1) The Journey to Purchase<\/h3>\n

I’ve loved cars since I was a child. Let me start by explaining “why I became a car enthusiast,” “my car history,” and “why I decided to purchase the Boxster.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why I Became a Car Enthusiast<\/h4>\n

When I was in 3rd or 4th grade, the supercar boom was in full swing. It was then that I started to think, “Supercars are amazing and cool,”<\/strong> and my interest in cars began to grow.<\/p>\n

Additionally, in the manga “Circuit no \u014ckami<\/a>” that was popular at the time, the protagonist’s main rival drove a Porsche. I thought, “Driving a Lamborghini or Ferrari in the city seems difficult, but a Porsche seems feasible for everyday use.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

One day, my uncle promised to take me to a supercar show in Kansai, and I was looking forward to it for months. However, on the day of the event, I came down with a high fever. I insisted on going, but my uncle and parents stopped me, and I couldn’t go. This incident only intensified my passion for cars.<\/p>\n

After that, I started building car models and entering them in contests, and I participated in Tamiya’s RC car races (RC Car Grand Prix)<\/span>. During my middle and high school years, although I played sports in clubs, I secretly preferred tinkering with models and RC cars in my room, making me a “hidden otaku boy.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

My Car History<\/h4>\n

As I grew older, I became fond of sports cars like the Honda CR-X and Nissan Silvia, but imported cars were not on my radar at all.<\/p>\n

The first car I bought just before becoming a working adult was a “Mazda Familia GTX with a manual transmission.”<\/strong> It was the base vehicle for the WRC (FIA World Rally Championship)<\/span>, and its electronically controlled four-wheel drive that adjusted torque distribution made it a very fun car to drive.<\/p>\n

After starting my career, I was assigned to sales and met with various company presidents, all of whom drove impressive cars. Seeing this, my desire to “someday drive a car like that”<\/strong> grew stronger.<\/p>\n

After getting married, I purchased a Jeep Cherokee,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

and later switched to a BMW 323i M Sport. I decided to buy a BMW after hearing from a company president I met during sales,<\/p>\n

“German cars are well-engineered for highway stability and performance. Someday, I will drive a BMW.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Around that time, the thought of “someday owning a Porsche, someday a 911”<\/strong> began to take root, but at the time, I thought “Porsche is a dream beyond reach… a car I can’t afford.”<\/strong> I believed it would be a long time before I could drive one.<\/p>\n

Later, in addition to the BMW, I purchased a “Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTEC AMG Sport Package” for the family. By then, I had already decided that the next car I would buy would be a Porsche, and I wanted to experience a car that was the complete opposite of a Porsche before making that purchase.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

However, while the ML was an excellent car, it wasn’t particularly fun to drive. It was stable, packed with safety features, and comfortable, but driving it made me incredibly sleepy. Every time I used the autonomous driving feature, I felt a sense of crisis,<\/p>\n

“I used to drive a manual car, and now I’m relying on autonomous driving… I’m going to lose my edge!”<\/p>\n

to the point where it was almost comical.<\/p>\n

Why I Decided to Purchase the Boxster<\/h4>\n

The moment I seriously considered buying a Porsche was about two years ago when I had the chance to ride in the passenger seat of a friend’s 981 Boxster.<\/strong> The most memorable aspect was the sound of the naturally aspirated flat-six engine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recent cars often don’t rev to high RPMs and tend to be eco-focused, but the sound of the Boxster’s engine when it revved to high RPMs was so exhilarating that it made my heart race with excitement.<\/p>\n

“It’s childish for a grown man to get excited in the passenger seat,” I thought, trying to maintain a calm demeanor, but inside I was shouting, “This is amazing! I want it!”<\/p>\n

Later, when the BMW’s inspection was due, and with the kids becoming more independent and family outings becoming less frequent, we decided to replace the BMW with a kei car that my wife, who was a paper driver, could easily handle. Modern kei cars have spacious interiors and are perfectly adequate for driving. So, I declared, “Then I’ll replace the ML and get a two-seater!”<\/strong> However, my wife wasn’t thrilled, asking, “Why a two-seater for a family of four?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

At that time, my son, who had returned from studying abroad, told my wife when I wasn’t around,<\/p>\n

“If something happens to Dad and he passes away without buying the Porsche he’s always wanted, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. Let him buy the car he loves.”<\/p>\n

