day, my 991 early Carrera 4 GTS was due for inspection, so I took it to the dealer.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, <strong>I was able to borrow a Macan S as a loaner<\/strong>, so I\u2019d like to share my impressions. This Macan is the pre-touchscreen interior model currently on sale, featuring the 2019 minor facelift with the connected rear tail lamps, often called the mid-cycle model.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28468\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28468\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/766DF837-AF10-4B91-B242-A41CBB25BDA5-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The connected rear tail lamps started with the mid-cycle model.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_28481\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28481\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/F30A362D-74A6-47D4-934E-50965F828CAC-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hankook tires approved by Porsche<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The specs include a 3.0 L (2,995 cc) V6 turbo engine. This is the same 3.0L engine found in the base model of the current Cayenne, differing from the 2.9L (2894 cc) engines in the GTS and Turbo models.<\/p>\n<p>It produces 354 ps (260 kW) at 5400\u20136400 rpm, with a maximum torque of 48.9 kg\u00b7m (480 N\u00b7m) at 1360\u20134800 rpm, delivering ample power. The 0\u2013100 km\/h acceleration with the Sport Chrono Package is 5.1 seconds, making it impressively quick for an SUV.<\/p>\n<p>This particular car is equipped with 18-inch standard wheels and <strong>features conventional coil springs (PASM), not air suspension.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Differences_in_Cabin_Space_Compared_to_the_Cayenne\"><\/span>Differences in Cabin Space Compared to the Cayenne<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I immediately opened the beautifully Carmine Red front door and settled into the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the higher ride height, visibility is excellent. Looking toward the passenger side, the distance to the passenger door feels closer than in the Cayenne. <strong>Looking back at the rear seats, it\u2019s clear that the Macan is more cramped than the Cayenne.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That said, it offers roughly the same space as a C-segment hatchback or wagon, so <strong>it\u2019s about the same or slightly roomier than the rear seats of the inherently spacious VW Golf.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/8FF8114A-2596-4B1D-AD0F-A434C1557A64-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28485\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28485\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/B696B4AC-4F21-4574-9760-709E58719C80-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Cayenne offers noticeably more rear space.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you want to travel comfortably with five family members, the Cayenne is the better choice, but <strong>for a family of four, the Macan is more than sufficient.<\/strong> The main difference lies in the space between the front and rear seats.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ride_Comfort_Impressions\"><\/span>Ride Comfort Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Starting the engine, it\u2019s very quiet. Like other Porsches, the tach needle dances up to around 2000 rpm at startup, but the engine sound inside the cabin is quite subdued. Even without the sport exhaust, <strong>it feels much tamer compared to the early Macan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>However, the startup and exhaust sounds outside are quite bold,<\/strong> giving off a vibe that sets it apart from other SUVs. That\u2019s a performance worthy of the Porsche name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/7667FE11-EF0D-4873-B53C-7C5CF05892E7-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When starting off slowly, <strong>the tire rolling feel and smoothness don\u2019t quite match the Cayenne.<\/strong> However, <strong>on low-speed roads with many bumps, the Macan experiences less shaking and feels flatter.<\/strong> Conversely, <strong>at higher speeds, the Cayenne\u2019s smoothness and flatness take the lead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Cayenne\u2019s large body and off-road capability mean it sometimes exhibits the typical SUV sway at very low speeds, but <strong>the Macan behaves more like a sports car,<\/strong> lightly absorbing and controlling road irregularities at low speeds\u2014this is a major difference.<\/p>\n<p>That said, please don\u2019t take this evaluation at face value.<\/p>\n<p>Because, <strong>as is typical with Porsche, the ride quality varies greatly depending on options (air suspension, coil springs, PASM) and wheel size,<\/strong> so please consider this as a general reference.<\/p>\n<p>From my various experiences, overall, the Macan\u2019s suspension feels less refined in terms of road noise and quietness compared to the Cayenne. Depending on tire size, <strong>the current Cayenne with coil springs and the Macan with air suspension offer comparable ride comfort.<\/strong> The Macan with coil springs delivers a sporty, firm yet comfortable ride\u2014not bad at all.<\/p>\n<p>If you want even more refinement and the smoothness of the Cayenne, I recommend opting for air suspension.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"City_Driving_and_the_One_Drawback\"><\/span>City Driving and the One Drawback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Next, <strong>I drove in stop-and-go city traffic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a light touch on the accelerator, the Macan S smoothly gains speed. The PDK shifts very smoothly, feeling even more refined than the early model\u2014almost like a torque converter automatic Tiptronic.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>I want to point out the one dissatisfaction I have with this Macan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a common issue among recent turbocharged high-performance Porsche models, <strong>not just the Macan S. From what I\u2019ve seen, the 992 S variants, Cayenne S, and Panamera S and above exhibit similar behavior.<\/strong> (One reason I often recommend the base models!)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2B119AC6-F966-4345-8A81-250F43895F32-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan gauges\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Imagine driving on a smooth-flowing national road at 50\u201360 km\/h. The car ahead signals left to enter a convenience store or carefully turns left at a crosswalk.<\/p>\n<p>As the lead car slows, you brake and reduce speed to around 20 km\/h. The PDK drops from 5th or 6th gear down to 3rd or 2nd, with engine speed around 1000\u20131100 rpm.