Hello, everyone! I\u2019m Mina, the writer behind the \u201cWelcome Home, PORSCHE\u201d blog. The other day, I took our Panamera to Nakabayashi Kogyo, a long-established car cover manufacturer that I\u2019d interviewed previously<\/a>, to have a custom cover made. This time, I was given special permission to photograph the process, from measuring the car to making the cover, so I\u2019d love to show you how it all went.<\/p>\n

1. What Does It Mean to Bring Your Car in for a Custom Fit?<\/h3>\n

A Free Car Cover as a Thank-You!<\/h4>\n

We\u2019d previously ordered Nakabayashi Kogyo covers for our Porsche 981 Boxster GTS and Mercedes-Benz SL500 (R129). My husband, who tends to be a tough critic, couldn\u2019t praise them enough<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s order a cover for the Panamera, too!\u201d<\/p>\n

But when I got in touch, I learned they didn\u2019t yet have a pattern for it, since it was a new model introduced after a full redesign.<\/p>\n

Nakabayashi Kogyo has patterns for around 3,000 different cars, but naturally, not every model is covered. If you bring in a relatively new car that\u2019s had a full redesign\u2014or a model the company is looking to add to its range\u2014they\u2019ll give you the first cover made from the new pattern for free as a thank-you for helping with the measurements. (If you\u2019d rather not receive the cover, you can instead get a \u00a510,000 VJA gift card on the day the pattern is completed.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Photos of your car and the finished cover will also be featured later in the company\u2019s production diary on Minkara<\/a>, a Japanese car enthusiast community.<\/p>\n

A free, first-off-the-line car cover<\/strong> sounded like a fantastic deal, so I was happy to bring our Panamera in.<\/p>\n

Three Options for Bringing in Your Car<\/h4>\n

There are three options to choose from when bringing your car in for measurements.<\/p>\n

\u2460 Same-Day Service<\/strong>
\nBring your car in at 9 a.m. on a weekday, and the work is completed that day. Recommended for customers traveling from farther away.
\n\u2461 Multiple Short Visits<\/strong>
\nBring your car in for around 40 minutes per visit, typically three to five times (four visits on average), until the pattern is complete. Recommended for local customers or anyone who can\u2019t leave their car for a full day.
\n\u2462 Overnight Drop-Off<\/strong>
\nLeave your car for at least 24 hours, then pick it up the following day or the day after. Nakabayashi Kogyo says this is the option it recommends most, as it gives them plenty of time to work toward the best possible fit.<\/p>\n

I chose \u2462, the \u201cOvernight Drop-Off\u201d option.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You cover the cost of fuel and travel to and from Nakabayashi Kogyo, but they can lend you a courtesy car while yours is in their care. (Nakabayashi Kogyo covers the fuel costs for the courtesy car.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Go to the Trouble of Bringing Your Car in?<\/h4>\n

To be honest, my first reaction was, \u201cYou really have to bring the car all the way in?\u201d The process involves a lot of work for both the owner and Nakabayashi Kogyo: coordinating schedules, arranging a courtesy car, making a sample cover, and ensuring staff are available to do the work.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also no way to completely eliminate the risks of scratches or theft while a car is left overnight, however carefully it\u2019s handled.<\/p>\n

And while our Panamera was a new model after a full redesign, its size and styling weren\u2019t dramatically different from the previous generation. I couldn\u2019t help wondering: \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be enough to start with the previous model\u2019s pattern and adjust it using the dimensions in the manufacturer\u2019s catalog?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I asked company president Nakagawa about that, and here\u2019s what he told me:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s true that bringing a car in for measurements takes time and effort. But the most important job of a car cover is to protect the car<\/strong>. That\u2019s why we believe we need to work directly with the actual car, using our own methods and experience, rather than making a cover based on measurements calculated from catalog specifications. Every pattern we have is based on a real car. In other words, we can\u2019t make a cover for a car unless we\u2019ve had the chance to work with one in person.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

I see\u2026 That\u2019s the pride of a company devoted to craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

That said, the in-person measurement service is very popular, so Nakabayashi Kogyo has temporarily stopped accepting bookings. They expect to resume after the New Year.<\/p>\n

2. Measurement Day<\/h3>\n

Heading to Nakabayashi Kogyo in the Morning<\/h4>\n

The big day had arrived, and I drove the Panamera to Nakabayashi Kogyo. The forecast called for sunshine all day. I\u2019d been worried that if it rained on the way there, they\u2019d have to dry the car off before getting started, so I was relieved to see the sun.<\/p>\n

Nakabayashi Kogyo\u2019s office and workshop are about a three-minute drive from the Habikino Interchange on the Minami-Hanna Road. We found the place without any trouble. Inside, I saw stacks of boxes filled with car covers waiting to be shipped.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Apparently, orders had surged after the powerful typhoon that hit in September, and the company was struggling to keep up with shipments. (By the time this article is published, the backlog should have eased.)<\/span><\/p>\n

