so we recommend the standard wheels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also, the parking garage\u2019s width limit was already tight, so I reluctantly chose 19-inch wheels. However, I opted for the 19-inch wheels from the 4S model rather than the standard ones. (They\u2019re somewhat similar to the Turbo W wheels, haha.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Even now, whenever I pass by Panameras with 20- or 21-inch wheels, I wonder, \u201cWas this the right choice?\u201d After signing, I read this blog\u2019s \u201cWhy my husband deliberately chose 21-inch wheels for the Panamera Turbo\u201d<\/a> and thought, \u201cIf only I\u2019d read this earlier, I definitely would have gone for 20-inch wheels!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Looks like I\u2019ll have to leave 20-inch wheels for a future 911 (laughs).<\/p>\n

Lessons learned from choosing options<\/h4>\n

I\u2019ll share which options I\u2019m glad I chose or wish I had chosen in a future post after delivery. But the main lesson from this purchase was \u201cWhen buying your car, make sure you\u2019re fully satisfied at the time of contract!\u201d<\/strong> (laughs) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) Delivery Timeline<\/h3>\n

In my case, it took about five months from order to delivery. <\/p>\n

\u2460 August 2017: Contract and order at Porsche Center

\n\u2193
\n\u2462 November: Production completed, departed from Emden port, Germany
\n\u2193
\n\u2463 January 2018: Arrived at Toyohashi port, Japan
\n\u2193
\n\u2464 Late January: Delivery at Porsche Center<\/p>\n

For my 4E, the production slot was probably already reserved, so delivery took five months.<\/p>\n

4) At Delivery<\/h3>\n

Having lived without a car for 11 years since moving to Tokyo in 2006, I was completely out of touch with car info. So while some might say \u201cThat\u2019s common, nothing to fuss about,\u201d<\/strong> I had various experiences during the \u201c1\u20132 months after delivery\u201d due to my limited knowledge of hybrids.<\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

\u2460 If the electric battery reaches zero, the engine won\u2019t start<\/h4>\n

On delivery day, the dealer told me: <\/p>\n

\u201cIf the electric battery charge reaches zero, the engine won\u2019t start. If you don\u2019t plan to drive for about a week, please keep the battery charged to around 50% (about 25 km range). If the engine won\u2019t start, we\u2019ll arrange emergency towing. The first three years are free, but after that, there will be a charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said \u201cOkay,\u201d but inside I was honestly panicked: \u201cWait, really?\u201d<\/strong> At contract time, I was asked if I\u2019d drive about once a week, but I didn\u2019t realize this was a warning about the battery charge.<\/p>\n

My apartment has an underground mechanical parking garage, so installing a Panasonic charging port was impossible. I thought, \u201cFrom now on, I\u2019ll have to check the battery charge before coming home? That\u2019s a hassle.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Later, Porsche headquarters took measures, and my 4E-Hybrid received a software update at an authorized factory, allowing the engine to start even with zero battery charge.<\/p>\n

Just recently, after running on E-Power until the battery was empty, I nervously turned the starter\u2014and the engine started perfectly. Right then, the gasoline engine roared to life right after starting on electric power!<\/strong> Thanks, Porsche headquarters (laughs).<\/p>\n

The specs say a full charge allows 50 km in E-Power mode, but two weeks after delivery, after borrowing the Porsche Center\u2019s charger and fully charging for over 4 hours, the display showed \u201c44 km.\u201d
\nWhy not 50 km?<\/strong> (At delivery, it showed 49 km.)<\/span><\/p>\n

I wondered if 10% of the battery was already damaged and contacted the dealer for a factory inspection. The factory replied it was normal.<\/p>\n

They explained the computer calculates the range based on past driving habits, so it showed 44 km.<\/strong> Eco-driving brings the number closer to 50 km, but aggressive driving or using air conditioning lowers it.
\nIn fact, after a full charge overnight on a trip, the display showed 50 km the next morning. Then, after driving a few kilometers downhill without traffic lights, it showed 52 km, confirming the factory\u2019s explanation. At that time, this info wasn\u2019t widely shared with sales staff, so many were unaware.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Vehicle width<\/h4>\n

My apartment\u2019s mechanical parking garage has a width limit of 1950 mm for the largest spots. The 4E catalog listed the width as 1937 mm,<\/strong> so I thought it would fit. But documents I saw for another Panamera 4E-Hybrid showed the width as 1950 mm.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Worried about scratching fenders, tires, or alloy wheels, I asked the dealer which was correct and what the width would be with 20-inch 315 mm tires, but they couldn\u2019t give a clear answer.<\/p>\n

My Beloved 971 Panamera 4E-Hybrid<\/h3>\n

Despite these issues, I deeply respect Porsche for developing such an amazing sports car and truly love my current 971 Panamera 4E-Hybrid.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If anyone is considering buying a used 2017 Panamera 4E-Hybrid, I hope to share this honest advice: \u201cIt\u2019s a great car, but check if the engine will start when the battery is empty.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