Hearing this from our son, my wife, who had always insisted, “We need a four-seater until the kids are working adults. It’s too early for a two-seater,” finally agreed, and we proceeded with the purchase.<\/p>\n

I decided to test drive various cars, including the “Jaguar F-Type,” “Lotus Elise,” “Alfa Romeo 4C,” “Mazda Roadster RF,” “718 Boxster,” and “981 Boxster.” However, I couldn’t forget the “sound” of the naturally aspirated flat-six engine and began searching for a used 981.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2) Options Prioritized When Searching for a Used Car<\/h3>\n

The options and specifications I considered essential were:<\/p>\n

However, after about five months of scouring used car sites daily, I couldn’t find a single 981 that met these criteria. Manual transmission cars are indeed rare. So, I expanded my options to include PDK, and suddenly, I had plenty of choices…<\/strong><\/p>\n

I considered the GTS, but even used, the price was almost the same as a new car, which seemed a bit wasteful. Among my options, I found the “Boxster Black Edition (2700cc)”<\/strong> with many options and a reasonable price.<\/p>\n

When I saw this Boxster Black Edition, it struck a chord with me. I had always associated the Boxster with a white body color, but I thought, “Black might be cool too.” Additionally, the “Jet Black Metallic” body color was beautiful, sometimes appearing purple or blue, unlike regular black,<\/strong> so I immediately went to see it at a used car dealership in Yokohama.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When I visited the dealership, the staff were very accommodating, and they assured me that they would “transfer the Porsche new car warranty before delivery,”<\/strong> so I placed a provisional hold and decided to purchase it a week later.<\/p>\n

3) The Process Leading to Delivery<\/h3>\n

The process leading to delivery was as follows:<\/p>\n

\u30fbJune 21: Viewed the car in Yokohama and placed a provisional hold (for one week)
\n(That evening, I received advice from a friend who owns a Boxster and inquired again about stock cars at the Porsche Center in Kansai, but there were no cars that met my criteria)<\/span>
\n\u30fbJune 27: Placed a formal order
\n\u30fbJuly 12: Delivery (pickup)<\/p>\n

On the day of delivery, I went to Yokohama to pick up the car. The staff opened the Boxster’s roof, turned on the sport exhaust, and started the engine. The sound was so amazing that I thought, “This staff member really gets it” (laughs).<\/p>\n

After delivery, I took the opportunity to drive along the Hakone Turnpike and surrounding roads on the way home, and I was genuinely thrilled.<\/p>\n

“I’ve finally bought the Porsche of my dreams!”<\/strong> I remember driving with a sense of disbelief and exhilaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4) Porsche’s Performance as an Owner<\/h3>\n

After about three months of ownership, here are my thoughts on the Porsche’s performance.<\/p>\n

\u2460 Engine<\/h4>\n

The naturally aspirated 2700cc engine provides just the right amount of power. It’s not extremely fast, but it allows for a satisfying rev to high RPMs. The precise feeling and exhilarating “sound” at high RPMs are simply irresistible (laughs).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2461 PDK<\/h4>\n

Initially, I wanted a manual transmission, so I wondered if PDK would be boring, but that was not the case at all. The gear change response is lightning-fast and excellent.<\/strong> Additionally, when you turn on Sport Plus, the connection between the engine and transmission becomes even more direct, giving it a racing car-like feel.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2462 Fuel Efficiency<\/h4>\n

I’ve rarely paid attention to fuel efficiency, but it’s around 10km\/L to 11km\/L. However, with a Porsche or Boxster, worrying about fuel efficiency is a waste. Enjoying the drive without worrying about fuel efficiency is the key to experiencing the joy of a Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2463 Ride Comfort and Handling<\/h4>\n

In PASM Normal mode, the ride is so smooth and flat that it feels like a luxury sedan. When you switch to PASM Sport, the suspension becomes slightly firmer, but not harsh, making it just right for me.<\/p>\n

The steering responds precisely to your input, and the acceleration is directly proportional to how much you press the pedal. Everything feels natural, so even after long drives, I don’t feel tired at all. This is the first car I’ve experienced like this.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2464 Convertible Top<\/h4>\n