After greeting Nakagawa and the staff, I was handed three documents.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The first was titled \u201cFor Customers Bringing Their Cars in for Measurements.\u201d It covered important points to keep in mind, along with estimated times for measuring the car and making the cover.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The back even had sightseeing suggestions for customers opting for same-day service. How thoughtful! (Laughs.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The second document was a consent form.<\/p>\n

Nakagawa explained, \u201cWe didn\u2019t originally have a consent form, but people around us advised that we should prepare one, so we made it just in case.\u201d<\/strong> It covered points including:<\/p>\n

\u30fbMeasurements are taken while avoiding contact with the car\u2019s body as much as possible, though some contact may be necessary.
\n\u30fbPhotos of the measuring process and finished cover may be posted later on the company\u2019s Minkara blog.
\n\u30fbIf the car already has any damage, customers should point it out beforehand.
\n\u30fbCustomers will be notified in advance if the work takes longer than expected.<\/p>\n

The third document was an application form for a courtesy car, which was given only to customers who needed one.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Taking Measurements<\/h4>\n

After reviewing and signing the paperwork, the measuring began. Nakabayashi Kogyo had several sheets listing the many measurements to be taken.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Two staff members measured the car while Nakagawa recorded the numbers. They were both completely focused, so I kept quiet and watched.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

What surprised me most was just how thorough they were. They took measurements at more than 30 to 40 points\u2014including spots that made me think, \u201cWait, you\u2019re measuring that, too?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The team worked with such practiced ease and coordination that the measuring itself took only about five minutes.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Making the First Sample<\/h4>\n

Once the measurements were taken, it was time to make the first sample. Normally, cutting takes 30 to 40 minutes, sewing takes another 30 minutes, and the whole process takes around an hour and a half. Since I was there to document the process, they had prepared a sample for the 970 Panamera (the previous generation)<\/span> in advance. (This was an older sample they had kept, so the fabric was wrinkled. The fabric on a new cover would be much smoother.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

They draped the sample cover over the car\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2026and this is what it looked like.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 3: Marking Up the Cover<\/h4>\n

Nakagawa carefully checked the cover for tight spots and wrinkles.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

To my untrained eye, the 970 pattern looked like a pretty good fit, so I said, \u201cThis looks fine to me\u2026\u201d Nakagawa immediately replied, \u201cNo, it\u2019s not fitting well at all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, see this sag here? If rainwater or dust collects in this spot, the extra weight can wear down the fabric and eventually damage the car.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s also some tension around the hood and rear of the car. We need to leave a little more room in these areas so the cover doesn\u2019t put stress on the car. And it looks like the mirror position is slightly different between the old and new models. We\u2019ll need to correct that, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t noticed any of that at all, but now that he pointed it out, I could see what he meant. It was clear that the sample was still a long way from the fit Nakagawa was aiming for.<\/p>\n

Next, he marked the areas that needed adjustment, indicating things like \u201ctake this much off here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

These marks were kept to a minimum and, I was told, wouldn\u2019t affect the car\u2019s finish in any way. After checking everything, they removed the cover from the car.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Making the Second Sample<\/h4>\n

They then unpicked every seam in the cover. \u201cWait, you\u2019re taking the whole thing apart?\u201d I asked, surprised. Nakagawa replied, \u201cYes. We unpick all the seams, then adjust the areas we marked.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Following the notes showing where and how much to trim, they cut and adjusted the fabric, then spent around 30 minutes sewing it back together.<\/p>\n

Then they\u2019d fit it on the car again, mark it up, take it apart, make adjustments, sew it back together\u2014and repeat. Normally, they go through this process two or three times.<\/strong> Fine-tuning the fit takes a considerable amount of time.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sometimes a pattern turns out just right on the first try, but that\u2019s rare.<\/p>\n

Nakagawa makes the final call on whether the fit is right and the pattern is ready. He told me:<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if the measurements are correct and everyone else says it looks good enough, if it doesn\u2019t feel right to me, we\u2019ll do it again as many times as it takes until it does.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

That\u2019s impressive\u2026<\/p>\n

Apparently, Porsche models are relatively straightforward when it comes to getting the fit right. As I mentioned in my earlier interview<\/a>, Porsche design is natural and well-proportioned, so it doesn\u2019t usually require extensive adjustments. Supercars with more unusual designs, on the other hand, can be a real challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2192\u3010Next page\u3011The next day, the perfect car cover is finally complete!<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/p>\n

3. Leaving the Car for a Day\u2014and Picking It Up the Next<\/h3>\n

Wrapping Up Day One<\/h4>\n

I had to pick up my daughter from kindergarten, so I ended my visit for the day and headed home. To be honest, though, if I\u2019d had the time, I would have loved to stay and watch more of the work.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was amazed to learn just how carefully a car cover is made to protect your car, and I wanted to see how it would gradually take shape.<\/p>\n

