Everyone truly falls in love with this naturally aspirated engine, unanimously praising its thrilling sound and feel.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I drove the early 991 Targa 4S. <strong>When it comes to the Targa, its production numbers are even lower than the GT3 variants, making it the rarest 911 grade.<\/strong> On top of that, this particular car is Racing Yellow\u2014a super rare gem among rare cars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/37DBDDC9-F43F-4A89-9E65-2A50FC997679-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Targa 4S (991 Early Model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Previously, when the owner asked me, \u201c<strong>What do you think about a yellow Targa?<\/strong>\u201d I gave a rather hesitant answer: \u201cHmm, a yellow Targa? Well, I guess it depends on personal taste\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I only pictured the Targa in more subdued colors and thought yellow might be too flashy.<\/p>\n<p>However, seeing the actual car completely changed my mind. <strong>In fact, it looks incredibly cool\u2014almost too cool.<\/strong> The silver Targa bar contrasts beautifully with the yellow body, and the vibrant yellow perfectly complements the 911\u2019s body lines, making it a truly eye-catching car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26958\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/7142D4F7-9A4B-4783-93A8-BBC3013FA2A1-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche option switches\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Besides the color, this car boasts some very attractive options: <strong>Sport Chrono, seat ventilation, and PDCC.<\/strong> The only thing missing is the sport exhaust, but I imagine the previous owner prioritized comfort when ordering this car.<\/p>\n<p>The setup clearly reflects the owner\u2019s intentions and concept, which I really appreciate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Targas_Feel_and_PDCC\"><\/span>Targa\u2019s Feel and PDCC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The engine is a 3.8L naturally aspirated flat-six producing 400 horsepower. Being a Targa, the car weighs over 1600 kg, which is more than 100 kg heavier than my Carrera 4 GTS at 1500 kg. To compensate, the Targa features specially tuned suspension components with different part numbers than the standard Carrera.<\/p>\n<p>The initial driving feel is very mild. Compared to the Carrera 4 GTS\u2019s firm grip on the road, the Targa feels like it\u2019s gently holding the surface with soft paws\u2014very smooth and pleasant.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1820CE73-A175-4424-8B34-E7018080D22E-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26957\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/6F3BDB1A-72D9-434E-A91B-BFE470E54AFB-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Targa 4S (991 Early Model)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even when driving at normal speeds and cornering, the extra weight is hardly noticeable. Just like the 992 Targa, it doesn\u2019t feel harder to turn, nor does it exhibit understeer or oversteer\u2014its behavior is just like a regular 911.<\/p>\n<p>Especially with <strong>PDCC equipped, the roll control is exquisite, allowing the car to corner almost flat.<\/strong> This makes the Targa top\u2019s extra weight feel even less significant.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/80CC7F2F-870F-46F1-A22D-4C6FD4A6C612-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Targa 4S (991 Early Model) wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With PDCC, the car moves as if a skilled driver is taking the perfect racing line with an out-in-out technique, minimizing body sway for the occupants. So even if you\u2019re a less confident driver or often have passengers in the front seat, this option is highly recommended as it keeps body movement to a minimum despite rough steering or imperfect lines.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_You_Feel_the_Weight\"><\/span>Do You Feel the Weight?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Regarding rigidity, <strong>the early 991 Targa feels a bit more solid than the Cabriolet.<\/strong> It\u2019s somewhere between the coupe and cabriolet in stiffness. But this is only noticeable when compared directly; most people wouldn\u2019t notice it when driving alone.<\/p>\n<p>When revving the engine a bit, the relatively quiet normal exhaust starts to sing beautifully around 3000\u20134000 rpm. It\u2019s definitely a pleasant sound\u2014clear and loud, yet gentle and pure.<\/p>\n<p>This is a sound you won\u2019t hear from today\u2019s turbo engines or GPF-equipped cars. While sport exhausts are louder and have appealing burbling, this <strong>normal exhaust still sounds very satisfying.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This impression is the same as what I felt when driving the early 991 Carrera base model before.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26959\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/E50F2B79-CB08-4FDC-B74F-89765DBA9586-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26961 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3628F5D4-98D1-44A8-9B36-4C27AB070249-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Targa bar\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When accelerating harder, I finally felt a bit of the \u2018weight.\u2019 Indeed, the acceleration is somewhat milder than my Carrera 4 GTS or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/911-turbo-cabriolet-4s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carrera S Cabriolet<\/a>. Even accounting for the 30 hp difference between the GTS and S, the difference remains. <strong>This is probably just due to the difference in vehicle weight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, this weight difference is only noticeable at this moment; in other situations, it\u2019s barely perceptible.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the extra weight contributes to a plush, substantial ride quality. This \u2018substantial\u2019 feeling isn\u2019t the solid, road-gripping sensation of the early 991 Carrera 4 GTS or the 992, but more like wearing well-cushioned sneakers firmly planted on the ground\u2014a different kind of solidity.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Targa_Is_a_Four-Wheel_Drive_for_a_Reason\"><\/span>Targa Is a Four-Wheel Drive for a Reason<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Also, <strong>all Targa models are four-wheel drive, and this system further enhances the Targa\u2019s driving performance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other words, the Targa\u2019s excellent driving dynamics depend on its four-wheel drive. The gearbox and differential unit at the front help balance the front-to-rear weight distribution, offsetting the heavy rear Targa roof system. While driving, torque is sent to the front wheels, reducing pitch and counteracting the handling drawbacks of the rear-heavy layout.<\/p>\n<p>Riding this Targa, I felt I finally understood <strong>why Targa models are only available with four-wheel drive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26948\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/C9649254-5454-4659-867A-F1A140ADD62B-960x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Targa 4S (991 Early Model)\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a comfortable and fast 911. As a 911, it can handle any use case more than adequately, but if I had to pick the ideal scenario, it would be perfect for date drives, cruising, and city use.<\/p>\n<p>Lower the Targa top, pull up to a hotel entrance, and casually hand over the keys for valet parking. This urban-friendly 911 suits that kind of scene best.
