What I Started This Year<\/h3>\n

As I\u2019ve mentioned briefly before, since the beginning of this year, I\u2019ve made it a point to visit my ancestors\u2019 graves once a month. I\u2019ve already been this month, so that makes about ten visits so far this year. By the way, the car I use for these trips is my Volkswagen Golf<\/a>. The roads leading to the graves are quite narrow and tight, so there\u2019s no way I could take the Panamera there.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Every time I get into the Golf, I\u2019m impressed by its performance to the point where I think, \u201cWhat a great car\u2026 maybe I don\u2019t even need the Panamera if I have this.\u201d<\/strong> However, after test driving the new Cayenne in September<\/a> and being amazed by its ride comfort and driving experience, I started to feel \u201cWait, was the Golf\u2019s ride always this rough?\u201d<\/strong> whenever I got behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

The new Cayenne was just too good\u2026 Even though the Golf is a fantastic car, it\u2019s a bit bittersweet to realize I might always feel this way from now on.<\/p>\n

Visiting Both Families\u2019 Graves<\/h3>\n

Back to the topic of visiting graves. Interestingly, my father and my husband both happen to come from the same rural town<\/strong>. I met my husband in Osaka through work, and I was really surprised when he told me where he was from. Even more surprising was that their families knew each other well enough to say things like \u201cOh, that\u2019s so-and-so, I know them\u201d<\/strong>, and they even share the same Buddhist temple affiliation. Because of this, my paternal family\u2019s graves and my husband\u2019s ancestors\u2019 graves are just a stone\u2019s throw apart.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite this, I had neglected visiting our ancestors\u2019 graves for a long time. It\u2019s a rural area with no train service and a 90-minute drive one way, but I think the main reason was that I didn\u2019t really have a strong feeling of \u201crespecting my ancestors.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the other hand, my husband, while not visiting every month, deeply values our ancestors and takes pride in his roots. Watching his attitude gradually changed my own feelings, and this year I decided to visit both families\u2019 graves monthly.<\/p>\n

Strangely, every time we visit, no matter how hard it\u2019s raining (for some reason, it often rains)<\/span>, the moment we arrive at the graves, the rain stops completely. Despite being famously a rain and fog magnet<\/a>, I find it amazing that the rain always stops. On one occasion, as soon as we lit candles and incense at my husband\u2019s family grave, the candle flared up fiercely and melted away almost instantly.<\/p>\n

It might have been a faulty candle, but it felt like a warm welcome from our ancestors, and gradually, visiting the graves became something I looked forward to.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When I put my hands together in front of the graves, I always think:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a miracle that I exist here and now in this place.<\/p>\n

If even one of the ancestors resting here were missing\u2014if my grandfather hadn\u2019t married my grandmother, if my great-grandparents hadn\u2019t met, or if any one of my ancestors had made a different choice\u2014I wouldn\u2019t be here today. I realize that I\u2019m not living by my own power alone; I\u2019m here now because I\u2019ve inherited the baton of life.<\/p>\n

Luck Is Turning Around<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve always had decent luck when it really counted, and despite many challenges, I\u2019ve made it this far alive. But since I started visiting the graves, I feel like my luck has been improving. The big flow of my life seems to have shifted over the past few months\u2026 as if a great force is carrying me to the next stage.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also noticed a change in my mindset. I\u2019ve come to think, \u201cInstead of focusing on what I don\u2019t have, I should really appreciate what I do have.\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019ve understood this intellectually for a long time, but emotionally I hadn\u2019t been able to embrace it. I think I had become stubborn because I couldn\u2019t get what I wanted most.<\/p>\n

Being naturally stubborn and not good at relying on others, I tend to want to handle things myself. I was afraid that if I accepted my current situation too easily, I\u2019d lose myself.<\/p>\n

But I realized that as long as I focus on those fears, I\u2019ll never be happy.<\/p>\n

Life is never 100% perfect; something is always missing. It will probably always be that way. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to truly appreciate what you have now, because happiness exists right there.<\/strong> The key is whether you can recognize it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just because of visiting the graves; I think it\u2019s a combination of my experiences, circumstances, and timing that have brought me to this feeling. But when I put my hands together in front of the graves, my weird pride disappears, and I feel I can honestly accept my situation as it is.<\/strong><\/p>\n