<\/p>\n<p>Then, as the lead car moves away, the Macan S tries to accelerate again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here lies the problem: it doesn\u2019t accelerate smoothly.<\/strong> The Macan S\u2019s maximum torque band starts at 1360 rpm. Although this is a fairly low rpm range, decelerating in this scenario drops the engine below that torque band.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only a 200\u2013300 rpm difference, but it causes a significant issue. Because it\u2019s a high-performance turbo engine, <strong>there\u2019s a slight turbo lag, and torque rises very sharply, so depending on how you press the accelerator, the response can be quite jerky.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/409C49E2-F87C-4D3A-A022-19778D4B1CCD-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan center console\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you press gently, it\u2019s not too noticeable, but that\u2019s hard to do. Drivers accustomed to the strong power at 50\u201360 km\/h unconsciously expect the same strength when pressing the accelerator.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Macan doesn\u2019t respond as expected. \u201c<strong>Huh?<\/strong>\u201d you think and press harder.<\/p>\n<p>At that moment, the engine hits the steep torque curve marked by the red circle below, and combined with the 2nd gear ratio, it suddenly accelerates aggressively. The driver thinks, \u201c<strong>No need to accelerate that abruptly&#8230;<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28472\" style=\"width: 874px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28472\" class=\"wp-image-28472 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/EE04480A-DFB7-4C1A-94F3-82C6034A1BF7.jpeg\" alt=\"Macan S torque curve\" width=\"864\" height=\"514\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Normal mode city driving, it\u2019s easy to fall into this red circle zone, causing turbo lag and sudden torque changes that make acceleration jerky.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is a subtle but real source of stress. After a week, I\u2019ve gotten somewhat used to it, but I wish acceleration were more seamless and smooth.<\/p>\n<p>This issue only occurs in Normal mode, so <strong>if you dislike it, just drive in Sport mode or higher, or manually operate the PDK.<\/strong> Sport mode keeps the revs within the torque band, making driving much easier.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, <strong>the Normal mode control and gear ratios of Porsches from this era are too eco-oriented.<\/strong> While understandable due to regulations, Porsche drivers expect a direct connection between the right foot and the tires.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highway_Impressions\"><\/span>Highway Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On the other hand, on smooth rural national roads and highways, it\u2019s very easy to drive. The excellent stability and tire contact give the driver confidence and allow trusting the car.<\/p>\n<p>I took a short tour to Wakayama, so I\u2019ll share more detailed impressions from that trip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/5FB95C05-BF8B-4022-A57E-E3F142DA01B3-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving scenery\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the highway, the Macan\u2019s performance is flawless. <strong>Its superb straight-line stability and cornering confidence at high speeds feel almost invincible.<\/strong> Overtaking acceleration is ample, and few will find fault with the ride quality.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s true that those buying the Macan as a luxury vehicle or seeking even more refinement and <strong>extra smoothness should opt for air suspension or choose the Cayenne.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still, <strong>if you don\u2019t compare directly, the PASM coil spring setup is more than adequate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_About_Winding_Roads\"><\/span>How About Winding Roads?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After exiting the highway, I headed south on Route 424 in Wakayama, then onto Prefectural Route 198. This is where the Macan shines. It\u2019s like a \u201ctall Cayman!\u201d\u2014no joke\u2014attacking corners aggressively. With Sport Plus mode engaged, PASM damping maxed out, and using paddle shifters, <strong>it moves with agility that hardly feels like an SUV.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/9049A1B1-7C58-40B1-A0F1-6B16C9FD1D48-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving scenery\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it can\u2019t beat a Cayman or Boxster, but this level of agility is on a different level from other SUVs. It feels like driving a high-performance hatchback.<\/p>\n<p>I once described the Panamera as feeling smaller the more you push it on winding roads. The Macan feels like <strong>its ride height lowers the more aggressively you drive.<\/strong> If it had air suspension, the physical lowering of the ride height would further lower the center of gravity and sharpen handling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The steering feel is pure Porsche.<\/strong> It\u2019s not overly quick, but the steering gain builds progressively with input, just like the 911, Cayenne, and Panamera. <strong>It\u2019s unmistakably Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve heard that because the Macan\u2019s base price is relatively low, some mistake it for a \u201ccheap Porsche\u201d compared to similarly priced SUVs or Japanese SUVs, but <strong>frankly, it\u2019s in a different league in terms of driving performance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Macans_AWD_Control_and_Brakes\"><\/span>Macan\u2019s AWD Control and Brakes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Macan shares its platform with Audi and is based on a front-engine, front-wheel-drive platform, but it normally distributes torque 20% front and 80% rear.<\/p>\n<p>So, <strong>it\u2019s a rear-biased car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Watching the AWD torque distribution on the instrument panel, it differs significantly from the 911 Carrera 4 series, tending to send torque more aggressively to the front. Even in situations where the 911 might be 30:70, the Macan shows 50:50, indicating a front-focused torque distribution.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/A405711B-9AB7-4187-862E-353860192EF8-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Macan AWD control monitor\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t cause any noticeable handling drawbacks, but unlike the 911, you can sense it\u2019s an AWD vehicle to some extent.
