class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"964_Delivery\"><\/span>964 Delivery<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Last autumn, one morning while casually browsing <strong>Instagram, I saw a story from a certain shop announcing that a 964 with a manual transmission had arrived.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I captured the screen and immediately emailed TAKURO, who had been searching for a 964.<\/p>\n<p>He quickly contacted the shop and within a few days had already gone to see the car and finalized the deal. <strong>As expected, a capable man acts fast.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This particular car had been sleeping in a barn for over a decade, with mileage in the 20,000 km range.<\/strong> The shop planned a full restoration including suspension, engine, and transmission overhaul, as well as complete interior and exterior refurbishment before selling it.<\/p>\n<p>About four months later, the delivery day finally arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Since TAKURO had accompanied me when I took delivery of my Carrera 4 GTS before, this time I joined him.<\/p>\n<p>We took the Shinkansen to Hiroshima and arrived at the shop.<\/p>\n<p>There, a pristinely polished, exquisite 964 was majestically waiting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/66598FCA-7127-4646-9C49-236120106EAC-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28078\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The body was fully repainted with zero scratches, and the front even had a protective film applied.<\/p>\n<p>The interior had all the small rubber parts replaced and was beautifully restored.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28085\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I wondered if the new 964 looked like this back in 1990, as I felt like I had traveled back in time.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving the keys, we set off to drive back to Kansai. <strong>Since the engine and other parts had been overhauled, we planned to keep the revs below about 3,000 rpm to break it in gently.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At first, TAKURO was nervous with the unfamiliar manual transmission, but as we covered distance, his driving became smoother. The engine felt very torquey and powerful, fresh from the rebuild. The strong acceleration when pressing the gas in third gear was especially impressive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28092\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/34A0C6C1-3FC4-460C-BAD1-D58ABB38EB00-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving on the highway\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most notably, <strong>the mechanical noise was remarkably quiet.<\/strong> From startup to idling and driving, this was the quietest 964 I\u2019ve ever experienced. This is likely due to many new parts and updated insulators providing excellent soundproofing.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trouble_Discovered_Just_After_Delivery\"><\/span>Trouble Discovered Just After Delivery<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While driving through town for lunch, <strong>a CAT warning light appeared on the meter panel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CAT is the exhaust temperature warning light, required by Japanese law at the time and unique to Japanese-spec models. Generally, even if it lights up, as long as oil temperature is normal, it\u2019s usually nothing serious and often caused by faulty relays or sensors.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the light flickering on and off isn\u2019t great for peace of mind. We contacted the dealer but decided to keep an eye on it while driving.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2C01034A-BB91-428B-A443-181673972ABA-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The highway driving was very stable. Although I wanted to rev in third or fourth gear during acceleration, I held back and kept steady on the Sanyo Expressway.<\/p>\n<p>At a certain speed range, we felt vibrations in the steering wheel. <strong>Adjusting speed made the vibrations stop, revealing a wheel balance issue.<\/strong> That was the second problem discovered.<\/p>\n<p>While cruising, we noticed the clock on the meter panel wasn\u2019t working (sweat).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28095\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/5F5C59F5-0398-4BC5-B0EC-718541846F3A-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Wheels of Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28090\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/FC6EADE1-EB39-4B4C-AE09-9AA86D9436DD-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Meter panel of Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At a service area stop, the oil gauge needle moved sluggishly and barely budged, and the oil temperature gauge also behaved suspiciously. This was the third problem.<\/p>\n<p>Then TAKURO mentioned the seat was shifting slightly back and forth. Apparently, the seat was moving subtly with front-to-back G-forces. This was the fourth issue.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Then_a_Critical_Problem%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Then, a Critical Problem\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite these issues, we arrived safely in Kansai without trouble. <strong>Right after exiting the highway, we filled the tank,<\/strong> and to celebrate the delivery, we decided to have sushi for dinner.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28083\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/B738D27B-1950-4C25-BA23-571D3298601F-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After dinner, when we returned to the parking lot, we noticed a black stain under the 964\u2019s trunk. At first, we thought it was coolant, but since it\u2019s air-cooled, there\u2019s no coolant. Then we suspected oil, but after touching and smelling it, it was gasoline. <strong>Yes, gasoline was leaking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/73F21D99-50D8-460E-9BA9-85AF77399937-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Gasoline leak from Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We panicked. We couldn\u2019t start the engine, so <strong>we opened the trunk and peeled back the carpet to find gasoline leaking around the spare tire area.