If You\u2019re Buying, Buy Now.<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Porsche_911_Type_996\"><\/span>Porsche 911 Type 996<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On this blog, I have experienced and reported on quite a number of 911s, from the original 911 to the \u201973 Carrera and all the way to the 992 GT3, but for some reason, there are hardly any articles about the 996 and 997.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the 996, I have done only one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/996-testdrive-202009\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review of a later model Carrera 4S<\/a>, but that car had modified suspension and wheels, so it wasn\u2019t a report on an original-condition vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I had the opportunity to test drive a <strong>well-maintained, original-condition early 996 Carrera 4<\/strong>, and I want to share that experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29501\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/9A56B9F8-3D50-4BAF-ABDD-AC06790BAB76-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche in Zenith Blue\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/CB561D13-B9AA-46A9-AC07-62DD7ED49705-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a very rare 2000 model painted in Zenith Blue. <strong>Although it has about 80,000 km on the clock, the exterior is stunningly beautiful.<\/strong> The body still has plenty of gloss, and while the interior shows some signs of aging, it\u2019s clear the car has been carefully cared for.<\/p>\n<p>When it was first released, I honestly found the teardrop-shaped headlights awkward, but now they look incredibly cool. They remind me of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E3%83%9D%E3%83%AB%E3%82%B7%E3%82%A7%E3%83%BB911_GT1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">911 GT1<\/a>, a design I personally love. Also, <strong>the overall width of 1,770 mm is just right.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Viewed from above, the front and rear ends taper in, creating an egg-shaped silhouette. The rear fender bulges are very modest, giving it a <strong>compactness that could be called a water-cooled \u2018narrow\u2019<\/strong> 911, which is irresistible.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2FD45503-E89C-41DC-807C-CA7225F6FE0A-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Teardrop headlights of Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29502\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29502\" class=\"size-large wp-image-29502\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/66D3C99D-C445-4BF9-8C75-C840F9805C92-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"996 Teardrop Headlights\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reminiscent of the 911 GT1<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/921AE0B2-CFD3-4BD0-989F-BA8E3C2474ED-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The doors are large and heavy, but when closed, they no longer make the vault-like sound of the 993 and earlier models. Like modern 911s, the doors close with a low, solid thud. <strong>The seats are very soft and plush when you sit down.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even during the air-cooled era, Porsche seats had relatively soft cushions, but these feel even larger and thicker, like sitting in a luxury coupe.<\/p>\n<p>Starting the engine, the 3.4-liter, 300 PS powerplant wakes up with a modest but satisfying \u201c<strong>vrooom!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Putting the Tiptronic transmission into D and starting off slowly.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_is_911_Handling\"><\/span>This is 911 Handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The initial ride is very mild. The suspension is very soft, and <strong>at very low speeds, it feels almost like a saloon car.<\/strong> As you gradually increase the pace, the previously soft suspension begins to firm up, and you can clearly feel the tires gripping the road.<\/p>\n<p>When going over large bumps, there is a noticeable \u201cthud!\u201d sound, and you think, \u201c<strong>Ah, this is definitely a 911.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The engine is very quiet at low revs, but that\u2019s only inside the cabin. Later, when I listened to the startup sound from outside, it had a pleasantly loud and sporty note. Because the suspension felt soft, I cautiously approached the first corner.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/800E119F-0B5F-4115-ACA5-BDA065BC61FB-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AD189369-6313-4BCE-B257-26A566354C13-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But I quickly realized there was no need to worry. <strong>This is truly the genuine 911 suspension.<\/strong> The soft feeling disappears the moment you turn the steering wheel and put weight on the outside tires; the body roll stops sharply, and the car goes into attack mode.<\/p>\n<p>As you apply more traction, <strong>you can feel the tires flexing under the steering wheel in a smooth, linear way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like using a high-end racing simulator wheel, where you can feel the road surface and car load precisely through the steering. This is what a 911 is all about.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, <strong>this car is a four-wheel-drive Carrera 4.<\/strong> As long as the front tires are pointed in the direction of travel, you can floor the accelerator and exit the corner as if nothing happened. The behavior is exactly the same as the four-wheel-drive Carreras like the 991 Carrera 4 GTS and 992.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/C939E47A-E4BC-40C4-94EF-6CCB4B1761D0-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Turn the steering, the body rolls moderately to load the tires, the roll stops sharply, you corner with lateral G-forces, and finally, you accelerate out with strong longitudinal traction. This sequence is very rhythmic, and <strong>the more you drive, the more perfectly in sync you become with the car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s as if the car is teaching the driver timing through the suspension and steering. This is not an exaggeration\u2014it really feels that way in this 911.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s incredibly fun.