What everyone consistently praises is the <strong>NA engine\u2019s sound and rev feel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While Porsche may still produce NA 911s in the future, this generation represents the last NA engine 911s from an era before stricter noise regulations and without GPFs. That makes many eager to get their hands on one now.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m one of them, having purchased an early 991 Carrera 4 GTS myself.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I had the chance to test drive a <strong>991 early Carrera 4S<\/strong>. While it\u2019s black, it has a strong metallic element with a very subtle reddish tint. <strong>If Jet Black Metallic leans toward a bluish black, this is best understood as a reddish black.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The interior features an all-leather Espresso finish costing 820,000 yen. Not only that, but the leather option extends behind the mirrors and even covers the rear seat center tunnel\u2014a level of luxury I\u2019ve never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, it includes seat ventilation, a BOSE sound system, carbon interior package, a center console with crest emblem, and 14-way sports seats\u2014truly an all-in setup.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27834\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27834\" class=\"wp-image-27834 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/06A52132-853E-4211-9C6A-C22736805B8A-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"911 rear footwell lighting\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Probably the rarest option in 911 history: rear footwell lighting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Performance options include the Sport Chrono Package, Sports Exhaust System, sports steering wheel, PDCC\u2014all fully equipped.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s almost like a Turbo S spec.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_Difference_Between_the_4S_and_4_GTS\"><\/span>What\u2019s the Difference Between the 4S and 4 GTS?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For this test drive, <strong>I want to focus on the differences compared to my own Carrera 4 GTS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>the engine sound heard from outside is quite loud.<\/strong> I listened to it climbing a winding road, and it was an elegant yet powerful sound. The PDK\u2019s shift blips are also fantastic. With the sports exhaust, the 4S produces a fairly loud roar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/E127A4A9-2D03-45B0-B50A-539EC3D34AEB-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"911 Carrera 4S sports exhaust system\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/37282039-2885-4F6E-98E8-26226D347A73-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"14-way sports seat\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sitting in the driver\u2019s seat, I adjusted the position. The 14-way sports seat has a wider cushion compared to the sports seat plus. This is similar to the relationship between the 992 sports seat and sports seat plus.<\/p>\n<p>Once underway, <strong>the sound inside the cabin feels somewhat quieter than the GTS.<\/strong> The ride is mild. More precisely, it doesn\u2019t have the firm tire contact feel of the GTS but rather a lighter impression, somewhat like the early 991 Carrera Cabriolet I previously drove.<\/p>\n<p>While the sense of road contact differs, the ride comfort of both GTS and 4S is generally very good.<\/p>\n<p>In normal mode, when cruising on winding roads, PDCC\u2019s effect is subtle, allowing gentle body roll and a relaxed feel through corners. Compared to the GTS in normal mode, the initial steering response feels a bit softer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27828\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/D292AB00-6CED-4E7E-972C-B9CD84BD91AE-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"911 Carrera 4S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To describe this ride, <strong>\u201crefined ride quality\u201d might be a more accurate expression than simply \u201ccomfortable.\u201d<\/strong> Anyone in the passenger seat wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s harsh or uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>Switching to sport mode, I revved the engine. Enjoying the razor-sharp PDK shifts, I accelerated. The sports exhaust valves opened, and a thrilling sound came from the rear. Compared to the GTS, the interior sound is noticeably different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The GTS resonates inside with a deep, rumbling \u201cgrrr\u201d sound, while the 4S is less aggressively sporty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though loud, the sound\u2019s character feels milder. This is likely due to differences in the sound symposer tuning and intake\/exhaust components between the two models.<\/p>\n<p>If you were to install the genuine power kit option\u2014essentially making the 4S engine the same as the GTS\u2014I imagine the sound and feel would become very similar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/D110643F-6487-47C1-8DB0-9AE5B7FAF4FF_1_105_c.jpeg\" alt=\"911 Carrera 4S instrument panel\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the way, <strong>do you feel a power difference between the GTS\u2019s 430ps and the 4S\u2019s 400ps?<\/strong> In short, yes. Up to around 4000 rpm, there\u2019s almost no difference, but beyond that, you can sense the torque difference during acceleration.<\/p>\n<p>There are moments when you wish the GTS would accelerate a bit more powerfully. Still, the 4S offers more than enough performance, so power is not a concern.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Signature_%E2%80%9CPDCC%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>The Signature \u201cPDCC\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I pressed the PDCC button and switched to sport mode. This is where the car truly shines.<\/p>\n<p>The roll control kicks in clearly, and the 4S transforms into a \u201cmagic carpet.\u201d Despite no noticeable stiffening of the suspension, <strong>body roll in corners is significantly reduced, shifting from a mild to a sporty feel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/B4A998AF-887B-4EF9-8673-19DA163FED5C-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"911 Carrera 4S controls\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The car feels more planted mid-corner, moving like a true sports car. Being all-wheel drive, traction is excellent, and the car launches forward like a catapult whenever you step on the gas.
