It was so much fun that <strong>my image of air-cooled Porsches completely changed<\/strong>, and I want to share that experience today.<\/p>\n<p>A few days ago, my husband went to Royu Driveway in the morning and came home saying this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Today, a <strong>992 GT3 Touring owner even came all the way from Kyushu, and TAKURO-san showed up in his 964<\/strong>. Why don\u2019t you head to Royu this afternoon? The kids will stay home and watch.<\/p>\n<p>He said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28877\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/BAC76E12-E825-41D7-AD98-87F4E935F5B7-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 GT3 (992)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As usual, being a homebody, I grumbled things like <strong>\u201cNo thanks, I\u2019m not wearing makeup today\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cI won\u2019t go because I don\u2019t want more sunspots from tanning\u201d<\/strong>, but<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cCome on, just go! Opportunities like this are rare!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>he pushed me, so I decided to head to Royu.<\/p>\n<p>That day, I got to drive both the 911 GT3 Touring (992) and the 964, but I\u2019ll share my impressions of the 992 GT3 Touring in another article.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Test_Drive_of_the_Air-Cooled_Porsche_964_MT\"><\/span>Test Drive of the Air-Cooled Porsche 964 (MT)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At Royu Driveway, I had the privilege of test driving TAKURO-san\u2019s 964, and I was amazed in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>The first surprise was, <strong>\u201cWhat a youthful, lively 911 this is!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/16280A2C-BDA4-4E14-8623-E83DEDB95D23-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 964\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the start in first gear, it had a strong, assertive push forward. You could say it\u2019s torque-rich. <strong>Even in first gear, it surged ahead smoothly as if being pushed from behind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to believe this car was made about 30 years ago. I was surprised by how fresh and vibrant it felt, like a modern car still in its prime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It felt more solid and planted than our own 911, yet there was absolutely no heaviness.<\/strong> On the contrary, it felt powerful, strong, and very reassuring.<\/p>\n<p>Next surprise was the <strong>ease of driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since it was my first time driving an MT air-cooled Porsche, I was worried <strong>\u201cIt must take some skill\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cI\u2019ll probably stall a lot,\u201d<\/strong> but I was able to drive it quite normally.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28874\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/2A70E1E4-E83A-4AD4-AFB1-99CC57D72AF7-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Air-cooled Porsche 964\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, I had come wearing ordinary flat shoes (I really need to buy driving shoes\u2026), and every time I operated the clutch, my shoe almost slipped off, so I asked TAKURO-san, <strong>\u201cCan I take my shoes off and drive barefoot?\u201d<\/strong> and he kindly allowed me to.<\/p>\n<p>Also, when starting off, I tried to follow the Porsche way of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%E3%83%9D%E3%83%AB%E3%82%B7%E3%82%A7%E3%81%AEmt%E8%BB%8A%E3%81%AE%E6%AD%A3%E3%81%97%E3%81%84%E7%99%BA%E9%80%B2%E3%81%AE%E4%BB%95%E6%96%B9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong\u201clifting the clutch to let the car gently move forward, then pressing the accelerator\u201d<\/strong><\/a>, but I ended up flooring the gas pedal a bit too much\u2026 (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>Also, the shift lever is positioned a bit more forward than in modern Porsches, so there were several moments when I reached out with my right hand expecting the lever but it wasn\u2019t there. I think I\u2019ll get used to that with more driving.<\/p>\n<p>The third surprise was how <strong>fast<\/strong> it was. It\u2019s genuinely fast. Whether in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear, acceleration was strong and quick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I bet it feels amazing and exhilarating on the highway.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/082353A1-F12C-4692-8131-22FD326FEF7A-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Air-cooled Porsche 964\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Because of their cute looks, air-cooled Porsches are often thought of as <strong>\u201cslow, dawdling cars.\u201d<\/strong> My husband has mentioned several times that <strong>he was tailgated while driving the 964 on the highway.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But <strong>don\u2019t underestimate the power of the 964.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contrary to its adorable image, it\u2019s incredibly fast when you push it. It\u2019s a genuine high-performance Porsche.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth surprise was how <strong>exceptionally well it corners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, if you don\u2019t pay attention to weight transfer and just turn casually, it will drift wide, but if you drive consciously, it grips and turns firmly. Modern 992s are more precise and respond exactly as you want, but\u2026 <strong>I felt the 964 offered a more direct connection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/5F5C59F5-0398-4BC5-B0EC-718541846F3A-1280x853-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 964\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fifth surprise was how <strong>incredibly enjoyable<\/strong> it was to drive.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know why it felt so good, but it was just pure joy. I rolled down the windows, felt the breeze, and kept saying, <strong>\u201cWow, this is so much fun! It feels amazing!\u201d<\/strong> the whole time, completely thrilled.<\/p>\n<p>The 964 offers a different kind of driving pleasure than modern Porsches. <strong>Without any flashy gimmicks, everything is balanced perfectly, natural, and just feels great.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TAKURO-san\u2019s 964 is in like-new condition, so the engine noise wasn\u2019t very loud, but even without loud engine sounds, it felt wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>As I write this, I realize these surprises also apply when driving modern Porsches. The Porsche spirit remains unchanged, whether in a 30-year-old model or a brand-new one.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m reminded once again how amazing Porsche is.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_All_Depends_on_Maintenance\"><\/span>It All Depends on Maintenance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When I got home and told my husband, <strong>\u201cIt was amazing!\u201d<\/strong>, he said this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Right?
