Or Luxurious?<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/bentley-gtc\/#Coupe_or_Convertible\" >Coupe or Convertible?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Continental_GT\"><\/span>Continental GT<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/continental-gt-testdrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">test-driven the Bentley Continental GT<\/a> when considering replacing my Panamera. That was the W12 coupe, and the test drive was in the city, but this time, <strong>I had the opportunity to drive the W12-powered convertible on mountain roads.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From my earlier city drive, the impression was that it felt sportier than the typical Bentley image. The basic ride quality was quite similar to the Panamera Turbo I was driving at the time, with a bit more smoothness added, but <strong>I remember thinking it was a car that couldn\u2019t fully hide the sporty nature of its chassis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/9ED22932-BB02-4E17-B939-D7AE19AF015C-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1171254C-68D9-4373-8669-6EFA58F25873-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Continental GT Convertible, finished in British Racing Green with a brown interior, is a truly stunning example. <strong>It exudes the aura of a true British gentleman\u2019s car, a color scheme I personally love.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Settling into the generously padded seats, I adjusted the impressively versatile power seats to my liking and started the engine. The 12-cylinder engine awakens with a perfectly tuned, refined sound from the moment it fires up. It\u2019s never harsh, yet somehow sporty. The craftsmanship in this tuning is remarkable.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Dense_6-Liter_W12_Engine\"><\/span>The Dense 6-Liter W12 Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Despite the massive 22-inch wheels, the ride quality from the start is superb.<\/strong> If you focus carefully, you can just barely feel the slight roughness of the asphalt due to the low-profile tires, but all other vibrations and shocks are completely absent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/19470A49-0ED4-4CEA-8EBB-1076DEFC475E-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"W12 engine of Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pulling out of the parking lot and gently pressing the accelerator\u2014or rather, just trying to press it\u2014the W12 engine effortlessly moves the roughly 2.5-ton giant with abundant torque. The 900 Nm from 1350 rpm is no joke. <strong>This is torque that truly embodies composure,<\/strong> and on top of that, the revving feel and sound are rich and luxurious.<\/p>\n<p>While the massive torque of modern high-performance diesels is impressive, the smoothness of this engine\u2019s revs, its sound, and the absence of micro-vibrations transmitted through the steering wheel are things no diesel, no matter how advanced, can imitate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I felt Bentley was teaching me what true refinement really means.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sporty_Or_Luxurious\"><\/span>Sporty? Or Luxurious?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How does the surprisingly sporty impression I got from the city drive change on mountain roads?<\/p>\n<p>To find out, I pressed the accelerator a bit more firmly. Driving in the firmest Sport mode, I approached a curve and turned the steering wheel. Despite having such a large engine up front and a heavy body, there was absolutely no sign of understeer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The steering is almost perfectly neutral, and body roll is incredibly minimal\u2014astonishingly so.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No wonder, as it seems to come standard with Dynamic Ride Active Roll Control, a system similar to Porsche\u2019s PDCC.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/E14CC07E-321F-492C-9C48-92A3C6739D14-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Wheels of Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even in Sport mode, the ride is excellent with no unpleasant noises or vibrations. It was so comfortable that I even double-checked the mode with the owner riding shotgun.<\/p>\n<p>When driving on mountain roads, <strong>it feels much more luxurious compared to the Panamera Turbo\u2019s almost pure sports car tuning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That said, it\u2019s still a Bentley. Even when driving at a brisk pace, the chassis feels completely confident and composed.<\/p>\n<p>In Sport mode, when you lift off the accelerator, you hear a tasteful burbling sound, and <strong>the gear shifts make a \u201cbaf! baf!\u201d sound almost like a PDK transmission,<\/strong> which really enhances the sporty feeling. Of course, these sounds are not loud or aggressive but very refined.<\/p>\n<p>The exhaust and engine sounds serve as background music, <strong>never interfering with conversation in the passenger seat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pressing the accelerator a bit harder on a straight, <strong>the W12 shows a slight turbo lag, but then eagerly propels the 2.5-ton mass forward.<\/strong> Given its 635 ps rating, it\u2019s not supercar quick due to the weight, but the acceleration is more than sufficient.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/B2F0D4D3-5CA6-49F2-B150-CBE5D9DB1B00-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whether the top is open or closed, there is absolutely no sign of body weakness or lack of rigidity. Switching modes to Bentley mode, the traditional recommended setting, <strong>which is the default mode,<\/strong> I took it for a spin.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to Sport mode, Bentley mode offers a slightly softer steering feel and greater comfort. Then switching to Comfort mode, the ride quality changes noticeably. <strong>The body moves up and down in response to road undulations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This, to me, is the Bentley ride quality I envision!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28286\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28286\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/9C0EACFC-AC0E-459A-8811-064EF830BE4D-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bentley 100th Anniversary Edition emblem<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s incredibly comfortable. This is a cruiser on land. The ride feels like driving on a thick carpet. But unlike the typical soft ride of Japanese luxury cars, <strong>the damping is so effective that any floaty sway settles immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The suspension extends upward and then compresses downward, but the way it slows the compression speed is exquisite. It absorbs shocks as softly as a cat landing, and the extension and compression speeds are not symmetrical, which is wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it <strong>achieves the paradox of feeling both soft and flat at the same time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I tried entering a curve at a slightly higher speed to see what happens. Here again, Bentley\u2019s magic shows. Despite the soft suspension, body roll is minimal.<\/p>\n<p>No, it\u2019s so little you could say it\u2019s almost nonexistent.<\/p>\n<p>So, there\u2019s no weak-kneed feeling. <strong>Once the turn starts, it feels as if you\u2019ve instantly switched to Sport mode without realizing it, with zero fear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coupe_or_Convertible\"><\/span>Coupe or Convertible?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Honestly, I didn\u2019t expect to enjoy this car so much on mountain roads. When I drove the coupe in the city before, I thought it might be a bit too sporty, but on mountain roads, it\u2019s very comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the difference in speed range, <strong>the fact that this time it was a convertible might also have influenced the experience.<\/strong> Without a roof, it may be better at absorbing shocks and vibrations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/10E51389-4D42-4E5E-AD98-F9120C644B24-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Bentley Continental GT Convertible\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After this drive, if I were to buy a Continental GT, I think I\u2019d prefer the convertible. It feels more luxurious and <strong>retains the weighty, luxurious character I associate with Bentley.<\/strong> Thinking about it, the coupe seems to emphasize comfort within sportiness, while the convertible emphasizes sportiness within comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, everyone has their own preferences, so I can\u2019t say which is better, but I hope this helps those considering a Continental GT purchase.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Continental GT I had previously test-driven the Bentley Continental GT when considering replacing my Panamera.
