Hello everyone! I’m Mina, the administrator of the blog “Welcome Home, PORSCHE.” Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Nakabayashi Kogyo<\/a>, a long-established manufacturer of body covers, to have a custom body cover made for my Panamera. Thanks to their generosity, I was allowed to document the entire process from measurement to creation, and I’m excited to share that experience with you.<\/p>\n

1. What is Bringing in Your Car for Measurement?<\/h3>\n

Free Body Cover Gift!<\/h4>\n

Previously, we ordered body covers from Nakabayashi Kogyo for our Porsche 981 Boxster GTS and Mercedes-Benz SL500 (R129), and even my husband, who is usually quite critical, was full of praise<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Let’s order a body cover for the Panamera too!”<\/p>\n

However, when I contacted them, I was informed that they didn’t have a pattern for the new model after the full model change.<\/p>\n

Nakabayashi Kogyo currently has patterns for about 3,000 types of body covers, but naturally, there are some models they don’t have patterns for. If you bring in a relatively new model after a full model change or a model they are interested in, they will give you the first body cover for free as a token of appreciation for your cooperation in the measurement process. (If you don’t need the body cover, you can receive a VJA gift card worth 10,000 yen on the day of completion.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, photos of the car and the cover after installation will be published later on the “Minkara” blog as part of Nakabayashi Kogyo’s production diary.<\/p>\n

The offer of a “free first body cover” was too tempting to resist, so I gladly decided to bring in my car.<\/p>\n

Three Courses for Bringing in Your Car<\/h4>\n

When bringing in your car, you need to choose one of the following three courses:<\/p>\n

\u2460 One-Day Completion Course<\/strong>
\nBring your car in at 9 AM on a weekday and have the work completed in one day. Recommended for those coming from afar.
\n\u2461 Multiple Visits Course<\/strong>
\nBring your car in for about 40 minutes per visit, 3 to 5 times, or more (the average is 4 times) until the pattern is completed. Recommended for those who find it difficult to leave their car for a whole day or live nearby.
\n\u2462 Overnight Course<\/strong>
\nLeave your car for over 24 hours and pick it up the next day (or the day after). This course is most recommended as it allows Nakabayashi Kogyo to take ample time to aim for a perfect pattern.<\/p>\n

I chose the \u2462 “Overnight Course.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

When bringing in your car, you are responsible for the round-trip gasoline and transportation costs to Nakabayashi Kogyo, but they will provide a loaner car while your car is with them. (Nakabayashi Kogyo covers the gasoline costs for the loaner car.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Go Through the Trouble of Bringing in Your Car?<\/h4>\n

Initially, I was surprised at the idea of bringing in my car. Bringing in your car involves coordinating schedules, arranging a loaner car, the time required for sample creation, and securing the necessary personnel, which is a hassle for both the car owner and Nakabayashi Kogyo.<\/p>\n

Moreover, leaving your car overnight carries risks, albeit minimal, of “scratches” or “theft.”<\/p>\n

Even though our Panamera is a new model after a full model change, the size and design aren’t drastically different from the previous model. So, I honestly thought, “Can’t they just base it on the previous model’s pattern and verify the car’s size with the manufacturer’s catalog?”<\/p>\n

When I asked President Nakagawa about this, he responded:<\/p>\n

“Indeed, measuring by bringing in the actual car is a hassle. However, the most important role of a body cover is to ‘protect the car.’ To achieve this, we believe it’s necessary to create the body cover carefully with our unique methods and senses, rather than relying on data calculated from the manufacturer’s catalog values. All the patterns we have now are based on actual cars, and conversely, we can’t create a cover for a car unless we meet it in person.”<\/p>\n

I see… This is the pride of a manufacturing company.<\/p>\n

However, due to the popularity of bringing in cars for body cover measurement, they have temporarily halted accepting new requests. They plan to resume in the new year.<\/p>\n

2. On the Day of Measurement<\/h3>\n

Heading to Nakabayashi Kogyo in the Morning<\/h4>\n

So, on the morning of the day, I headed to Nakabayashi Kogyo with my Panamera. The weather forecast was sunny all day. I was relieved because if it rained on the way, it would have been a hassle to wipe off the rainwater upon arrival.<\/p>\n

Nakabayashi Kogyo’s office and factory are located about 3 minutes from the Habikino Interchange on the Minami-Hanna Road. I arrived without any trouble and, upon entering, saw many boxes of body covers waiting to be shipped.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Due to the impact of a large typhoon in September this year, there was a surge in orders for body covers, and they couldn’t keep up with the shipments. (By the time this article is published, things should have settled down.)<\/span><\/p>\n

