target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GT3<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This time, <strong>I had the opportunity to test drive the Carrera S Cabriolet.<\/strong> Although it overlaps with previous experiences, this particular car does not have PCCB brakes.<\/p>\n<p>So, while this is a test drive report of the Carrera S Cabriolet, I want to focus on the differences in options and grades in this report.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Carrera_S_Cabriolet\"><\/span>Carrera S Cabriolet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This particular car was purchased by the husband of my wife\u2019s friend as his first Porsche.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is a 991 early model Carrera S Cabriolet.<\/strong> Originally, this car had just over 20,000 km on the odometer, but the exhaust, suspension, and wheels had been replaced with aftermarket parts. However, since it was in excellent condition, he restored everything back to stock before purchasing it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/376DBD3C-B3E9-4A40-9136-EFAB8D767320-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Carrera S Cabriolet (991 Early Model) with red interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28249\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/4AB4938B-A91E-4657-BCC1-8FA17687910F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Carrera S Cabriolet (991 Early Model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the way, I have driven and reported on quite a number of 991 early models, so please refer to those articles for more details.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Analyzing_Differences_While_Driving_the_Carrera_S_Cabriolet_Compared_to_Other_Grades\"><\/span>Analyzing Differences While Driving the Carrera S Cabriolet Compared to Other Grades<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine\"><\/span>Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When you start the engine and begin driving, the 3.8-liter naturally aspirated engine pushes the car forward with ease even at low RPMs. In the frequently used low to mid-range RPMs, the power difference compared to the GTS is hardly noticeable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/FA1550BD-93CA-4CE9-AD20-4AE9192D906C-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Carrera S Cabriolet (991 Early Model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the 3.4-liter engine in the Carrera sometimes feels a bit lacking in torque at low speeds compared to the S engine. Therefore, in stop-and-go city driving, you tend to press the accelerator a bit more.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>the Carrera\u2019s engine lets you confidently push it hard even on winding roads.<\/strong> Being able to rev it freely on Japan\u2019s smaller winding roads is a major appeal.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Suspension\"><\/span>Suspension<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>This Carrera S Cabriolet feels very good overall in terms of suspension.<\/strong> When restoring it to full stock, the suspension was replaced with new parts, which may explain why it feels so well planted yet supple in ride comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many 991 early models I\u2019ve driven, I think the Carrera S Cabriolet offers one of the best rides. Being an open-top body, it can absorb vibrations and shocks moderately. The supple ride quality reminds me of a slightly more refined version of the 981 Boxster\u2019s feel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28256\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/8387363B-D0D3-4F11-AAE1-052925278638-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Carrera S Cabriolet (991 Early Model) wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, this car and others equipped with classic wheels generally have better ride comfort. Whether this is due to the weight or wheel balance, I can\u2019t say for sure, but I recommend 991s with classic wheels.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_Sound\"><\/span>Engine Sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Thanks to the sports exhaust system, the engine sound is quite bold. The naturally aspirated sound that varies with speed and engine load is superb. <strong>It\u2019s no wonder the developers confidently call the 991 early model a \u20186-cylinder orchestra.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Switching to Sport or Sport Plus mode brings out loud burbling sounds.<\/p>\n<p>Listening to the burbling sound continuously can sometimes make you want to drive quietly, and some people may not like it. In that case, <strong>turning off the sports exhaust significantly reduces the burbling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note that the normal exhaust and the sports exhaust turned off may seem similar but are subtly different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The normal exhaust sounds quieter and a bit more refined, while the sports exhaust off mode is slightly louder with emphasized low tones.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brakes\"><\/span>Brakes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Regarding the presence or absence of PCCB brakes, ride comfort is not much different. At higher speeds, PCCB-equipped cars have a more supple suspension feel and a flatter ride. At very low speeds, normal brakes feel a bit smoother.<\/p>\n<p>And <strong>when it comes to braking performance, PCCB wins hands down.<\/strong> Anyone can tell the difference. Porsche\u2019s normal brakes are already excellent, but PCCB takes it to another level. It\u2019s impressive how little pedal effort is needed to slow the car effectively.