According to period documents, <strong>only 250 units were sold domestically, with a total production of 2,398 cars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This RS, however, is a very rare \u201cTouring\u201d model equipped with comfort features like air conditioning and power windows, unlike the standard RS base model. The base RS omits rear seats, air conditioning, power steering, audio, and simplifies trims, while also fitting lightweight magnesium alloy wheels and flywheel.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the base RS is about 120 kg lighter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27569\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27569\" class=\"size-large wp-image-27569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/66CED717-7E34-47F1-8AE4-369D5D534E1E-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"964 Carrera RS Touring engine bay\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Since it\u2019s Touring, it has an air conditioning compressor like a regular Carrera<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The engine is the very same M64\/03 from the Cup car. While power is about 5 ps lower than the Cup car due to exhaust and air filter differences, it <strong>produces 260 ps, 10 ps more than the standard Carrera 2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though the numbers seem modest, the engine also benefits from unseen tuning like balancing.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ride_Comfort_and_Suspension_Impressions\"><\/span>Ride Comfort and Suspension Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I immediately got in the driver\u2019s seat and started the engine. The startup feel is not much different from the standard Carrera 2.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/70F5DA3C-CD44-492D-BEA4-419E013ADD77-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"964 Carrera RS instrument panel\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Normally, the RS Touring clutch flywheel is a dual-mass type, unlike the single-mass in the base RS. However, <strong>this particular car has been fitted with a single-mass flywheel, boasting incredible engine response.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A light blip of the throttle makes the tach needle jump wildly. Yet, despite such an engine, the car smoothly moves off even when engaging the clutch almost at idle\u2014a testament to Porsche\u2019s engine finesse.<\/p>\n<p>Once moving, the ride comfort is better than expected.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard two opinions about the 964 RS: one that it\u2019s <strong>a very harsh car to ride in<\/strong>, and another that it\u2019s <strong>fairly firm but still comfortable enough to drive normally, with better ride comfort than typical RS models.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>From my experience, I agree with the latter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27566\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/73D0EA0F-C7C6-411A-A3E3-CC88CB7B054D-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving Porsche 964 Carrera RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27560\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27560\" class=\"wp-image-27560 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/C88F79E5-BFAC-4369-940C-EB72572AB74E-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Fuchs wheels on Porsche 964 Carrera RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The RS originally comes with magnesium wheels, but the owner keeps those stored and uses Fuchs wheels instead.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Though this is an RS Touring, it shares the same suspension as the base RS, and recently <strong>this car underwent a full suspension refresh with genuine parts, so the ride is close to brand-new condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I suspect the harsh ride opinions come from experiences with modified cars or those with some suspension wear.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/050F37B4-BA16-4916-9074-35D589E70397-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Cornering in Porsche 964 Carrera RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Handling_and_Power_Feel\"><\/span>Handling and Power Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Entering corners, the front end naturally feels sharper and grip and stability are clearly improved over the Carrera 2. However, <strong>there\u2019s hardly any harshness or difficulty in handling the suspension.<\/strong> The car leans just slightly, making it easy to feel the load and very reassuring.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the \u201973 Carrera RS or modern GT3s I\u2019ve driven, this one feels milder in character.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/E8C58419-D28C-4204-A83A-AB60BFA1AED6-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Shift lever of Porsche 964 Carrera RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, <strong>the shift lever is about 28 mm longer than the standard Carrera\u2019s,<\/strong> using the same components as the Cup car. The shifting feel is more positive and very satisfying.<\/p>\n<p>However, the engine\u2019s razor-sharp response makes rev-matching on downshifts a bit tricky until you get used to it. If you blip the throttle as usual, the revs shoot up quickly and don\u2019t match.<\/p>\n<p>After a few tries, I got the hang of rev-matching, and when flooring the throttle on straights, the power is clearly stronger than the Carrera.<\/p>\n<p>To me, the 10 ps difference doesn\u2019t feel accurate. Of course, weight plays a role, but <strong>it feels more like an engine with 30 ps more than the standard Carrera.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/89CF9EEB-2682-4C64-8F66-9CB824060190-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving Porsche 964 Carrera RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a thrilling air-cooled soundtrack, it powers through uphill corners and remains stable on straights. Even on rough, undulating roads, the steering isn\u2019t overly affected, which is impressive for a suspension lowered by 40 mm compared to stock.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Close_to_the_Positioning_of_GTS_or_Spider\"><\/span>Close to the Positioning of GTS or Spider?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The 964 Carrera RS is a very versatile car.<\/strong> Given the RS badge, I expected a race-car-like harshness, but it\u2019s not that extreme.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s clearly more athletic than the Carrera 2. It feels somewhat like today\u2019s GTS, Spider, or GT4 models.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/7200DE3B-DF94-41EC-96AB-5BBB0F0A7D57-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 964 Carrera RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/0EF32FC9-01DB-4F72-AB61-32174D0262D5-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 964 Carrera RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fact that this RS is the \u201c<strong>Touring<\/strong>\u201d version is a big reason for that impression.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, prices have soared, and it\u2019s no longer a car you can easily take on a casual touring trip.
