In other words, <strong>this W124 500E is a car with a wonderful lineage: father Mercedes, mother Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AMG_E60\"><\/span>AMG E60<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The super sedan 500E was further tuned by AMG into the E60 model, which is the focus of this report.<\/p>\n<p>There are various claims about production numbers\u2014some say it was limited to 50 units, others say 60 or even 200\u2014but regardless, it\u2019s undeniably an ultra-rare car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DC79FA27-670B-4FC7-B804-9C51819ACC69.jpeg\" alt=\"AMG E60 (W124) rear seats\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-29013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/5652B0B9-9DF2-4D40-84B4-C4D90F7394D1-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"AMG E60 (W124)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The biggest difference lies in the engine. The original 5.0-liter V8 from the SL500 was enlarged to 6.0 liters. This boosted power from 330 hp to 381 hp, and improved 0\u2013100 km\/h acceleration from 6.1 seconds to 5.3 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Other highlights include AMG suspension, AMG exhaust, and a two-tone seat interior.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Driving_the_AMG_E60\"><\/span>Driving the AMG E60<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Closing the door after getting in, you hear a metallic \u201c<strong*>clunk<\/strong>\u201d sound that you just don\u2019t get in modern cars. It\u2019s reminiscent of the door sound on an air-cooled Porsche, conveying the exceptional rigidity and meticulous craftsmanship. <strong>The engine starts smoothly and quietly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This atmosphere is very similar to the R129 SL500 I used to drive.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting the nostalgic zigzag gate lever into D and gently pressing the somewhat heavy accelerator, the car moves off very smoothly. It has a weighty, reassuring feel that you don\u2019t find in today\u2019s Mercedes, as if you\u2019re driving inside a very solid shell.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The steering is very light at low speeds.<\/strong> It feels like a heavy steering wheel being well assisted. This is quite different from today\u2019s electric power steering, with a subtle resistance and a smooth rotational feel that really stands out.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29017\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29017\" class=\"wp-image-29017 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/B13D35C0-B4D9-4890-A5C5-117688D2E904-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"AMG E60 (W124) gauges\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The speedometer is large and centered, with the tachometer beside it. Mercedes\u2019 philosophy is that the engine plays a supporting role.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Even though it\u2019s an AMG, the engine doesn\u2019t demand attention unnecessarily. This is classic Mercedes.<\/strong> The engine serves purely as a power source, not distracting the driver. The large central speedometer and smaller tachometer beside it reflect this philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>At low speeds, you have to consciously check the tachometer to know the engine speed. The automatic transmission shifts very smoothly without any jolts.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered if the light steering might make cornering uneasy, but this is Mercedes. <strong>There\u2019s absolutely no feeling of softness like you might find in some Japanese luxury sedans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The steering feedback firms up, and stability increases in proportion to lateral G-forces. The car faithfully follows the driver\u2019s commands without deviating from the intended line. Any anxiety I had before entering corners completely vanished.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension, inherited from the SL, does an excellent job. The difference in ride quality between smooth pavement and rough surfaces is minimal. It\u2019s all put together at a high level, <strong>delivering the traditional Mercedes ride comfort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No matter the situation or driving style, Mercedes\u2019 philosophy of safely transporting occupants with consistently high quality is strongly felt here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/E4F3DACF-D638-4CAA-8A35-816C0DF9B2A3.jpeg\" alt=\"AMG E60 (W124) interior\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pressing the accelerator a bit on a straight stretch, the deep V8 rumble resonates pleasantly\u2014not crude, but refined. <strong>When you kick down, the car dips slightly and then surges forward with fierce acceleration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s not as fast as today\u2019s super sedans, but it still offers more than enough power.<\/p>\n<p>High-speed stability and straight-line tracking over uneven surfaces are excellent, making long-distance highway cruising a very enjoyable experience.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_Is_%E2%80%9CThe_Best_or_Nothing%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>This Is \u201cThe Best or Nothing\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After the test drive, I took a long look at the exterior. Though it seems compact by today\u2019s standards, it has a solid presence and looks fantastic. The linear, no-nonsense design and precise press lines, along with the 500E\u2019s signature overfenders, <strong>give it a timeless elegance reminiscent of a classic tailored suit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/4C3D9D6C-52A5-462E-B44C-F12BD2C44131.jpeg\" alt=\"AMG E60 (W124)\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What struck me most riding this car is the over-the-top build quality typical of Mercedes. Nearly 30 years on, the body rigidity, road contact, and powerful engine remain unfaded.<\/p>\n<p>The heavy accelerator and brake pedals designed with safety in mind, the intuitive buttons, and the easy-to-read speedometer\u2014all are crafted as the ultimate \u201ctools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Few manufacturers build cars with such a strong, almost stubborn philosophy of \u201c<strong>how a car should be<\/strong>.\u201d This was especially true of Mercedes in this era.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase <strong>\u201cThe best or nothing\u201d<\/strong> is famous as Mercedes\u2019 corporate motto, and the AMG E60 perfectly embodies this ideal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Parents Are Porsche and Mercedes 500E Are you familiar with the Mercedes W124 E-Class model called the 500E (later known as the E500)?