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Handling\"><\/span>Handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The car\u2019s posture and feel in corners are flawless. It turns very naturally and confidently without any instability, which is very reassuring. The lack of a roof likely contributes to a lower center of gravity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even as a Cabriolet, it can drive very sportily,<\/strong> which might surprise those who have experienced open cars from other manufacturers. Porsche\u2019s Cabriolets are uncompromisingly engineered for driving performance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28255\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/6D3395EC-9642-44E7-A806-80272ADD505F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Carrera S Cabriolet (991 Early Model) emblem\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, when directly compared to the coupe, the sense of unity between car and driver is naturally stronger in the coupe, and the dialogue with the driver feels more precise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This Carrera S Cabriolet is obviously rear-wheel drive, but personally, I don\u2019t feel much difference compared to the all-wheel-drive Cabriolet.<\/strong> While the coupe clearly shows differences between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, <strong>those differences seem less noticeable in the Cabriolet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ride_Comfort_PDCC_PASM\"><\/span>Ride Comfort, PDCC, PASM<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Differences with PDCC-equipped cars are not very noticeable during casual, slow winding road driving. However, <strong>when PDCC Sport is turned on and you take tight corners energetically, the difference is very clear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Body roll is significantly reduced, and lateral sway of passengers is minimized. For those who like to drive spiritedly and often have a passenger in the front seat, this option is definitely worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>Owners with PDCC report that ride comfort in city driving is also improved, with less sway and more comfort. It\u2019s a recommended option for date cars or when frequently carrying a passenger.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/378190E6-0B01-415A-BD72-9785248A23A4-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Carrera S Cabriolet (991 Early Model) sports exhaust system\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Regarding PASM, ride comfort is generally better compared to normal suspension.<\/strong> It also reduces body roll, so it improves the car\u2019s performance. However, the charm of the normal suspension lies elsewhere. It makes it easier to feel weight transfer and enjoy cornering with a certain amount of body roll.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experienced drivers will likely find the normal suspension more enjoyable to \u2018control.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">Continue reading \u2192 Summarizing the appeal and uses of each grade!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Summing Up Each Grade in One Word<\/h3>\n<p>Having driven various 991 early models, <strong>I honestly feel each grade has its own unique charm.<\/strong> Here is my personal, subjective summary of the most suitable grades by use case.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">For enjoying mountain passes and winding roads (focus on driving pleasure)<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Carrera and Cabriolet models<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 3.4-liter engine in the Carrera is fun. It has just the right power to enjoy revving on Japanese mountain roads. I also recommend the normal suspension (non-PASM) for confident drivers.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">For enjoying mountain passes and winding roads (focus on speed)<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Carrera S and GTS models<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want more speed on larger winding roads or better acceleration on straights, the 3.8-liter S grade or higher is recommended.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Date car<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Targa, Cabriolet, 4WD, and Turbo models<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 991 early models generally have good ride comfort, but Targa and Cabriolet models are even better. Adding PASM or PDCC options makes them even more comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>All-wheel-drive models also offer good ride comfort, not just because of suspension but because the AWD reduces pitching front to rear, minimizing passenger sway. The Turbo models provide rich torque and an exquisite ride.<\/p>\n<p>They are exemplary cars that use abundant power for comfort.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Long-distance touring<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Carrera S, GTS, 4WD, and Turbo models<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Considering the power needed for comfortable high-speed cruising on long trips, S grade or higher is better. The 4WD models are ideal. They are all-weather, fast touring machines.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">City use<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Carrera S, GTS, and Turbo models<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In stop-and-go city driving, the 3.8-liter S engine is recommended. Its strong low-speed torque means less throttle input and less fatigue over long periods. Incidentally, <strong>with the 991 late model and 992 Turbo engines, this evaluation reverses, and the base Carrera becomes easier to handle in the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Circuit use<\/h4>\n<p><strong>GT3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No explanation needed here. For serious fun, the GT3 is the choice. Its overwhelming performance, engine, and gear ratios shine on the track rather than public roads.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>That\u2019s all for now, but <strong>the 991 early model is very popular recently, and good examples sell quickly.<\/strong> Personally, I expect prices to continue rising long-term, and availability to become even more limited.
