When it was released, BMW was at its peak in F1, and this engine incorporated that cutting-edge technology without holding back.<\/p>\n<p>The 5-liter V10 engine produces 507ps at 7,750rpm and 53.0kgm of torque at 6,100rpm\u2014a high-revving engine that\u2019s almost unimaginable today. The redline sits around 8,250rpm, showcasing its incredible potential.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/7C0268E5-F6E7-40E8-88B0-4E08DA4A0DD3-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW V10 Engine\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Getting in and pressing the start button, the engine fires up relatively quietly. It doesn\u2019t have the ferocity you might expect from a V10. It\u2019s just a bit louder than a regular 5 Series, nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>The transmission is the SMG (SMG III), which at the time was only available on BMW\u2019s sports models. It stands for Sequential Manual Gearbox. Unlike modern PDK or other DCT transmissions, <strong>it\u2019s a so-called \u201csemi-automatic,\u201d a manual gearbox that operates the clutch automatically.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had often heard that the SMG has harsh shift shocks and expensive repairs, but starting off, there was no noticeable shock at all. The car moves off smoothly, as if a skilled driver were operating the clutch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DB25004C-2728-4F39-9D4C-74119C6D95D7-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW M5 SMG\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The gear shifts to second with a slight pull on first gear. When the clutch disengages, you feel a slight forward jolt from the torque drop. This isn\u2019t a shift shock per se, but rather a shake caused by torque fluctuation\u2014not the harsh \u201cbang\u201d you\u2019d get from a poorly tuned old automatic.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s similar to the feeling of the Abarth 595\u2019s automatic transmission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I thought, \u201cHey, this actually drives quite normally,\u201d<\/strong> and started cruising slowly in normal mode.<\/p>\n<p>You hardly notice it\u2019s a V10 engine; it feels like a sporty sedan with a bit more edge. The ride is comfortable, the power isn\u2019t overwhelming, and while the steering is on the sportier side, overall it feels mild\u2014<strong>much tamer than the M5 image I had in my mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On some downhill and tight corners, you can feel the V10\u2019s weight a bit, and I wondered if this setup wasn\u2019t really suited for Japan\u2019s narrow, twisty mountain roads.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unleashing_the_V10_Engine\"><\/span>Unleashing the V10 Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Next, I pressed the M button to switch to M Dynamic mode. The engine power, previously limited to 400ps, jumps to 507ps, and the suspension tightens up. The M5 transforms like a beast unleashed from its chains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/9014DB70-5C9C-4C75-976E-51EC2C990677-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW M5 M Button\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27261\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/7E47C26A-69BA-4B66-94C0-CAD66B8EBC41-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW M5 Exhaust\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The cornering ease is completely different.<\/strong> What felt a bit front-heavy before suddenly disappears. The tire grip feels dramatically improved. The car holds a stable posture and carves through corners with thrilling agility.<\/p>\n<p>The tachometer needle hovers just before 12 o\u2019clock as I accelerate. The car is very manageable and the exhaust note is fantastic. This particular car has a one-off aftermarket exhaust, so I can\u2019t compare it to stock, but this exhaust is gentle in volume and tone, making it very pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a high-revving engine, it doesn\u2019t demand \u201c<strong>Push it harder!<\/strong>\u201d like a GT3 does. You can enjoy sporty driving on public roads by keeping the revs in the mid-range.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/BEBF25ED-1F2E-48AD-B066-BCDFA06CD9A9-853x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW M5\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In M Dynamic mode, shift speeds quicken. Still, being a semi-automatic, it\u2019s honestly slower than Porsche\u2019s PDK or other DCTs. There\u2019s a clear torque dip during shifts, causing your head to jerk slightly each time.<\/p>\n<p>Probably, <strong>if I matched the throttle input better, the shifts would be smoother,<\/strong> but I didn\u2019t have the chance to experiment further, which is a bit disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>Though the unfamiliar SMG made the driving a bit jerky, cornering was still a lot of fun. <strong>As speed builds, the car feels like it shrinks around you,<\/strong> a sensation similar to the Panamera.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/5AFD71DB-4E03-4C35-A359-AD800FCD9D20-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW M5 Wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a straight, I pressed the accelerator deeper.<\/p>\n<p>The tachometer needle jumped sharply, and around 6,500rpm, it surged like a two-stage rocket. The acceleration G-forces were impressive, but the finely tuned V10 sound relentlessly stirred the driver\u2019s emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Aiming for 8,000rpm, the engine didn\u2019t falter but pushed even harder. This sensation borders on madness and fear\u2014a feeling very much like the high-revving zone of a Porsche GT3 engine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/0A90FFE9-9AB1-495B-ADE9-0950A8E92D58-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW M5 Instrument Cluster\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are many high-revving engines in the world, and I\u2019ve experienced quite a few, but <strong>engines that accelerate exponentially in the last 1,000 to 2,000rpm are rare.<\/strong> Most tend to slow down or sound like they\u2019re running out of breath.<\/p>\n<p>Among them, the M5\u2019s V10 offers a superb revving experience. This is truly a dramatic engine. It\u2019s calm and torquey at low revs, fun to rev through the mid-range, and finishes with a high-revving frenzy worthy of a grand finale.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Now_the_Time_to_Own_One\"><\/span>Is Now the Time to Own One?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is truly a German treasure. A magnificent engine. <strong>I believe it\u2019s a masterpiece worthy of the name Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, environmental and noise regulations make it impossible to release engines like this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1256E447-F759-4FCA-9F1E-8B7589FA8EE0-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"M5\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are still some of these gems sleeping in the used car market at affordable prices. At the time of writing, Car Sensor lists only five units, priced between 1.77 million and 4.65 million yen.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, they might be expensive for their age, and maintenance and repair costs will add up. According to an owner, they were cheaper when first purchased but have been gradually rising.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This V10 engine is unique to BMW and will never be made again.<\/strong> If you\u2019re interested, it might be wise to buy one before they become truly unavailable. At the very least, this engine alone is worth the price.