<\/strong> Even though it was my first time driving this 911, the more I drove, the more in tune I felt. When you exit one corner well, the entry to the next corner feels even better. This continuous rhythm is wonderfully satisfying.<\/p>\n<p>You rarely get this feeling with modern, cybernetic-fast 911s. Or rather, you can experience it in modern 911s, but only at high speeds on a circuit. However, <strong>the 996 lets amateurs enjoy winding roads at a comfortable pace and still have a blast.<\/strong> That\u2019s one of its biggest charms.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tiptronic_and_Engine\"><\/span>Tiptronic and Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Tiptronic transmission\u2019s shifting manners are also excellent. <strong>It\u2019s a big leap forward from the Tiptronic in the 993 and earlier models, evolving significantly from the 996 onward.<\/strong> Shift shocks are reduced, and it\u2019s very smooth. Especially the downshifts are very gentle, and the manual mode via the steering wheel switches is much more responsive.<\/p>\n<p>While it can\u2019t match the shift speed of a PDK, it\u2019s fully capable of sporty manual driving, and I can say with confidence that it was never boring. On the contrary, <strong>I had a great time flooring the accelerator and focusing on steering.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/04FFBEA0-BE23-4837-89EB-F89CB8AE8841-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Tiptronic of Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/15547364-82B7-4E2A-8B18-08D8CC86C178-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Dashboard of Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even in automatic mode, a quick press of the accelerator triggers a kickdown and instant acceleration. The engine is very smooth, and <strong>the high-rev engine sound is wonderfully pleasing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the engineered engine sounds of the 981 and 991 are nice, the pure engine note of the 996 is superb. It\u2019s a well-rounded \u201cpleasing sound\u201d that you never get tired of hearing, no matter how long you listen.<\/p>\n<p>The engine\u2019s power is rated at 300 PS, but it felt like it had a bit more. It\u2019s not insanely fast, but it has acceleration and response worthy of a 911. <strong>Subjectively, it felt slower than a 981 GTS but a bit quicker than a standard 981.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/C962FB47-6439-439E-B422-3BE58EE16929-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Underrated_Classic_996_If_Youre_Buying_Buy_Now\"><\/span>The Underrated Classic 996. If You\u2019re Buying, Buy Now.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now, this 911 was actually a used car on sale, priced under 3 million yen. (It was already sold by the time of writing.)<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for the 996\u2019s low price include its teardrop headlights, the intermediate shaft failure issue (commonly called the \u201cintermi problem\u201d), and the No. 6 cylinder issue. The teardrop headlights are a matter of taste, but <strong>I found them awkward at launch but now think they look very cool.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like the design has finally caught up with the times; in fact, it even feels fresh now, so I encourage you to see one in person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regarding the intermi problem, it seems the early 996 has a low failure rate.<\/strong> In fact, Porsche Japan\u2019s service campaign (not a recall) only applies to later models. Also, many shops offer bearing replacements to address the root cause, so it\u2019s not something to worry about too much.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2419394F-0967-4C09-A0CC-FE9E8AD3A0C6-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Engine bay of Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for the No. 6 cylinder issue, although the occurrence rate is low, some 996 and 997 models develop scratches on the No. 6 cylinder, eventually causing abnormal noises and piston rocking, requiring an overhaul.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to a Porsche shop I know, the failure rate for the 3.4L 996 is even lower.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve heard about this issue here and there. From my personal view, I\u2019d advise caution with low-mileage cars. Low-mileage cars tend to fetch higher prices on the used market.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>for cars this old, extremely low mileage can actually be a red flag.<\/strong> Low mileage means either the car was rarely driven or mostly used for short trips.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29491\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/48FF952E-9DF1-4092-9CFB-97C9FA9AF6F3-1280x855.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Type 996\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rarely driven cars suffer from engine oil draining away inside the engine during long storage, causing dry starts every time. This <strong>increases friction in the cylinders and moving parts, which is never good for the engine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Short-trip-heavy usage, especially common in Japan with lots of stop-and-go traffic, means the engine rarely revs above 2,000 rpm. This prevents the cooling system from circulating enough coolant to properly cool the problematic No. 6 cylinder.<\/p>\n<p>Also, stopping before the engine reaches optimal temperature means oil and other fluids don\u2019t heat up enough, causing moisture to accumulate and accelerating oil degradation.<\/p>\n<p>According to Uwe Makrutzki, head of Porsche Classic\u2019s factory restoration division, <strong>you should drive at least 100 km per month.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/boxster_gts\/status\/1545211230050168832?s=20&#038;t=ze6XPaeZuxf7G4mku_6CAg<\/p>\n<p>So, when buying a used 996, <strong>I recommend choosing one with a reasonable mileage and a well-documented maintenance history.<\/strong> Personally, I\u2019d aim for one with at least 50,000 km and original condition with solid service records.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, while classic Porsches have soared in price, the 996 remains affordable. <strong>You can enjoy truly first-class engineering and superb, refined driving at a price lower than many new domestic sports cars.<\/strong> If you\u2019re considering one, I recommend buying a good example sooner rather than later.