After greeting Mr. Nakagawa and the staff, I was handed three documents.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The first document was titled “To Customers Visiting for Measurement,” detailing precautions for bringing in your car, estimated time required for measurement and creation, and more.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

On the back, there was even tourist information for those on the one-day completion course! How thoughtful (laughs)!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The second document was a consent form.<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Nakagawa, “Initially, we didn’t have a consent form, but we were advised to prepare one just in case.”<\/strong> The consent form included:<\/p>\n

\u30fbAlthough we will try not to touch the car’s body as much as possible during measurement, there may be some contact.
\n\u30fbThe measurement process and the completed cover will be photographed and published on the “Minkara” blog.
\n\u30fbIf there are any pre-existing scratches on the car, please confirm and report them in advance.
\n\u30fbIf the work is extended, we will contact you in advance.<\/p>\n

The third document was an application form for a loaner car, provided only to those who need one.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Measurement<\/h4>\n

After reviewing and signing the documents, the measurement began. Several sheets were prepared to record the detailed dimensions of the car.<\/p>\n

Following these sheets, two staff members measured the car while Mr. Nakagawa recorded the numbers. Both Mr. Nakagawa and the staff were in serious mode, so I quietly observed without interrupting.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I was amazed by the meticulousness of the measurement points. “Wow, they measure even that part!?”<\/strong> They measure over 30 to 40 points in total.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

However, since everyone was experienced and worked in perfect harmony, the measurement process itself was completed in about 5 minutes.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Sample Creation (First Attempt)<\/h4>\n

After the measurement, the first sample creation began. Normally, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes for cutting and 30 minutes for sewing, totaling about an hour and a half. However, since I was documenting the entire process, they had prepared a sample of the 970 Panamera (previous model)<\/span> in advance. (The fabric was wrinkled as it was a previously made and stored sample, but the actual fabric is much nicer.)<\/span><\/p>\n

When the sample body cover was placed on the car…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This is how it looked.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 3: Marking<\/h4>\n

Mr. Nakagawa carefully checked the tension and wrinkles of the covered body cover.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

To my untrained eye, the 970 pattern seemed to fit perfectly, so I said, “This looks fine to me…” Mr. Nakagawa replied, “No, it doesn’t fit at all.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“For example, there’s a sag here. If rainwater or dust accumulates here, the weight can cause the fabric to deteriorate, leading to damage to your car.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

“Also, the bonnet and rear areas are a bit tight. If we don’t allow a little more room here, it will put stress on the car. And it seems the mirror position is slightly different between the old and new models. We need to adjust that too.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Although I wasn’t bothered by it at all, it seemed that this stage was still far from Mr. Nakagawa’s goal.<\/p>\n

After that, they marked the areas that needed adjustments with notes like “cut this part by this much.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This marking is minimal, so it doesn’t affect the car body at all. After completing all the checks, they removed the body cover from the car.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Sample Creation (Second Attempt)<\/h4>\n

Next, they completely unraveled the seams of the body cover. “What!? You’re unraveling everything!?” I exclaimed, to which Mr. Nakagawa replied, “Yes, we unravel everything and make the necessary adjustments based on the markings.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Following the notes like “cut this much,” they cut and adjusted the fabric, then spent another 30 minutes sewing it.<\/p>\n

They then covered the car again, checked, marked, unraveled, adjusted, and sewed… This process is usually repeated 2 to 3 times. It takes quite a bit of time for these adjustments.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Some patterns fit perfectly on the first try, but that’s rare.<\/p>\n

The final decision of “Yes, this is it! Let’s go with this!”<\/strong> is made by President Nakagawa, but:<\/p>\n

“Even if the dimensions are correct and everyone says it’s good enough, if it doesn’t feel right to me, I’ll redo it as many times as necessary until it does.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Amazing…<\/p>\n

However, Porsche patterns are relatively easy to finalize. As I wrote in a previous interview article<\/a>, Porsche’s design is natural and without strain, so it doesn’t require major adjustments. On the other hand, unique designs like supercars are very challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2192\u3010Next Page\u3011The Perfect Body Cover is Finally Complete the Next Day!!<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/p>\n

3. Leaving the Car for a Day and Completion the Next Day<\/h3>\n

End of Day 1!<\/h4>\n

Since I had to pick up my daughter from kindergarten, I ended my visit for the day and headed home. However, if time allowed, I honestly wanted to observe more of the process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I was amazed to learn how meticulously the body cover to protect my beloved car was made, and I wanted to see how it would progress to completion.<\/p>\n

