So in this article, I\u2019d like to share the stories behind how we each got started.<\/p>\n<p>My husband began his business about 15 years ago. Nowadays, he mostly delegates day-to-day operations to his employees and focuses on scouting future business opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>His trigger for starting up was attending a startup seminar held by the Chamber of Commerce on weekends.<\/p>\n<p>That said, he didn\u2019t join with a strong \u201c<strong>I\u2019m going to start a business!<\/strong>\u201d mindset. Rather, he thought casually,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201c<strong>What kind of people actually start businesses?<\/strong> Are they all incredibly talented like Horie-san or Fujita-san from CyberAgent? I don\u2019t have much to do on weekends anyway, so maybe I\u2019ll just drop by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He attended on a whim with a very light heart.<\/p>\n<p>But there was no one like Horie or Fujita there. Instead, the conversations were all about <strong>\u201cWhich financial institution is easiest to borrow from?\u201d \u201cWhere are the lowest interest rates?\u201d \u201cThis industry is booming lately, so maybe starting a business there would work out.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At that moment, my husband thought,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cI see\u2026 They say only a few survive after starting a business in Japan, and now I understand why. Entrepreneurs aren\u2019t necessarily special or brilliant. Maybe if I start a business, I might actually do okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After that, he was enthusiastically invited by other seminar participants and ended up entering a city-sponsored business plan contest, which he unexpectedly won\u2026 and that\u2019s how he started his company.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t set out with a firm plan to start a business; it was a series of coincidences and encouragement from those around him that led to the company\u2019s founding. That\u2019s the story of his entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Sparked_My_Entrepreneurship\"><\/span>What Sparked My Entrepreneurship<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As for me, I started my business at age 27.<\/p>\n<p>After joining a company as a new graduate, I was selling training programs that my company planned and operated to small and medium-sized business owners. I worked hard aiming to be the top salesperson and thankfully achieved that goal, but afterward, I suffered from burnout, lost my sense of purpose, and spent many days feeling stuck.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, a company president I was visiting asked me a question:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Do you have any goals for your future?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since I was struggling to envision one, I didn\u2019t know how to answer and blurted out, \u201c<strong>I want to be a president someday.<\/strong>\u201d I suddenly remembered that when I was a new employee, I once admired company presidents and thought, \u201c<strong>It\u2019d be nice to become one someday.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But since I said it without any real follow-through, that president got very upset and said, \u201c<strong>Don\u2019t say things like that lightly. Are you going to start a business or not?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, that president had only been running his own business for a few years and was deeply aware of how tough it was to increase sales. So maybe he couldn\u2019t forgive me, who knew nothing, casually saying \u201c<strong>I want to be a president.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And I, caught off guard by his intensity, ended up saying, \u201cI will start a business!\u201d (What a gullible personality\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201c<strong>Okay, I\u2019ll introduce you to lots of business owners. Come to the business owners\u2019 meetings.<\/strong>\u201d and at those meetings, he introduced me to venture entrepreneurs around Kansai, saying, \u201cThis girl is starting a business next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that time in Kansai, it was rare for a woman in her mid-20s to start a business. So everyone said things like:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re interesting, keep it up!\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s crazy you don\u2019t have anything planned yet, come by my office and I\u2019ll teach you!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They cheered me on, and I found myself in a situation where I couldn\u2019t back down after saying I\u2019d start a business on a whim\u2026 so I made up my mind and launched it (lol).<\/p>\n<p>By the way, when I told that president years later about this story, he completely forgot about it and said, \u201cHuh, really?\u201d (lol)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Most_Important_Thing_Is_Taking_That_First_Step\"><\/span>The Most Important Thing Is Taking That First Step<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Looking back now, both my husband and I think, \u201c<strong>How did we even start businesses in such situations?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, we were both riding high on a baseless confidence of \u201c<strong>I can do anything<\/strong>,\u201d but to put it in Dragon Quest terms, it was like charging into a cave with only a wooden stick and cloth armor, no save points, and no inn\u2014a reckless challenge.<\/p>\n<p>I definitely couldn\u2019t do that now because it\u2019s too scary.<\/p>\n<p>But my husband says,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">In Dragon Quest terms, <strong>even if you get wiped out by enemies, you can just restart from the church.<\/strong> You lose money, but you keep the experience. You don\u2019t actually die. It\u2019s the same with starting a business. Even if you hit a \u201cthis is bad!\u201d situation, somehow you manage. So I think it\u2019s good to try anything and everything.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s true\u2026 On a personal note, I recently finally finished repaying the loan I took out when I started my business. (I tweeted about it and got lots of likes\u2014thank you!)<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"ja\">After 13 years, I finally finished repaying the long-term loan from when I started my business. It felt endless, and many times I thought \u201cI might never pay it off,\u201d but now I\u2019m back to zero. Since last year, I\u2019ve started a new challenge at work, and I feel that the struggles I went through back then have been very helpful.<\/p>\n<p>My husband also said this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">If you\u2019re thinking about starting a business, it\u2019s important to take any small step forward. I took the small step of \u201cgoing to a startup seminar,\u201d and that changed my life. Instead of standing still because you don\u2019t know what to do, buy a book, attend a seminar\u2014anything to take that first step is important. Everyone\u2019s path to entrepreneurship is different. Also, I was impressed by Atsuhiko Nakata\u2019s YouTube introduction of the book \u201cDream-fulfilling Elephant,\u201d where he said, <strong>\u201cLife is a competition to make others happy.\u201d<\/strong> I think that\u2019s exactly right. <strong>The more you make people happy, the more money you earn in return.<\/strong> That\u2019s the rule of this world.