At first glance, I was a bit worried about the convertible top being fabric and whether it would leak in the rain. (Of course, it doesn’t leak, but it’s just an impression, haha)<\/span> I also wondered how to clean it if it got dirty, whether washing it would be a hassle, and how much it would cost to replace if it aged.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When I asked the dealership about these concerns, they said, “You don’t need to be overly cautious; just wash it normally.”<\/strong> And indeed, that was the case. Once the top is closed, it’s no different from a regular car.<\/p>\n

\u2465 Family’s Reaction<\/h4>\n

The first thing my two children said was, “Wow, the roof opens? That’s awesome! It sounds great!”<\/strong> My wife commented, “The sound is so loud. It’s going to disturb the neighbors. Are you having a midlife crisis?”<\/strong> (laughs). She also remarked, “If you open the roof in the city, your nostrils will turn black from exhaust fumes,” but on the other hand, she was pleased, saying, “There are two trunks, front and back. They’re bigger than I thought, and they can hold luggage.”<\/p>\n

“Well, as long as Dad is happy, it’s good that we bought it,”<\/strong> so overall, it seems to have left a positive impression.<\/p>\n

\u2466 Favorite Points<\/h4>\n

The “sound” is my favorite aspect.<\/strong> When you turn on Sport Plus and the sport exhaust, rev the engine to high RPMs, and shift up with the paddles, the “whoosh” sound is fantastic. I think this is unique to PDK, and I often drive with the top down just to hear that sound (laughs).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This might be something you can only experience with the naturally aspirated 2700cc engine. Before purchasing, I thought the power might be a bit lacking, but now I think 2700cc is just right.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the car had more power, the speed would increase too quickly, and I wouldn’t be able to press the accelerator as much. Now, except when driving around my home, I drive with Sport Plus on, paddle shifting, and the top open.<\/p>\n

5) Porsche Track Experience<\/h3>\n

In September, I participated in the beginner course (Warm Up) of the Porsche Track Experience<\/a> held at Fuji Speedway. Initially, I thought, “It’s a beginner’s course, so it should be easy. I’ll take it as a review of my driving skills,”<\/strong> but it turned out to be quite intense. It was a full day from 8 AM to 4 PM. Although I was exhausted afterward, I’m really glad I participated.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Changed My Driving Style<\/h4>\n

The reason it was beneficial is that it “changed my everyday driving style.”<\/strong> By learning the correct driving position, steering techniques, and braking, I feel like my entire approach to driving has transformed.<\/p>\n

Unleashing Porsche’s Performance<\/h4>\n

The second point is that I feel like I can “unleash Porsche’s performance more than before (or so it feels… haha)<\/span>.”<\/strong> Previously, I was cautious on public roads, but by experiencing full braking and driving on wet surfaces, which you can’t do on public roads, I got a sense of Porsche’s limits. This allowed me to understand, “This is the limit, so I can safely go this far,”<\/strong> resulting in more confident and enjoyable driving.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

There were about three women participating, and although their driving was initially unsteady, by the end, they had improved remarkably. I think Mina should definitely participate too!<\/p>\n

6) Options I Want for Future Purchases<\/h3>\n

When buying a Porsche in the future, the must-have options are as follows:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Sport Chrono Package
\n\u2461 PASM
\n\u2462 Sport Exhaust<\/p>\n

\u2460 The Sport Chrono Package enhances the PDK’s directness with the addition of Sport Plus mode, and the engine characteristics become more powerful, so having this option allows Porsche’s performance to be fully realized.<\/strong> Additionally, the stopwatch (clock) on the dashboard adds to the aesthetics, and without it, it feels a bit lacking (not very Porsche-like)<\/span>, which is another reason for choosing it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2461 Regarding PASM, when I test-drove a Boxster without PASM, I felt the suspension was a bit too soft on mountain roads, and conversely, it felt a bit stiff on bumpy roads. Therefore, I definitely want PASM, which allows for suspension adjustment based on the situation.<\/p>\n

\u2462 And the Sport Exhaust. The “sound” is everything.<\/strong> While the sound quality changes with Sport Plus ON, adding this option enhances the “crackling” sound during downshifts and the “whoosh” sound during upshifts. Although it can be added later, it’s quite expensive, so it’s an option I’d like to have from the start.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Next, if budget allows, I’d like to add:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Carbon Full Bucket Seats
\n\u2461 PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes)<\/p>\n