When I conveyed this to Mr. Nakagawa, he said:<\/p>\n

“Yes, the initial measurement takes about 5 minutes, so some customers want to watch for a while longer afterward. They often express surprise with ‘Wow!’ and ‘I see!’ but we’re just proceeding with our usual process, so I’m not quite sure what surprises them so much… (laughs)”<\/p>\n

He added, “We’re about to start the remake, so tomorrow you’ll see a beautifully fitted body cover. Please look forward to it.” When I offered to hand over the Panamera’s keys, he said:<\/p>\n

“Oh, you can take the keys with you.”<\/p>\n

“Really? Isn’t it customary to leave the car keys in such situations?” I asked, to which he replied:<\/p>\n

“Since there are times when contractors and external people come and go, we don’t keep the keys to prevent any unforeseen incidents. Some customers worry that ‘the alarm might go off if the locked car is shaken,’ but we assure them that we won’t move the car at all, so it’s fine.”<\/p>\n

I felt that their attention to detail in handling cars exceeded that of the owners themselves. This level of care is reflected in their body cover creation. (Just don’t forget to bring the car keys the next day, though! (laughs)<\/span><\/p>\n

So, I drove home in the loaner Daihatsu Move, and the next morning at 11 AM, I headed back to Nakabayashi Kogyo, excited to see what had been created.<\/p>\n

Finally Completed!<\/h4>\n

I parked the loaner car in the parking space in front of Nakabayashi Kogyo, opened the door slowly, and…<\/p>\n

“Wow, it’s completed!!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, the slight tension and sag present in the sample from the previous day were gone, and the fit had improved.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the previous day’s sample, the wheel area was quite visible, but the completed product covered it well.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Here’s a comparison between the first day’s sample (970 pattern) and the completed product.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

To the average person, including myself, the difference might not be noticeable, but Mr. Nakagawa sees it as completely different. Upon closer inspection, the “before” looks a bit tight around the bonnet and bumper, but the “after” has improved in those areas, making the Panamera look more comfortable (laughs).<\/p>\n

Additionally, the mirror area is designed with some leeway so that even if the mirrors are accidentally left open when the body cover is put on, it won’t cause any stress.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sometimes, customers request a tighter fit because they think a snug body cover looks cooler, but Nakabayashi Kogyo, which prioritizes “protecting the car” and functionality, politely declines such requests.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Afterward, I thought I would take this body cover home, but actually…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

They will recreate it with the chosen fabric type (I opted for the one with fleece!)<\/span> and options like fasteners, and send the completed first cover to my home later.<\/strong> (Worth 52,600 yen)<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s very generous!<\/p>\n

If You Want to Protect Your Beloved Car<\/h4>\n

As mentioned earlier, we already use Nakabayashi Kogyo’s body covers at home, and my husband says:<\/p>\n

“Since we started using Nakabayashi Kogyo’s body cover, the car doesn’t get dirty at all. Even during storms like this year’s typhoon, it hasn’t come off, and it’s easy to put on and take off, lightweight, and durable.<\/strong> The frequency of car washes has decreased to one-fifth or one-tenth.<\/strong> I was initially worried about the thin fleece, but there haven’t been any noticeable scratches. It’s well thought out. The cover gets dirty, but without it, all that dirt and dust would be on the car body, and the thought of washing it every time is terrifying. Basically, it’s best not to wash the car. After all, washing is what causes the most scratches.”<\/p>\n

Initially, I thought, “Wow, a car body cover costs 40,000 to 50,000 yen! That’s expensive!” But considering the meticulous craftsmanship and the fact that each cover is handmade, 30,000 to 60,000 yen seems… almost too cheap.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After all, a Porsche option that simply embosses the Porsche crest on the front and rear headrests costs 74,000 yen… (laughs)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I couldn’t help but ask Mr. Nakagawa, “Isn’t it too cheap? Maybe you should consider raising the price a bit…”<\/p>\n

“We pride ourselves on offering high cost-effectiveness with this quality at this price range. In fact, we haven’t changed the price in five years… However, some people still say it’s expensive. That’s why we want to clearly communicate our process and philosophy so that customers can understand and be satisfied with the price.”<\/p>\n

Currently, Nakabayashi Kogyo, a long-established body cover manufacturer, is experiencing a surge in orders and popularity for bringing in cars, with a waiting period of several months. After observing their meticulous process, I understand why they are so popular.<\/p>\n
