The early 991, Panamera, and Macan of the same era also have this system.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This has some surprisingly significant drawbacks. First, the design feels like an aftermarket add-on. More importantly, <strong><ins>while the domestic PCM systems output digital audio, the Japanese-spec navigation outputs analog audio.<\/ins><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a result, <strong><ins>the sound quality suffers somewhat, especially in BOSE-equipped cars of this era, which reportedly cannot fully realize their potential.<\/ins><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also, the line to the amplifier runs in parallel with the vehicle\u2019s main power supply, making it prone to picking up noise. When the battery load increases in Sport mode, for example, some cars experience audible noise. In my case, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/boxster-battery-202106\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">switching to a lithium-ion battery<\/a>, I was troubled by this faint noise.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, as of 2022, <strong>Clarion has already discontinued map update support for this navigation system,<\/strong> and even the dealer said there was nothing they could do.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, on long-distance tours around Japan, the navigation would often send me down non-existent roads or prompt me to exit an interchange prematurely despite the road continuing, causing increasing confusion day by day.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, <strong>for safety reasons, I reluctantly decided to replace the navigation system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Choosing_Display_Audio_Instead_of_a_Traditional_Navigation_System\"><\/span>Choosing Display Audio Instead of a Traditional Navigation System<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When considering the replacement, I set the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It must be a display audio system<\/li>\n<li>It must not spoil the interior design<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>First, the requirement for display audio was very important. For those unfamiliar, display audio refers to a car audio system with a screen but without a built-in navigation system.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, it looks like a regular navigation system but doesn\u2019t include maps from navigation manufacturers. Instead, it only has audio functions like radio and Bluetooth. So how do you get navigation? <strong>By connecting a smartphone (iPhone or Android) via USB cable, you can mirror the map apps on your phone (Google Maps, Yahoo! Car Navigation, Navitime, etc.) onto the display audio screen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is how navigation is used.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27946\" style=\"width: 1176px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27946\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27946\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/3358AAE2-9202-4A29-87BC-A61502CB5749.jpeg\" alt=\"Using smartphone navigation with CarPlay\" width=\"1166\" height=\"1166\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using smartphone navigation mirrored on the screen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By using smartphone navigation apps, you always have access to the latest map data, eliminating the need to pay expensive update fees or worry about support ending after a few years like with traditional navigation systems.<\/p>\n<p>This advantage is huge: <strong>not only do you get constantly updated maps, but you also benefit from real-time traffic info via your phone\u2019s data connection, and you avoid the risk of your navigation system becoming outdated after a few years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And best of all, the price is affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Typical in-car navigation systems cost around 80,000 to 150,000 yen, but <strong>the DMH-SZ700 costs about 55,000 yen at the time of writing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27985\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/F092DFA3-B6B3-4FF3-813E-5D3A1D2B71BA-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Regarding design, the DMH-SZ700\u2019s glossy yet modest display and simple, flat bezel blend well with the car\u2019s interior, preserving the atmosphere and giving a feel close to the factory PCM.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a larger 9-inch model, the DMH-SF700, but it looks more like an aftermarket addition and, given how I use my Porsche, I don\u2019t need such a large screen for in-car entertainment, so I chose the 7-inch SZ700.<\/p>\n<p>Installation was entrusted to <a href=\"https:\/\/bespoke-ag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BESPOKE in Osaka<\/a>, a company well known for their expertise with high-end imported cars\u2019 electrical systems.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27954\" style=\"width: 1180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27954\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/6D8B78CF-CE30-470A-86CC-268390A9A89F.jpeg\" alt=\"Boxster GTS during installation at BESPOKE\" width=\"1170\" height=\"1170\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boxster at BESPOKE during installation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Additionally, I requested that the system bypass the factory amplifier and output sound directly from the navigation unit\u2019s amplifier. This was because <strong>the factory amplifier\u2019s sound quality was poor, and to address the noise issue mentioned earlier.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Previously, when I removed the fuse for the factory amplifier, the noise stopped completely, so I suspected the noise source was either the amplifier or the wiring connected to it.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/dmh-sz700\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Actual Evaluation of the DMH-SZ700<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">DMH-SZ700 Review &#038; Evaluation<\/h3>\n<p>After leaving the car for a few days, I was notified that the installation was complete and went to pick it up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right away, I connected my iPhone and played music\u2014and was amazed! The sound quality was completely different.<\/strong> Even I, who am not an audiophile, could tell the difference, so I think most people would notice. Compared to the slightly muffled, light sound of the factory system, the DMH-SZ700 delivers clear, transparent sound with depth.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the speakers are still factory stock, so it doesn\u2019t match the latest Porsche BOSE or Burmester systems, but it\u2019s perfectly satisfying.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27963\" style=\"width: 1258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27963\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27963\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/395D1A0F-57A3-46ED-AD6D-2C831AE07C83.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700 blending into interior design\" width=\"1248\" height=\"832\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blends seamlessly with the interior design. Feels even more factory than factory.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/C15B7D73-AAAE-4726-BFBB-2AA8DD38A37C-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the way home, even when pressing the accelerator in Sport and Sport Plus modes, when the alternator\u2019s output and voltage rise, <strong>there was absolutely no noise.