It also had PCCB brakes, while the cabin featured the white stitching from the GTS Interior Package.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28811\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28811\" class=\"wp-image-28811 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/7B2F511B-9FC4-40F0-B215-BCD099C644DB-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28811\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It\u2019s a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive Carrera GTS, but it has the center trim piece exclusive to the Carrera 4 models fitted as an aftermarket addition. It looks fantastic.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/9E161D06-769C-4240-821C-480F0A5E4F7B-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/CEFFB4CB-C795-4B1E-AB08-B0280E0D25E7-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Embroidered seat in the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I like that the owner opted not to have red stitching. It keeps the cabin accents in balance with the yellow PCCB brake calipers.<\/p>\n<p>One detail worth calling out: despite being a GTS, this car has the standard PASM chassis. From the 991.2 onward, the GTS Coupe came standard with the PASM Sport Chassis, which lowers the car by about 10 mm. Most buyers choose the sport chassis for its lower stance, but this particular car has standard PASM.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28821\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28821\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/00DFBD2A-83CE-4949-B212-5DB74FDE75A7-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Front ground clearance of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The standard PASM chassis on the 991.2.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_28822\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28822\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28822\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/60FE5F0E-4D44-490F-984A-32713775D465-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Front ground clearance of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ground clearance on my 991.1, which came standard with the regular PASM chassis.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So its ride height is almost the same as my 991.1 GTS. There\u2019s room for just over three fingers between the front tire and the wheel arch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 991.2 GTS I reviewed previously had the standard PASM Sport Chassis, which made for a fairly firm ride. My wife, who was pregnant at the time, wasn\u2019t especially keen on it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I remember thinking that if you wanted a ride that firm, you might as well go all in and get a GT3.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Same GTS, Different Character<\/h3>\n<p>The engine fires up with its familiar, booming bark. <strong>The startup and idle seem a little louder on the 991.2 than on the 991.1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I ease onto the throttle and pull away. The first difference I notice is the PDK calibration.<\/p>\n<p>The owner had noticed it too when comparing the car with my 991.1: <strong>the 991.2 seems to creep more strongly, as if the clutch engages at lower revs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/9FE7D7B0-D477-46C8-8F63-643C8CD412AB-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"PCCB brakes\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 991.1 feels as though the clutch engages after the revs rise ever so slightly, while the 991.2 seems eager to move forward almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I feed in more throttle and build speed. <strong>The ride is noticeably more comfortable.<\/strong> It\u2019s clearly different from the PASM Sport Chassis in the car I drove before.<\/p>\n<p>The tires feel softer over bumps, giving the car a more refined feel. On smooth pavement, the ride is excellent. Compared with the standard PASM in my 991.1, it feels quite similar but even more polished, <strong>as if it takes the edge off unnecessary vibrations and impacts from the road.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, on rough pavement you still feel the characteristic firmness of a 911, but it\u2019s less unsettled than the sport chassis over broken surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan to drive on track, I\u2019d definitely recommend the PASM Sport Chassis. <strong>But for a GTS\u2014short for \u201cGrand Touring Sport\u201d\u2014the standard PASM setup seems better suited to the car\u2019s character.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Engine Differences<\/h3>\n<p>The 991.2\u2019s 3.0-liter turbocharged engine produces 450 PS, around 20 PS more than the 991.1 GTS. But from behind the wheel, the difference feels even greater.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s especially noticeable when the tachometer needle is on the left half of the dial. <strong>Accelerating from low speeds in second gear, for example, really brings out the contrast.<\/strong> The 991.2 delivers a strong surge of acceleration right from the start, while the 991.1 doesn\u2019t feel quite as forceful.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28818\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28818\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/6BC8739A-F709-4049-842C-B166F3A4D674-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Sport exhaust on the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 991.2\u2019s sport exhaust has twin center-mounted outlets.