\u2460 Regarding the Carbon Full Bucket Seats, I had the opportunity to sit in them during the Porsche Track Experience, and they felt incredibly comfortable. The way they hug your shoulders and waist from the inside is sporty and appealing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2461 As for PCCB, even without this option, Porsche’s brakes are more than sufficient, but when driving at Fuji Speedway, I felt, “PCCB would be even better!” Previously, I thought spending so much money on brakes was a bit crazy… (laughs) But once you experience them, you definitely want those brakes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If I buy another Porsche in the future, I’d like it to be a bit more performance-oriented and sporty than my current one.<\/p>\n

7) Areas of Concern<\/h3>\n

There aren’t any major concerns, but if I had to nitpick, here are five points I’ve noticed.<\/p>\n

\u2460 Rainwater on Heavy Rain Days<\/h4>\n

After parking the car on a day with heavy rain, when I open the side window, rainwater drips inside from where the windshield and convertible top meet. On the flip side, it shows that drainage is well-managed, and rainwater entering the car is common in most vehicles, so I’m not too concerned… haha. Still, I always keep a towel in the car.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Stone Noise Inside the Wheels<\/h4>\n

When driving on roads with many small stones, you can hear stones bouncing inside the wheels. I suspect it’s because there’s no soundproofing material inside the wheel wells, but on the other hand, it helps me understand the road conditions better.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2462 Struggling to Retrieve Parking Tickets<\/h4>\n

The Boxster’s low ride height means I have to stretch to reach the parking ticket dispenser. On the bright side, it motivates me to stay fit and agile to continue driving the Boxster (laughs).<\/p>\n

\u2463 Avoid Placing Cold Items in the Rear Trunk<\/h4>\n

A minor detail, but since it’s a mid-engine car, placing cold items in the rear trunk causes them to warm up (laughs). It’s not a major concern, though.<\/p>\n

\u2464 Difficulty Installing a Rear Dashcam<\/h4>\n

For those who want to record rearview footage in case of an accident, installing a rear dashcam in the Boxster is challenging because it’s a convertible, and you can’t attach it to the rear window.<\/p>\n

I have both front and rear dashcams installed inside the front windshield, but if you want dashcams for both front and rear, it’s something to consider in advance.<\/p>\n

\u2465 Flimsy Cup Holders (Wife’s Opinion)<\/h4>\n

This is my wife’s opinion:<\/p>\n

“I won’t complain about the seat not reclining, but there’s one thing I can’t tolerate… the cup holders are too flimsy (flimsy: a Kansai dialect term for something that seems easily breakable).<\/span> Every time I place something in them, I’m worried they’ll break. For such an expensive car, they should have more durable, lightweight, and sturdy cup holders. It would definitely improve customer satisfaction!”<\/p>\n

It seems to be a point of concern for women in the passenger seat.<\/p>\n

8) Overall Impression<\/h3>\n

What Kind of Car is the Boxster?<\/h4>\n

The Boxster is a car with dual personalities, making it incredibly fun.<\/strong> In normal mode, it drives as comfortably as a luxury sedan, but when you turn on Sport Plus, it transforms into a completely different sports car.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

With the ability to open and close the roof, you can enjoy various driving experiences depending on the situation. It’s not just dual personalities; it’s a car that can transform in many ways, making it a great value.<\/p>\n

I’ve driven cars with sharp handling, extremely fast cars, and cars with high braking performance, but often, when one aspect is outstanding, you have to compromise on other points.<\/p>\n

In contrast, with the Boxster, I feel that handling, braking, engine, and stability are all balanced and unified. “Driving,” “turning,” and “stopping” have never been so effortlessly controllable in any other car I’ve experienced.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What Car Do You Want to Drive Next?<\/h4>\n

Interestingly, once you drive a Porsche, you want to drive another Porsche (laughs). I finally understand why so many people get hooked on Porsche. I definitely want to drive a 911 next, and I hope to conclude my car journey with a GT3.<\/p>\n

9) What Does Porsche Mean to You?<\/h3>\n

To me, Porsche is,<\/p>\n

a source of excitement and thrill in life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since purchasing the Boxster, I’ve started visiting places I never considered going by car before (the Sea of Japan, Shikoku, circuits, etc.)<\/span>, and I’ve met more people. It’s truly added color and excitement to my life.<\/p>\n

…or rather, just sitting in the seat and starting the engine gets me excited (laughs).<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m filled with gratitude for the Boxster owner friend who encouraged me to buy a Porsche and for my wife and son.<\/p>\n
