If you took corners too slowly at intersections, you might not make the turn cleanly\u2026<\/p>\n<p>These impressions stuck with me, and no matter how much my husband said, <strong>\u201cWe\u2019ve maintained the 964 regularly, so it\u2019s much better than when we first got it,\u201d<\/strong> I just didn\u2019t feel like driving it.<\/p>\n<p>But recently, I had no choice but to drive the 964, and when I did\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It was incredibly good (laughs).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/C2163A54-0CF6-420B-9C6B-3019445D46D8-1280x1000.jpeg\" alt=\"Air-cooled Porsche 911 (964)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It no longer felt like \u201can old car that still drives well,\u201d but rather, it felt like the car had been rejuvenated.<\/p>\n<p>There was no need to be overly cautious when driving this old car. The driving felt expansive, and I got the sensation of <strong>\u201cthis must be how it felt when it was brand new back then.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was solid, heavy on the road, with the grounded feeling I love, yet the steering was surprisingly light and effortless, without any heaviness. (This seems largely thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/battery-911-964-202104\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">switching to a lithium-ion battery<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>When the light turned green and I pressed the accelerator a little, I enjoyed a smooth, lively acceleration. Also, I liked that it didn\u2019t just feel fast but seemed to still have untapped power under the hood.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_Even_Overshadows_My_Swift_Sport%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>It Even Overshadows My Swift Sport&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The reason I felt the 964 was <strong>so good<\/strong> is partly because it\u2019s a fantastic car, but even more so because my husband <strong>regularly performs preventive maintenance and replaces aging parts carefully.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also heard many stories that driving a 964 that hasn\u2019t been well cared for feels completely different.<\/p>\n<p>Our 964, now five years since delivery, still shows no major issues (nothing requiring an overhaul, for example). That said, small problems like a broken engine belt or slight unusual noises do pop up occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>Each time, my husband cheerfully says,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cI\u2019m off to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/2018\/05\/23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Be-Force<\/a> for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>and takes the 964 to his trusted shop.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that he\u2019s happy about the problems themselves, but rather that <strong>each repair improves the car\u2019s performance, rejuvenates it, and brings the 964 closer to how it was when new\u2014and that process makes him happy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I realize that for people who don\u2019t mind the daily upkeep, an air-cooled Porsche is truly wonderful. (For me, it\u2019s definitely too much work, haha.)<\/p>\n<p>Actually, right after driving the 964 that day, I drove my beloved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/category\/suzuki-swiftsports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swift Sport<\/a>, and the car I had loved so much suddenly felt a bit underwhelming.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_8584.jpg\" alt=\"Suzuki Swift Sport\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I found myself muttering things like, <strong>\u201cHuh? Has it always felt this light? The acceleration is quick, but you really can tell it\u2019s a different class from the Porsche.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair to compare a Porsche and a Swift Sport\u2014they\u2019re just different cars\u2014but the fact that the air-cooled 911 improved so much that it changed even my impression of the Swift Sport\u2019s driving says a lot. (Though after driving the Swift Sport more, I eventually returned to appreciating it again.)<\/p>\n<p>I want to drive the 964 again when I get the chance.