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The engine feels terrific. <strong>Turbo lag is minimal, and the torque builds without a sudden, abrupt surge,<\/strong> so it can almost feel like a large-displacement naturally aspirated engine.<\/p>\n<p>In character, it\u2019s closer to the Carrera engine in the 992. It feels quite different from the engine in the 991.2 S.<\/p>\n<p>Because the torque delivery is so smooth, <strong>the car feels composed on Japan\u2019s winding roads, even when you\u2019re modulating the throttle on and off.<\/strong> The engine\u2019s torque is substantial, of course, so there are times when it\u2019s not practical to rev it out the way you might a naturally aspirated engine. Still, the engine rarely feels stressful to drive.<\/p>\n<p>The engine isn\u2019t quiet by any means. It delivers the kind of volume you\u2019d expect from a GTS and gets you in the mood to drive. Compared with the 991.2, I think the 991.1 has more sound pressure and a more pronounced rise in pitch, but <strong>I doubt most owners would be disappointed with the 991.2\u2019s engine note.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Compared with the 992\u2019s engine, <strong>it has less mechanical noise and a cleaner sound.<\/strong> You could think of its sound as sitting somewhere between the 991.1 and the 992.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">PDK Differences<\/h3>\n<p>After driving my 991.1, the owner remarked, \u201c<strong>The PDK feels different.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re right: the PDK is calibrated differently. As mentioned earlier, the cars behave differently when pulling away, but the shift speed is an even bigger difference. You can see it clearly in the tachometer: the needle drops at a different speed during upshifts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/9F84DD13-D5AB-4ED7-A6D6-2DB04B568BBC-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>On the 991.2, the tach needle drops with a quick, crisp flick at each shift.<\/strong> The 991.1 is by no means slow, but the difference is unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>The owner said they\u2019d like the PDK to shift \u201c<strong>a little more gently.<\/strong>\u201d There\u2019s no particular shift shock, but even in everyday city driving, it can feel \u201c<strong>like it doesn\u2019t need to shift quite so quickly.<\/strong>\u201d They\u2019d prefer a slightly more relaxed shift in normal driving.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Handling Differences<\/h3>\n<p>The handling feels more polished and planted than the 991.1. However, <strong>the change is more subtle than the step from the 981 Cayman and Boxster to the 718 (982), which arrived around the same time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rather than feeling like a completely different car, it\u2019s a natural evolution: the handling feels more precise, and the car as a whole seems more stable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/60E2115A-FF9A-4131-B10E-D7A45D3256B0-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28809\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/178E1371-164E-4B3C-B8BA-EC01AD1DFA3C-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (991.2 and 991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, it\u2019s a rear-wheel-drive car with a powerful turbo engine. If I attack my usual uphill bends as I would in my 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS, the extra torque can make the front end feel a little light. In a few spots, I find myself consciously easing off the throttle to keep weight on the front tires.<\/p>\n<p>I think <strong>the difference between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive matters more here than the difference between the 991.1 and 991.2.<\/strong> Even so, I didn\u2019t notice this to the same extent in the rear-wheel-drive 991.1.<\/p>\n<p>For what it\u2019s worth, I don\u2019t feel that lack of front-end load when driving my 992, a rear-wheel-drive Cabriolet, in the same way. The 992\u2019s chassis and control systems may simply be that good.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Porsche 911 (991.1) or (991.2)?<\/h3>\n<p>This is probably a question many buyers wrestle with. <strong>In terms of overall performance, the 991.2 is clearly superior.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Many people will also find the 991.2\u2019s sharper rear-end design more attractive.<\/strong> The two generations look quite similar at first glance, but there are plenty of differences when you compare them closely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then there\u2019s the engine: turbocharged or naturally aspirated?<\/strong> I prioritized that difference and deliberately bought a 991.1, not because I thought it was better on paper, but simply because I love the feel of a naturally aspirated engine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/80F2152E-D4A7-4123-B0D2-CAB2FD4FC2EB-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (991.1 and 991.2)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no single right answer. Think about which matters most to you\u2014performance, design, or how the engine feels\u2014and what kind of character you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you chose the one that wasn\u2019t quite right for you, I doubt you\u2019d regret buying either of these cars.