<\/strong> The car was undrivable. We immediately arranged for a tow truck and contacted the dealer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28081\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/D69B462A-DEC7-461B-9E7B-69F45805C010-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964 model) being towed\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, the 964 had to be sent back to the dealer as-is, ruining what should have been a perfect delivery day (cry).<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/restore-964\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Testing the re-delivered exquisite 964 on winding roads<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Retesting the 964<\/h3>\n<p>Several weeks passed, and with no proactive updates or even an apology from the dealer, TAKURO grew frustrated as the car wasn\u2019t returned. Finally, the 964 was re-delivered.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/DE2D2F4D-A639-453F-8831-ED18E753CF2B-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This time, the warning lights, meters, wheel balance, seat, and gasoline leak were all properly repaired. <strong>The gas leak was caused by deterioration of a gasket on top of the tank, which only became apparent when the tank was full.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even with such extensive work, buying a used air-cooled Porsche means expecting some issues. <strong>Anyone considering a classic or air-cooled Porsche should be prepared for this level of potential problems.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I were to advise someone buying an air-cooled Porsche, I\u2019d say it\u2019s inevitable that issues will arise, so don\u2019t expect perfection. Instead, choose your dealer based on their sincere response and communication speed. As I always say, when buying used cars, the quality of the shop and people is even more important than the car itself.<\/p>\n<p>The exquisitely restored 964 now radiated a wonderful aura.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately took it for a spin on my usual course.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/80374FE3-033B-4F2A-91EA-1912E4DDC9BE-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Difference Between 16-Inch and 17-Inch Wheels<\/h3>\n<p>Starting the engine, I was again surprised by the near-new level of quietness, even feeling a luxury akin to the 993. Once moving, the engine was very torquey. <strong>The 17-inch wheels felt significantly different from my 16-inch ones, with a much heavier, more substantial ride.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was honestly amazed by this difference. When I bought my 964, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrp930.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WRP<\/a> told me there\u2019s a notable difference between 16- and 17-inch wheels, but I never imagined it would be this pronounced.<\/p>\n<p>The 16-inch wheels offer a light, nimble feel from acceleration, with exceptional agility for lane changes and lateral movements. However, their grip and steering response under lateral G are inferior to the 17-inch wheels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 17-inch wheels feel heavier and more substantial from the start.<\/strong> Interestingly, I also drove a 993 Carrera S at the same time and was surprised by how similar the 17-inch 964 felt to it. The cornering grip and stability were excellent, though the rear grip felt a bit too strong, making the overall balance slightly understeery.<\/p>\n<p>This reminded me of when I upgraded from 15-inch to 16-inch wheels on my E36 BMW 318is \u2014 a similar sensation. Nowadays, a one-inch difference isn\u2019t so noticeable, but back then it made a big impact.<\/p>\n<p>The engine\u2019s revving feel is still a bit stiff but very responsive and powerful. The classic air-cooled engine\u2019s characteristic \u201cshaaaan!\u201d sound is yet to fully develop, but <strong>after about 10,000 km more, it should settle in nicely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/78C46C38-E3C2-462C-A757-0569B2A9CA56-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Shift knob of Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The shift feel is excellent and smooth. Compared to modern Porsches, the stroke is a bit longer but with solid detents. It\u2019s not quite the old Porsche synchro feel but very pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, <strong>it takes a little getting used to when shifting into second gear, but once accustomed, it\u2019s no problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The suspension has Bilstein shocks and is lowered about 1\u20132 cm, so the ride differs slightly from stock. The larger tires add a bit of firmness, but overall the ride is comfortable. The steering is sharper at the start of the turn and doesn\u2019t require as much front-end weight transfer to corner as stock.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Tiptronic vs. Manual<\/h3>\n<p>Driving the 964 with a manual transmission felt very fresh to me.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/4D46F66A-8753-4205-8C08-462DDC652293-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Regarding the difference from the Tiptronic (automatic), honestly, the power feel is almost identical. In fact, the Tiptronic lets you press the accelerator quickly and freely, and once you get used to it, you can shift gears up and down just by how fast you press the gas, sometimes making it feel faster.<\/p>\n<p>That said, <strong>when it comes to speed on tight mountain roads, the manual with its five gears wins.<\/strong> Especially the acceleration in second gear is quicker with the manual, so it\u2019s likely faster in tight corners.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">The Charm of the 964<\/h3>\n<p>The 964 is a 911 you want to drive endlessly. Its reliability is improved enough to feel mentally reassuring, and it\u2019s comfortable. Yet, <strong>it remains a true air-cooled Porsche that strongly preserves the original 911\u2019s character, striking a perfect balance between classic and modern.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-28098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8DD2D555-780F-4A11-A763-7CF181FA4C4B-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear emblem of Porsche 911 (964 model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After this test drive, I also drove my own 964 again and felt that I want to cherish and keep this car for a long time. The 964 is a masterpiece \u2014 it has the classic feel missing in the 993 but also the freshness not found in pre-930 911s.
