You should stand firm and say, \u201c<strong>This is where we stand<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nThe client pays us, but in return, we bring expertise and value that help their business grow and develop. That\u2019s why I believe the relationship should be one of equals.<br \/>\nOf course, if we\u2019ve fallen short in some way, we have to apologize and respond sincerely. But there\u2019s no need to be more submissive than necessary.<br \/>\nIf that relationship and balance are off from the start, it can be very difficult to put things right later.<\/p>\n<p>That was his take.<\/p>\n<p>Diplomacy between nations\u2014what an interesting way to look at it. I\u2019d never approached a business negotiation that way before. Then my husband went on:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">The thing is, I go into most business meetings without any real intention of trying to win the work, haha.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s no need to take on work at all costs. If anything, I don\u2019t like being too busy, so I\u2019m rarely thinking, \u201cI have to land this job no matter what.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd work you\u2019ve forced your way into often doesn\u2019t go well down the road.<br \/>\nSo even in an initial meeting, I don\u2019t explain our services unless they ask. In fact, I\u2019ll sometimes honestly say, \u201c<strong>Another company\u2019s services might be a better fit for you<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nI also don\u2019t follow up afterward with, \u201c<strong>Have you made a decision? When can we expect to hear back?<\/strong>\u201d<br \/>\nThey may think, \u201cThis person doesn\u2019t seem very interested,\u201d but, surprisingly, I often hear from them a few months later: \u201cWe\u2019d like to go ahead with what we discussed.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd when a project starts because the client has come to us, things often go well from there, too.<\/p>\n<p>That was his approach.<\/p>\n<p>What a decidedly unenthusiastic attitude\u2026 But somehow, I really understood what he meant. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28848\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/EA4DDFB8-6932-4A8A-A1C2-12C894CD7DAA-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Sakurajima and a Porsche 911\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Be_the_Kind_of_Person_Whos_Hard_to_Handle\"><\/span>Be the Kind of Person Who\u2019s Hard to Handle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As we talked, my husband said, \u201c<strong>That reminds me\u2014there\u2019s a quote by Saig\u014d Takamori that I really like<\/strong>,\u201d and emailed it to me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">\u201cA person who wants neither money, fame, nor life is difficult to handle. But without such people, great deeds cannot be accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I want money and my life (though I can do without fame)\u2026 haha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Someone who wants no money, fame, or life is basically \u201c<strong>invincible<\/strong>.\u201d There\u2019s nothing to fear.<br \/>\nPeople like that don\u2019t listen to what everyone around them says, and they can be pretty wild in the way they act. But it\u2019s true\u2014they\u2019re the ones who can accomplish great things.<br \/>\nAnd in your case, Mina, if you take it to the extreme, it\u2019s not as if the company absolutely has to increase its revenue.<br \/>\nI\u2019m the main breadwinner in our household right now, so it\u2019s not as though \u201c<strong>we won\u2019t be able to get by unless the company brings in more money<\/strong>.\u201d Even if the company\u2019s revenue doesn\u2019t grow, we\u2019ll manage. It\u2019s not going to kill us. So there\u2019s no need to panic.<br \/>\n<strong>You don\u2019t have to be easy to deal with. In fact, it\u2019s okay to be difficult.<\/strong><br \/>\nThere\u2019s no need to take on work at the expense of your principles. Just stand tall and think, \u201c<strong>It\u2019s completely fine if you decide not to work with us<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nThat kind of confidence and conviction will become part of your presence\u2014something that makes the other side think, \u201cWait, there\u2019s something a little different about this person.\u201d And then the work will follow.<br \/>\nSo don\u2019t rush.<\/p>\n<p>That was what he told me.<\/p>\n<p>After that conversation, my mind was made up, and I was able to act right away.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose I have a somewhat masculine way of thinking\u2026 When I talk things over with my husband, it\u2019s usually because I\u2019ve already thought them through and decided what I\u2019m going to do. I\u2019ll ask, \u201c<strong>This is what I\u2019m thinking of doing. What do you think?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind is usually already made up, and all I want is a final push. But this time, he helped me see that <strong>I didn\u2019t have to give ground to make that decision\u2014I could stand firm and take pride in my position<\/strong>.
