That was a W12 coupe, and I drove it around town. This time, I had the chance to take a W12-powered convertible for a drive on winding mountain roads.<\/p>\n<p>My first impression of the Continental GT in the city was that it felt sportier than I\u2019d expected from a Bentley. Its basic driving character was very similar to the Panamera Turbo I owned at the time, though with an added layer of refinement. I remember thinking that, despite its softer edge, the sporty nature of its chassis was impossible to hide.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/9ED22932-BB02-4E17-B939-D7AE19AF015C-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1171254C-68D9-4373-8669-6EFA58F25873-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of the Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Continental GT Convertible is finished in British Racing Green, paired with a gorgeous brown interior. It has exactly the air of a car fit for an English gentleman, and I absolutely love the color combination.<\/p>\n<p>I settle into the generously padded seat, take my time adjusting its impressively versatile power settings, and start the engine. The 12-cylinder wakes with a beautifully even note. It\u2019s never rough or aggressive, yet there\u2019s a hint of sportiness to the sound. Bentley has got the tuning just right.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Rich_Character_of_the_60-Liter_W12\"><\/span>The Rich Character of the 6.0-Liter W12<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>From the moment we set off, the ride is superb\u2014even on those enormous 22-inch wheels. If I focus closely, I can just make out a hint of road texture through the low-profile tires, but that\u2019s about it. Other than that, there\u2019s no noticeable vibration or harshness.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/19470A49-0ED4-4CEA-8EBB-1076DEFC475E-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"W12 engine in the Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we pull out of the parking lot, I barely need to press the accelerator\u2014or even think about pressing it\u2014for the W12 to move this roughly 2.5-ton car with effortless torque. The fact that it delivers 900 Nm from just 1,350 rpm says it all. This is torque in its most effortless form, backed by an exceptionally rich, refined engine note and a wonderfully smooth feel as the revs rise.<\/p>\n<p>Modern high-performance diesels deliver impressive torque, too. But even the latest diesel engines can\u2019t replicate the W12\u2019s silky-smooth character, its sound, or the absence of fine vibrations through the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley made me feel as though I\u2019d just been reminded what true refinement really means.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sporty_or_Luxurious\"><\/span>Sporty or Luxurious?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How would the unexpectedly sporty character I noticed on my previous city drive translate to mountain roads?<\/p>\n<p>To find out, I press the accelerator further and switch to Sport mode, which firms up the suspension. As I approach a corner and turn the steering wheel, the car shows no hint of understeer\u2014even with that huge engine up front and all that weight to carry.<\/p>\n<p>It feels remarkably close to neutral, with very little body roll. Astonishingly little.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s no surprise, really: the car comes standard with Dynamic Ride, Bentley\u2019s active anti-roll system, similar in concept to Porsche\u2019s PDCC.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/E14CC07E-321F-492C-9C48-92A3C6739D14-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Wheel on the Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even in Sport mode, the ride is excellent, with no unpleasant noise or vibration. It\u2019s so comfortable that I actually ask the owner in the passenger seat to confirm which mode we\u2019re in.<\/p>\n<p>On mountain roads, the difference is clear: compared with the Panamera Turbo\u2019s almost pure sports-car character, the Bentley is much more luxurious.<\/p>\n<p>That said, this is still a Bentley. Even at a brisk pace, the chassis feels completely unruffled.<\/p>\n<p>In Sport mode, lifting off the accelerator brings a pleasing burble, and the shifts come with a \u201cpff! pff!\u201d sound reminiscent of a PDK. It all adds to the sporty atmosphere, but the sound is never loud\u2014just beautifully restrained.<\/p>\n<p>The exhaust and engine notes stay in the background like music, never getting in the way of conversation with your passenger.<\/p>\n<p>I give it a little throttle on a straight. There\u2019s a brief moment of turbo lag, then the W12 starts hauling those 2.5 tons forward with real determination. With 635 PS on tap, the car\u2019s weight means it doesn\u2019t accelerate like a supercar, but there\u2019s still plenty of power on offer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/B2F0D4D3-5CA6-49F2-B150-CBE5D9DB1B00-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the roof up or down, there\u2019s no noticeable loss of body stiffness. I switch from Sport to Bentley mode, the brand\u2019s recommended all-around setting.<\/p>\n<p>The steering feels a little softer than it does in Sport mode, and comfort takes another step up. Then I select Comfort mode, and the difference is quite pronounced: the body moves up and down in response to the undulations in the road.<\/p>\n<p>This is the Bentley ride I\u2019d imagined.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28286-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28286-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/9C0EACFC-AC0E-459A-8811-064EF830BE4D-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28286-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emblem exclusive to the Bentley centenary edition<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s wonderfully soothing\u2014like cruising across land in a luxury yacht, or gliding over a thick carpet. Unlike the floaty ride you sometimes find in luxury cars, though, the suspension is properly damped, so any movement settles almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension extends as the body rises, then compresses as it comes back down. The way it controls that downward movement is just right: it absorbs bumps with a soft, cat-like landing. The rebound and compression speeds aren\u2019t simply mirror images of each other, and that\u2019s part of what makes it so impressive.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a delightful contradiction: a ride that feels soft and plush, yet remarkably flat.<\/p>\n<p>I try taking a corner at a slightly quicker pace, and the Bentley works its magic once again. Despite that wonderfully supple suspension, there\u2019s very little body roll.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, you could almost say there\u2019s none at all.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no sense of the car wallowing or losing composure. As soon as it starts to turn, it feels as if it has instinctively switched into Sport mode\u2014without me noticing. There\u2019s absolutely nothing unnerving about it.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coupe_or_Convertible\"><\/span>Coupe or Convertible?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I never expected a car this enjoyable on mountain roads. When I drove the coupe around town, I wondered if it might be a little too sporty. But on these winding roads, it proves remarkably comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>The difference may have something to do with the speed at which I\u2019m driving, as well as the fact that this is a convertible. With no fixed roof, perhaps the car is able to absorb some impacts and vibrations more readily.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/10E51389-4D42-4E5E-AD98-F9120C644B24-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After driving it, I realized that if I were to buy a Continental GT, I\u2019d choose the convertible. It feels more luxurious and, to my mind, better preserves the Bentley qualities of substance and refinement. The coupe seems to pair comfort with sportiness, while the convertible brings a sporting edge to a more comfort-focused character.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it comes down to personal preference, and there\u2019s no single right answer.