<\/strong> Zero. Bypassing the factory amplifier was definitely the right call.<\/p>\n<p>The main features of the DMH-SZ700 include:<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">CarPlay &#038; Android Auto<\/h4>\n<p>Simply connect your smartphone to the navigation unit via USB cable, and some apps from your phone become usable on the DMH-SZ700 screen.<\/p>\n<p>This allows you to display map apps like Google Maps, Yahoo! Car Navigation, Navitime, etc. Since it\u2019s your phone\u2019s navigation, the maps are always up to date.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic information is real-time from the internet, and destination search capabilities far surpass traditional navigation systems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27978\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/23D16993-5966-4554-A25E-A11F448FB743-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700 with CarPlay\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27967\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2E3980D9-8A13-4017-91D6-264FADE627ED-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700 navigation\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Best of all, you never have to worry about map updates again, and <strong>since smartphone navigation apps are frequently updated, usability keeps improving, making it very convenient.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I feel the advantages of choosing a traditional navigation system made by legacy manufacturers are diminishing year by year.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">HDMI Input Support<\/h4>\n<p>If you have an HDMI cable, you can mirror your smartphone\u2019s entire screen to the DMH-SZ700. While CarPlay and similar features only mirror compatible apps, HDMI lets you mirror your phone\u2019s home screen as well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27945\" style=\"width: 1184px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27945\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/5A3D72E8-363F-4C12-8E09-8C731BF52C0A.jpeg\" alt=\"Mirroring smartphone screen via HDMI\" width=\"1174\" height=\"880\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mirroring smartphone screen via HDMI. Playing a video.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This means you can watch Netflix movies, YouTube, or even display your browser screen.<\/p>\n<p>I personally don\u2019t use this much, but it\u2019s very handy for passengers who want to watch videos.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Built-in Browser<\/h4>\n<p>By turning on your smartphone\u2019s tethering (internet sharing) and connecting the DMH-SZ700 to Wi-Fi, you can use the built-in browser to browse websites and watch videos right on the screen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27987\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27987\" class=\"size-large wp-image-27987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/D45615F6-A05A-40B5-9286-046A9FC0366F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700 built-in browser\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Watching YouTube via the built-in browser<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You can also connect an HDMI cable, but even without it, you can watch YouTube and other videos through the browser, which is very convenient.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Alexa Built-in<\/h4>\n<p>This was one of the deciding features for me.<\/p>\n<p>Once connected to the internet, you can use voice commands like \u201c<strong>Alexa, do this<\/strong>\u201d inside the car. I often use Alexa to select music, listen to news, or tune into radio broadcasts via Radiko by voice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27975\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/20DE7CF5-304B-4192-A46E-CD2CF833DAF9-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700 settings screen\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a driving environment where your hands are busy, voice command devices like Alexa are invaluable.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Other Features<\/h4>\n<p>Of course, it also includes basic car audio functions such as AM\/FM radio (including Wide FM), Bluetooth music playback, phone functions, and can display weather forecasts and sports news on the home screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/99454FC4-6E03-4597-9B31-4E6D0976FDA6-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700 menu\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Drawbacks &#038; Concerns?<\/h4>\n<p>First, <strong>it cannot receive TV broadcasts (terrestrial digital or one-seg).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the factory navigation could receive TV, the DMH-SZ700 lacks a tuner, so it cannot display TV. Personally, I rarely watch TV even at home and mostly use internet streaming, so this isn\u2019t a drawback for me, but if you want TV, you should consider adding a separate tuner.<\/p>\n<p>Next, regarding usability, <strong>the touch sensor buttons for menu and volume are located on the left edge of the screen, close to the vehicle\u2019s frame, making them somewhat hard to operate and slow to respond.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I wish they had placed the touch sensors along the bottom of the screen for better usability.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Summary<\/h3>\n<p>Personally, I\u2019m very satisfied with the replacement. Visually, it feels even more factory than the original, with an atmosphere close to the PCM in the 718 or 991.2. The sound quality is excellent, and although I rarely listened to music inside the Boxster before, I now find myself playing music even in town.<\/p>\n<p>Having the navigation maps always up to date and being able to mirror the familiar smartphone navigation on the screen is fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond functionality, it\u2019s also great that I no longer need to attach a smartphone holder to the air vent to fix my phone in place. <strong>I\u2019m glad I switched to display audio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27959\" style=\"width: 1180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27959\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27959\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/E59FA8C9-08E2-42FD-8D06-94A9AAA5F7C4.jpeg\" alt=\"991.1 Carrera 4 GTS\" width=\"1170\" height=\"1170\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I also had the same system installed on my 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_27956\" style=\"width: 1180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27956\" class=\"wp-image-27956 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/E072C6F8-3C33-43A2-9DC0-0A029EBB9DBF.jpeg\" alt=\"DMH-SZ700 installed on 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS\" width=\"1170\" height=\"1170\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DMH-SZ700 installed on the 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I was so satisfied that right after finishing the Boxster, I immediately booked the replacement for my 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS. Just recently, that installation was completed, and <strong>both my 981 and 991.1 now enjoy a comfortable in-car infotainment environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re considering replacing your navigation system now, I recommend choosing a display audio system that supports CarPlay and Android Auto instead of a traditional legacy navigation system.
