Just the Carrera 4 GTS and the AWD GTS are already scarce, but add the convertible roof and you get a very limited number of these cars in existence. This review focuses on this rare model, <strong>highlighting the differences compared to my own Carrera 4 GTS coupe and the 981 Boxster GTS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4B1ACEC3-B5D1-4BA7-9F1A-679FBEAF983B-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear of Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_Sound\"><\/span>Engine Sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When you start the engine, you get that lively startup sound unique to the GTS. The tachometer needle jumps instantly to around 2000 rpm and the engine lets out a \u201cVrooom!\u201d just like the coupe.<\/p>\n<p>However, with the roof down, the sound is a bit different from the coupe. You hear more of the exhaust note directly, which makes it feel richer. <strong>Compared to the 981 Boxster GTS, the sound is not just slightly lower but thicker, reflecting the extra 400cc displacement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/C2688CBB-A614-4218-8D19-DF630DEE0855-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (991.1) instrument panel\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Driving in Normal mode, the sound isn\u2019t overly aggressive. <strong>Even at low revs, the engine delivers a pleasant tone,<\/strong> with speed, torque, and the natural pitch changes of the NA engine perfectly in sync, making driving genuinely enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>Switch to Sport mode and open the valves of the sports exhaust, and that\u2019s when the GTS really shines. I\u2019ve compared it directly with the Carrera S Cabriolet equipped with the sports exhaust, and the difference is clear. The GTS sounds thicker and more powerful\u2014not just louder, but with a commanding presence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/65BA1D22-7ABA-4D08-AB93-5201D6CF4BD0-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the roof open, the exhaust note comes directly from the rear to the driver, which is truly exhilarating. <strong>The burbling sound is also clearer than in the coupe,<\/strong> so if you want to enjoy the exhaust sound, the Cabriolet is the better choice.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the coupe emphasizes intake noise more, with a \u201cGwooon!\u201d that resonates nicely inside the well-sealed cabin and off the rear glass. That sound is exciting in its own way.<\/p>\n<p>Comparing the GTS Cabriolet to the 981 Boxster GTS, <strong>the 981 is louder and has more pronounced burbling.<\/strong> In contrast, the <strong>991.1 GTS sounds a bit more mature and refined.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still, <strong>the 991.1 GTS is quite loud by Porsche standards,<\/strong> so if you find the 981 too loud or flashy, the 991.1 might suit you better.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Power_Feel\"><\/span>Power Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The engine is a 3.8L flat-six NA unit producing 430 ps, about 30 ps more than the S. This high-tuned engine delivers roughly 113 ps per liter and features upgraded cylinder heads, camshafts, and a variable resonance intake system\u2014equivalent to the power kit available for the S.<\/p>\n<p>However, the 30 ps difference isn\u2019t very noticeable in everyday driving. The difference is more apparent in the sound and the smooth high-revving character.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/B692B0BB-82CF-41F4-BF5A-197F79F1A650-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Cockpit of Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Compared to the coupe GTS, the Cabriolet feels just a little less sharp in acceleration. This is especially noticeable when you shift quickly to second gear after launching and continue accelerating. The extra weight of the Cabriolet likely accounts for this, making the acceleration feel slightly gentler than the coupe. Still, it\u2019s a top-tier performer.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the 981 Boxster GTS, the lighter Boxster (about 200 kg less) feels quicker off the line. But once you\u2019re up to speed, the 430 ps power advantage of the 911 is unmistakable.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Driving_Feel\"><\/span>Driving Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s get to the heart of this car: <strong>Is there a difference between the Cabriolet and the coupe?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I drive a 992 Carrera Cabriolet, and <strong>in the 992 generation, the difference between coupe and Cabriolet is minimal.<\/strong> The Cabriolet\u2019s rigidity is very high, and it holds up perfectly on the track, maintaining incredible grip and allowing aggressive driving with confidence.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, <strong>the early 991 Cabriolet isn\u2019t quite as rock-solid.<\/strong> This particular car has the optional Power Steering Plus, which makes the steering feel light from the start, lacking the heavy, solid feedback you might expect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/89283B82-0A6F-484F-B310-54BD283A611D-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Wheels of Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean the body creaks or feels loose. When driving, the grip isn\u2019t as aggressive as the coupe\u2019s \u201cclawing\u201d contact patch but is gentler and more supple. This is different from the Targa\u2019s feel as well.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension isn\u2019t soft, so road impacts should be sharp like the coupe\u2019s, but it feels like the body\u2019s openings absorb some of the leftover vibrations the suspension can\u2019t handle. As a result, <strong>the ride is very supple, and in terms of comfort, it\u2019s closer to the 981 Boxster with PASM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, this car wears brand-new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, but it previously had Pirelli P-Zeros. I\u2019ve driven it with both, and the Pilot Sport 4S offers superior comfort, handling, roundness, and less roughness.<\/p>\n<p>Someone once called these tires \u201c<strong>tires made by the gods,<\/strong>\u201d and that\u2019s exactly right. If you\u2019re unsure about tire choice, the Pilot Sport 4S is the clear winner.<\/p>\n<p>Turning into corners, the front-end response is also a bit milder than the coupe\u2019s. Again, it\u2019s similar to the 981 Boxster\u2019s feel. You clip the apex and get on the throttle, where the AWD system really shines. Just like the coupe, you can confidently floor the accelerator, and the front torque distribution keeps the car stable, allowing quick exits from corners.<\/p>\n<p>This control is outstanding, and the pace you can maintain here is very different from driving the 981. Plus, it gives the driver a mental edge\u2014you can hum along while driving at a pace that would push the Boxster to its limits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26993\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4B055C5B-AF49-4C62-92DA-D3A52D3FEE3C-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reading this, you might think, \u201c<strong>The 911 is better than the Boxster, after all.<\/strong>\u201d But Porsche isn\u2019t that simple. Sure, the 911 might be faster on a circuit.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>fun and speed aren\u2019t the same, and the kinds of fun differ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s the analog joy of handling a mid-engine Boxster, and then there\u2019s the overwhelming stability created by the 911 Carrera 4 GTS\u2019s AWD and PTV (torque vectoring). Both offer unique pleasures.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, first-time Porsche buyers start looking for a Boxster or Cayman but then switch to a 911 simply because it fits their budget. That\u2019s their choice, but it\u2019s often why people end up buying again later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember, a higher price doesn\u2019t always mean more fun.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s fun depends greatly on the style the buyer seeks. Clarifying what you enjoy and value will help you avoid regrets.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Recommended_For\"><\/span>Recommended For<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To circle back, <strong>there\u2019s definitely a clear difference in character between the early 991 Cabriolet and coupe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want a strictly sporty driving experience, I recommend the coupe. But if you prioritize ride comfort and a lighter feel, and want to enjoy mountain or coastal roads at a brisk pace, the Cabriolet is the way to go.<\/p>\n<p>That said, if you\u2019re unsure, I\u2019d recommend the Cabriolet. The <strong>open-air freedom and sense of occasion you get with the Cabriolet can\u2019t be matched by the coupe, and for everyday driving, its performance is more than enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/E419088F-5CF2-419A-B9D2-CCA7496F578D-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (991.1) and 981 Boxster GTS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, I bought the coupe myself because I already own another Cabriolet and didn\u2019t want too much overlap, plus I\u2019m considering some track use.
