{"id":37175,"date":"2021-12-11T06:00:59","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T21:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37175"},"modified":"2021-12-11T00:48:52","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T15:48:52","slug":"718-gt4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/718-gt4\/","title":{"rendered":"Long-Awaited 718 Cayman GT4 Test Drive Review: How Does It Differ from the Spider?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-v2_0_74 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-grey ez-toc-container-direction\">\n<div class=\"ez-toc-title-container\">\n<p class=\"ez-toc-title\" style=\"cursor:inherit\">\u30b3\u30f3\u30c6\u30f3\u30c4<\/p>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-title-toggle\"><\/span><\/div>\n<nav><ul class='ez-toc-list ez-toc-list-level-1 ' ><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/718-gt4\/#718_Cayman_GT4\" >718 Cayman GT4<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/718-gt4\/#Engine_Shift_Feel\" >Engine &#038; Shift Feel<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/718-gt4\/#Handling\" >Handling<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/718-gt4\/#Do_You_Need_the_GT4_RS\" >Do You Need the GT4 RS?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<p>For some reason, this is actually my first time writing a test drive article on the GT4. <strong>This time, I drove the 718 Cayman GT4.<\/strong> I\u2019ve driven the sibling 718 Spider several times, so I\u2019d like to focus on the differences between the two in this review.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"718_Cayman_GT4\"><\/span>718 Cayman GT4<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The GT4 is a grade developed by Porsche\u2019s GT division, so its origins differ somewhat from the regular models.<\/p>\n<p>Equipped with exclusive features like Adaptive GT Sports Suspension and GT brakes, it\u2019s also armed with large front spoilers and rear diffusers designed with aerodynamics in mind. <strong>Even visually, it has a completely different, more intense presence than the regular Cayman.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This particular car is fitted with the Clubsport Package, which includes a roll cage in the rear.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27154\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/D10DA07D-55DA-4D48-8AC6-65B2BA46E2DA-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Roll cage of the 718 Cayman GT4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/D71AFFAA-E0DA-412C-9558-F19C67B8A7DA-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Seats of the 718 Cayman GT4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a top speed of 304 km\/h and 0-100 km\/h in 4.4 seconds, it completely surpasses the performance of the 996-generation GT3, and its N\u00fcrburgring Nordschleife lap time is 7 minutes 28 seconds\u2014quite fast for this class.<\/p>\n<p>Sliding into the bucket seat, I adjusted the seating position. I still really like how comfortable these seats are. <strong>The engine start-up sound, like other 718 models, is quite bold.<\/strong> The tachometer needle jumps up to around 2000 rpm\u2014a classic Porsche starting ritual.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_Shift_Feel\"><\/span>Engine &#038; Shift Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Since this is a right-hand drive manual, I was a bit thrown off at first, but I pressed the clutch and shifted into first gear. The short-throw shifter feels very satisfying, engaging smoothly as if sucked in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The shift feel is similar to the 991.2 GT3 Touring, but the GT4 feels a bit lighter to operate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting off, there\u2019s plenty of torque from low revs, so it\u2019s effortless. Like with the GTS 4.0, I feel that recent Porsche manuals have become really easy and user-friendly. Even beginners should be able to handle it well.<\/p>\n<p>Once underway, <strong>as expected from a GT model, mechanical noises are quite noticeable.<\/strong> It\u2019s not as loud as the GT3, but definitely louder than a regular Cayman.<\/p>\n<p>The engine noise, intake sound, and gear noise blend together, creating a racing atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/453E4B46-A4BB-4B61-BC1C-022A8B4B3B70-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Meters of the 718 Cayman GT4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27156\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27156\" class=\"wp-image-27156 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DF770490-6582-4D8D-97FA-4447555B18FF-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Option panel of the 718 Cayman GT4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pressing \u2018AUTO BLIP\u2019 activates automatic blipping on downshifts.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_27153\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27153\" class=\"size-large wp-image-27153\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/D616168A-B0F3-4F02-8BC8-4FE2CFF93461-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GT4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27153\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The blipping isn\u2019t flashy; it prioritizes speed and efficiency over showmanship.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here I noticed one difference from the Spider. Since the Spider has an open roof, noise hardly reverberates inside the cabin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead, the exhaust sound is much more audible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So when the exhaust valve closes after starting to drive, it feels suddenly quiet. But in the GT4, mechanical noise inside the cabin is more prominent, so you don\u2019t really notice much change in volume. Of course, you can tell when the valve opens and closes, but <strong>you\u2019re more likely distracted by the cabin noise, making the difference less obvious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, there\u2019s less awkwardness in the sound, and the noise changes appropriately with speed and revs, making driving more enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>The power feel is naturally not much different from the Spider. The 718\u2019s naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine has a firm rev feel but delivers solid power and strong revving\u2014truly a well-crafted engine.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>it doesn\u2019t have the razor-sharp response or the terrifyingly wild high-revving surge of the GT3,<\/strong> so don\u2019t expect the same feel as the GT3.<\/p>\n<p>With a maximum output of 420 ps, it\u2019s probably just about right for enjoying spirited driving on the road. The GT3\u2019s 500 ps is honestly too much for Japanese public roads. You can enjoy revving it in first or second gear, but that makes the response and power overwhelming, resulting in jerky, difficult driving.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to that, <strong>I think the GT4\u2019s power is still manageable and usable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Handling\"><\/span>Handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now, the handling is what really stands out.<\/p>\n<p>The handling differs from the Spider. Actually, it\u2019s quite different. First, the initial steering response is significantly different. It\u2019s like the difference between the 991 and 992. The GT4\u2019s nose starts to turn in relatively early after the initial steering input, with very little delay between turning the wheel and the car\u2019s reaction.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, <strong>the Spider has a bit more delay and feels like it gradually leans into the corner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, the difference between an open and closed body plays a role, but I feel Porsche deliberately tuned them differently beyond that.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/4492FE39-A812-4FB0-A79F-46074D5D9139-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Wheels of the 718 Cayman GT4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I personally really like this steering feel. <strong>It\u2019s supple yet quick, with minimal disconnect from the driver\u2019s sense.<\/strong> The GT3 feels even racier, making the driver feel more pressured, but the GT4\u2019s handling feels like a blend of the Spider and GT3, taking the best of both.<\/p>\n<p>This feeling reminded me of something\u2014it\u2019s close to the 981 Spider. I loved that chassis the most, and I think the 718 GT4 is quite similar.<\/p>\n<p>As for ride comfort, I haven\u2019t driven it much around town, so it\u2019s hard to say, but on the usual winding roads, it was very good and comfortable. <strong>Owners say it\u2019s perfectly drivable daily, and it certainly doesn\u2019t have the harshness of the GT3.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The brakes feel firmer than the standard model and require more pedal force than stroke to modulate. This is almost the same as the Spider. They\u2019re wonderfully controllable with no issues in stopping power.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_You_Need_the_GT4_RS\"><\/span>Do You Need the GT4 RS?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Actually, <strong>I\u2019ve already placed a reservation for the recently announced GT4 RS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether I\u2019ll get a production slot is uncertain, and if production numbers are too high, I might not buy it\u2014that\u2019s how undecided I was when I reserved it. But <strong>this test drive really piqued my interest in the GT4.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how much fun and how good a car this GT4 is to drive. So I want to try the RS, which is tuned even further.