When I mentioned this to Nakagawa, he said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right. The initial measuring only takes around five minutes, so some customers ask if they can stay and watch for a while afterward. They often say things like, \u2018Oh, I see!\u2019 and \u2018That makes sense!\u2019 and are really impressed. But we\u2019re just going through our usual process, so honestly, we\u2019re never quite sure what they find so surprising\u2026 (Laughs.)\u201d<\/p>\n

He also told me, \u201cWe\u2019re going to start reworking the cover now, so tomorrow you\u2019ll see a beautifully finished cover that fits just right. We hope you\u2019ll look forward to it.\u201d I replied, \u201cI\u2019ll leave it in your hands!\u201d and started to hand him the Panamera\u2019s key. He stopped me:<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you can take your key home with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked, \u201cI thought I was supposed to leave the key with you?\u201d He explained:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople other than our employees, including contractors and other visitors, sometimes come and go, so we don\u2019t keep customers\u2019 keys, just to be safe. Sometimes customers worry that the alarm will go off if the car is locked and gets bumped<\/strong>, and think they should leave us the key. But we won\u2019t move the car at all, so there\u2019s nothing to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n

They were taking even greater care with my car than I would have expected. I could see how that attention to detail carried through into the way they made their covers. (Just don\u2019t forget to bring your car key with you the next day! Laughs.)<\/span><\/p>\n

I drove home in the courtesy Daihatsu Move, then headed back to Nakabayashi Kogyo at 11 a.m. the following morning, excited to see how the cover had turned out.<\/p>\n

It Was Finally Finished!<\/h4>\n

I parked the courtesy car in front of Nakabayashi Kogyo, slowly opened the door, and\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cWow\u2014it\u2019s finished!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The slight tension and sagging we\u2019d seen in the sample were gone, and the fit looked much better.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

With the first-day sample, quite a bit of the wheels was still visible. The finished cover came down far enough to cover them properly.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a comparison between the first-day sample, made from the 970 pattern, and the finished cover.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Most people, myself included, probably wouldn\u2019t notice much of a difference, but Nakagawa says it\u2019s a completely different fit. Looking closely, the hood and bumper look a little cramped in the \u201cbefore\u201d<\/strong> photo. Those areas have been improved in the \u201cafter\u201d<\/strong> photo, and the Panamera looks a little more comfortable, too. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n

The mirror area was also designed with a little extra room, so the cover won\u2019t put pressure on the mirror even if it\u2019s accidentally left unfolded.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Apparently, some customers ask for a tighter fit because \u201ca snug cover looks better.\u201d<\/strong> But Nakabayashi Kogyo puts function first, with protecting the car as its top priority, so they politely decline requests for a tighter fit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I assumed I\u2019d take this cover home with me, but it turned out that wasn\u2019t quite how it worked\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After choosing the fabric (I opted for the fleece-lined version!)<\/span> and accessories such as the fasteners, they would make the final cover and mail the first one to me at home later. (A value of \u00a552,600.)<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a great deal!<\/p>\n

Protecting the Porsche You Love<\/h4>\n

As I mentioned earlier, we already use Nakabayashi Kogyo covers at home. My husband says:<\/p>\n

\u201cSince we started using a Nakabayashi Kogyo cover, the car hardly gets dirty at all. It stayed put through rain and wind like this year\u2019s typhoon, and it\u2019s lightweight, durable, and easy to put on and take off.<\/strong> I\u2019ve had to wash the car only one-fifth to one-tenth as often.<\/strong> I was a little concerned at first because the lining was thin, but it hasn\u2019t caused any noticeable scratches. They\u2019ve really thought it through. Of course, the cover itself gets dirty, but without it, all that dirt and dust would end up on the car, and I\u2019d have to wash it off every time. It\u2019s best to wash the car as little as possible\u2014after all, washing is what causes the most scratches.\u201d<\/p>\n

At first, when I heard that a car cover costs \u00a540,000 or \u00a550,000, I thought, \u201cWow, that\u2019s expensive!\u201d But after seeing how much care goes into making each one by hand, \u00a530,000 to \u00a560,000 almost seems too cheap<\/strong> for a cover like this.<\/p>\n

After all, Porsche charges \u00a574,000 for an option that does nothing more than add an embossed Porsche Crest to the front and rear headrests\u2026 (Laughs.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t help asking Nakagawa, \u201cIsn\u2019t that a little too inexpensive? You could probably raise the price a bit\u2026\u201d He replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re confident that the quality we offer at this price represents excellent value. We haven\u2019t changed our prices in five years, either. That said, some people do consider the covers expensive. That\u2019s why we want to explain the process and the thinking behind our work, so customers understand what they\u2019re paying for and feel confident buying one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nakabayashi Kogyo, a long-established car cover maker, is currently receiving a surge of orders. The in-person measurement service is popular, too, and bookings are several months out. After seeing the process up close, I can understand why customers love them.<\/p>\n
