Are there any precautions I should take?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/washing-boxster-rooftop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I\u2019ve written before about caring for the Porsche convertible soft top<\/a>, and today, building on that, I\u2019d like to share what I\u2019ve learned from my husband and our dealer representative.<\/p>\n<p>To get straight to the point, <strong>you can definitely drive a Porsche convertible even on rainy days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/unnamed-1280x720.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Boxster\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When my husband bought his Boxster, he was told by our dealer contact, Mr. H, that <strong>there\u2019s no need to wash the soft top every time you wash the car; just rinsing it with water is enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some other Porsche owners have been told that <strong>automatic car washes are safe for the soft top<\/strong> (although the manual does warn that some types of automatic washes could damage it). Overall, <strong>getting the top wet in the rain is no problem, and there\u2019s no need to worry about it getting ruined.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before our Boxster came home, I had a vague prejudice that <strong>foreign convertibles might leak on rainy days\u2026<\/strong> but after driving through heavy rain several times, I\u2019ve learned that <strong>they don\u2019t leak and there\u2019s no need to worry<\/strong> (sorry for the misunderstanding!).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Always_Open_and_Close_the_Soft_Top_When_Its_Dry\"><\/span>Always Open and Close the Soft Top When It\u2019s Dry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>That said, there is one important point about handling the soft top on rainy days:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Always open and close the soft top when it\u2019s dry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you open the top while it\u2019s still wet or damp, <strong>the moisture and water droplets can cause rubbing damage, which will wear out the soft top.<\/strong> So it\u2019s crucial to only operate the top when it\u2019s dry.<\/p>\n<p>This also applies after washing the car, and my husband always follows this rule.<\/p>\n<p>As for his regular care routine, after driving the Boxster, he <strong>quickly brushes off dirt with a clothes brush<\/strong>, and if <strong>bird droppings land on it, he washes them off immediately<\/strong> (because once they harden, they\u2019re hard to remove and can cause discoloration). About once a year, he also <strong>uses convertible top-specific care products to apply a protective top coat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/IMG_8792-1.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Boxster\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Though unrelated to this article, <a href=\"http:\/\/panamera-life.com\/entry\/headlight-porsche-fog-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I\u2019ve also written about headlight fogging issues before<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Considering_a_Soft_Top_Replacement\"><\/span>Considering a Soft Top Replacement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>That said, my husband\u2019s Boxster is approaching seven years since delivery, and after many tours and repeated opening and closing of the soft top, <strong>the top has started to show some fading and scuff marks<\/strong> (more noticeable on close inspection than from a distance).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/unnamed-1-1280x720.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Boxster\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While you might not notice this just by looking at his Boxster, <strong>the difference becomes clear when it\u2019s parked next to a new Boxster.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since he plans to keep this 981 Boxster GTS for life, <strong>he\u2019s considering replacing the soft top around the 10-year mark.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, in summary, it\u2019s perfectly fine to drive a Porsche convertible on rainy days, but being mindful of when you open and close the soft top and doing some regular care will help keep it looking good for longer.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll continue sharing various articles about maintaining and caring for our beloved cars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Can You Drive a Porsche Convertible on Rainy Days?
