Since the equator\u2014the Earth\u2019s \u201cwaistline\u201d\u2014is about 40,075 km, this means the test driving distance is roughly equivalent to circling the Earth about 70 times.<\/strong> The article described the following:<\/p>\n

The 911 series is always developed to achieve both \u201chigh performance\u201d and \u201ceveryday usability,\u201d<\/strong> and to further enhance comfort, it undergoes rigorous testing. Specifically:
\n\u2460 In summer, testing in Death Valley where temperatures exceed 50\u00b0C<\/strong> focuses on maintaining the air conditioning system, engine thermal management, and effects of thermal expansion.
\n\u2461 In Finland\u2019s -35\u00b0C cold<\/strong>, tests cover cold starts, traction, handling, braking performance, and response speed of control systems.
\n\u2462 Testing on circuits in China and rough roads within the Arctic Circle.<\/strong>
\n\u2463 Comprehensive tests of chassis, engine, transmission, and brakes at the N\u00fcrburgring.<\/strong>
\n\u2464 At Italy\u2019s Nard\u00f2<\/strong> (which Porsche currently owns)<\/span>, tests focus on stability and cooling at top speeds.
\n\u2465 Data collection at Death Valley\u2019s dry salt lake, about 90m below sea level, the second lowest point in the Western Hemisphere.<\/strong>
\n\u2466 Tests at 4,300m altitude in Colorado\u2019s thin air<\/strong> to check energy recovery efficiency and fuel system performance.<\/p>\n

As a result, the test vehicle\u2019s mileage reached an astonishing 3 million kilometers.<\/p>\n

Amazing\u2026 they really go that far\u2026 I was previously surprised by the smooth ride of the new Cayenne during a test drive with my spouse<\/a>, and it makes sense that the Cayenne undergoes repeated testing on off-road and rough surfaces, so it\u2019s no wonder it rides so comfortably on regular roads.<\/p>\n

That got me wondering, \u201cWhat about the Panamera\u2019s test drives?\u201d<\/strong> The 911 is Porsche\u2019s flagship model and probably gets extra attention in testing, but what about the Panamera we have at home?<\/p>\n

How Is the Panamera Tested?<\/h3>\n

Searching online, I found a page on Porsche Japan\u2019s site introducing the harsh test environments!<\/p>\n

Challenging the limits with the Panamera. Creating the highest quality from hardship. With this radical motto, the next-generation Panamera conducts its final shakedown on the scorching, dusty, gravel-covered lands of South Africa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be so hard on the Panamera\u2026\u201d I thought, feeling a bit sorry for it right from the start (lol). This article covers the \u201charsh dry-land testing\u201d<\/strong> of the 971 Panamera, and it also mentions that \u201ctesting in extremely cold regions has already been completed,\u201d<\/strong> so like the 911, it seems the Panamera undergoes thorough testing from scorching heat to freezing cold.<\/p>\n

By the way, the main updates from the 970 to the 971 model include:<\/p>\n

\u30fbNewly developed 4.0-liter V8 engine
\n\u30fbIncreased use of aluminum for weight reduction
\n\u30fbSportier design with a lower roofline than the previous generation
\n\u30fbExpanded luggage compartment capacity and more spacious interior
\n\u30fbA new ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) system controlled by 13 different control units<\/p>\n

All these newly designed parts, among others, undergo testing like this to confirm and improve whether they \u201cfunction correctly and reliably under any harsh conditions.\u201d<\/strong> The article also mentioned this at the start:<\/p>\n

The feel of the center console switches still needs improvement, and the shift-up from 2nd to 3rd gear remains somewhat stiff. This would not be approved by the development manager.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u30fbClimbing a steep slalom up a mountain in the scorching heat, then suddenly applying the brakes. The Panamera came to a complete stop within seconds. The first test was a success.<\/p>\n

\u30fbToday\u2019s test covers 600 km of country roads.<\/strong> The blazing sun mercilessly beats down on the body, quickly covering the vehicle in dust and sand, while it adapts to rough asphalt full of potholes and rapidly changing weather conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u30fbThe total test driving distance reaches several hundred thousand kilometers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u30fbThe route climbs to an altitude exceeding 3,000 meters.<\/strong> Although harsh conditions are simulated beforehand in Weissach, nothing beats real-world testing. At the development site, \u201cthe truth is on the road.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u30fbThe 8-speed Porsche DoppelKupplung (PDK) operates smoother than ever. Driving at 120 km\/h across the scorching land, the noise is minimal, confirming a comfortable drive.<\/strong> The 7th and 8th gears are designed to reduce fuel consumption, significantly improving average fuel economy.<\/p>\n

\u30fbThe test crew suddenly accelerated. This test allows exceeding the speed limit, and official certification has been issued for this.<\/p>\n

\u30fbCountless potholes relentlessly assault the air suspension and low-profile tires, violently shaking the body and kicking up dust. With such rough roads, the driver must focus solely on the drive ahead.<\/p>\n

After such brutal test drives, even upon arriving at the local hotel late at night, the test staff work late into the night solving problems, spending hours poring over the complex prototype guidelines before finally going to sleep.<\/strong> Incredible\u2026 if it were me, I\u2019d be completely out cold during the test drive itself (-_-)<\/p>\n

Panamera, Hats Off to You.<\/h3>\n

Finally, about Delner, the overall manager of the Panamera model range, the article said:<\/p>\n

Delner reviews the feedback from each crew member and reflects on the day\u2019s tests once again. What details are unsatisfactory? How can they be optimized? He is already simulating tomorrow\u2019s tests.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Wow, just wow. Until now, when I heard there are \u201cpeople who do Porsche test drives,\u201d<\/strong> I thought,<\/p>\n

\u201cLucky them \u2014 they get to drive their favorite cars, and since it\u2019s Porsche, they get paid to say \u2018this part isn\u2019t good, that part\u2019s no good.\u2019 What a great job!\u201d<\/p>\n

But I was so wrong. Even if I could be involved in developing my beloved Porsche, I could never handle such a grueling job.<\/p>\n

Actually, I thought \u201cNo one would ever drive a Panamera in such harsh conditions,\u201d<\/strong> but then I read an engineer\u2019s words: \u201cWe don\u2019t think any Panamera customers would drive on such rough roads, but testing under these extreme conditions reveals many weaknesses that wouldn\u2019t otherwise be seen.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m truly impressed. No wonder the Panamera is such a great car. By the way, starting today, I\u2019m traveling to Amakusa, Kyushu in the Panamera. We\u2019ll take a ferry there and back, but I\u2019m hoping to tour around Aso while there\u2026 though the weather forecast unfortunately calls for rain. (I\u2019m a rain and fog magnet, so I\u2019ve almost never had a sunny trip, but I\u2019m not expecting much this time either.)<\/span> I\u2019m really looking forward to driving the Panamera again after a while!<\/p>\n
