Test Drive of the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This blog originally started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/2017\/06\/13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">because of my wife\u2019s love for the Panamera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In our household, we have driven the 970 late-model Panamera Edition and the 971 early-model Panamera Turbo, and although we now have a Cayenne instead, the Panamera remains a beloved Porsche.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I happened to borrow a 971 early-model Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid as a loaner, so I\u2019d like to share my review.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid<\/h3>\n<p>Let me start with the conclusion: <strong>this car is an absolute masterpiece.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s a car that costs over 30 million yen at the starting price, so that\u2019s to be expected, but in terms of feel and driving performance, it\u2019s on a completely different level compared to any sports sedan in the same class I\u2019ve experienced\u2014<strong>in fact, it outshines even more expensive sports sedans by a wide margin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The refinement in driving performance, especially in the drivetrain and suspension, shows a level of dedication and seriousness that\u2019s unmatched. To put it bluntly, other cars feel like toys in comparison.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26712\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/7600E461-959D-4F45-9D48-0A522B609DFC-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971) instrument cluster\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid builds on the Panamera Turbo I previously owned by adding a hybrid system. The 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo produces 550 ps, plus an additional 136 ps from the electric motor, bringing the total system output to 680 ps and torque to 850 Nm (86.7 kgm).<\/p>\n<p>When you get in and turn the starter switch, it starts in the default E-Power mode, so the engine doesn\u2019t fire up immediately. Compared to the Cayenne E-Hybrid, the faint inverter noise at a stop is a bit more noticeable, but it\u2019s not a problem once you get used to it.<\/p>\n<p>After confirming the \u201cReady\u201d indicator on the meter, gently press the accelerator.<\/p>\n<p>The smooth initial response is unique to motor-driven power. The transmission isn\u2019t the tiptronic (torque converter AT) found in our Cayenne E-Hybrid, but the Panamera uses a PDK (dual-clutch AT), so it feels more direct.<\/p>\n<p>Especially from second gear onward, the acceleration is clearly powerful, and you might even think, \u201cWow!\u201d as it eagerly picks up speed. Switching from the Cayenne hybrid, it takes a little getting used to. Even with the same motor, the Panamera feels stronger overall than the Cayenne.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/B20447E7-2F4A-49B8-BE41-4083BA875D9D-853x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971) wheel\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The highlight is the suspension feel. <strong>Simply saying \u201ccomfortable ride\u201d doesn\u2019t do it justice.<\/strong> Among all the Panameras and Cayennes I\u2019ve driven, this has the best ride quality by far.<\/p>\n<p>If we talk only about smoothness or softness, the current Cayenne\u2019s air suspension might be better, but the Panamera combines a strong sense of tire contact and suspension rigidity with lightness and smoothness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is exactly the ride quality you\u2019d expect from a Panamera.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s sporty yet ultra-comfortable. The Panamera\u2019s concept of combining these seemingly opposing qualities is perfectly reflected in the suspension setup. The Panamera Turbo leans more toward sportiness, and the GTS even more so, but the Turbo S adds a higher level of refined comfort to the Turbo\u2019s suspension.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26717\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26717\" class=\"wp-image-26717 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/B62CA727-860E-489C-A7AE-76C1E0DA29EB-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971) rear wing\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The wide rear wing exclusive to Turbo and GTS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One reason for this is the standard PCCB and PDCC on the Turbo S. The ceramic composite brakes, much lighter than cast iron brakes, pair excellently with the massive 21-inch Turbo wheels. Even in situations where the cast iron brakes on the Turbo make the suspension feel heavy, the Turbo S\u2019s tires smoothly absorb bumps with a light, quick motion.<\/p>\n<p>When going over bumps, <strong>you only hear a soft \u201cton, tan\u201d sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Comparing to the Taycan\u2019s air suspension plus PDCC, the Taycan feels flatter, but the Panamera better absorbs road roughness, while the Taycan\u2019s suspension feels slightly firmer. (This may also depend on road and wheel choices.)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Impressions on Winding Roads<\/h3>\n<p>The cornering is truly impressive. In Sport Plus mode, the ride height lowers significantly and the suspension stiffens to the max. The official vehicle weight is 2360 kg, but it doesn\u2019t feel heavy at all. <strong>In fact, it feels as light and nimble as the Panamera Turbo I used to drive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the magical roll control, body roll is clearly minimal. <strong>I\u2019ve said many times on this blog that the effect of PDCC is tremendous.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26705\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/A7B37841-64BD-469A-AD44-FDB3EDF093D2-720x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971) on winding roads\" width=\"720\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This feature is especially recommended for drivers who lack confidence. Even if your cornering line isn\u2019t perfect, the car minimizes roll as if a highly skilled driver took the shortest line.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/D39D149D-1B06-485E-BC41-9F334DBE59F6-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971) on winding roads\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cornering posture, steering precision, and road feedback are all so excellent that it\u2019s hard to believe this is a large sports sedan. It feels like the car shrinks in size, and you joyfully carve through corners.<\/p>\n<p>The 680 ps power is hammered into the road, and the Panamera distributes torque to all four wheels, pushing forward relentlessly. While the acceleration is undeniably powerful, the weight makes the Turbo feel more aggressively quick in comparison.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the brakes, the regenerative braking feels somewhat weak.<\/p>\n<p>The Cayenne E-Hybrid\u2019s regenerative brake is strong from the start, but the Panamera\u2019s initial regen is gentle, with the physical brakes providing strong stopping power at the end. Since the physical brakes are PCCB, they naturally work well, but the difference between PCCB and regenerative braking feels quite noticeable, which was a bit odd.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Engine + Motor Feel<\/h3>\n<p>The key difference from the Turbo isn\u2019t power but engine feel. The Turbo\u2019s V8, like modern turbo engines, has minimal turbo lag, but since it\u2019s a high-performance engine, you can sometimes feel a slight torque dip when you push hard.<\/p>\n<p>The E-Hybrid motor skillfully fills in that torque gap. For example, during overtaking at 50 km\/h in town, <strong>the acceleration perfectly matches the accelerator input with zero turbo lag.<\/strong> It\u2019s truly delightful and reminiscent of the Taycan\u2019s feel. The Panamera adds the V8 engine sound to this, making it even more enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/FAC0AFE6-C6FF-4558-B416-3F57F543F635-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971) exhaust\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Turbo S wasn\u2019t equipped with the sports exhaust, but compared to our Turbo with sports exhaust, the volume difference is significant.<\/p>\n<p>It makes a respectable sound when revved, but there\u2019s almost no bubbling noise, and compared to the explosive roar of the Turbo with sports exhaust, it\u2019s much quieter.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Highway Impressions<\/h3>\n<p>On the highway, it truly feels like a king. The overwhelming power, stability, straight-line steadiness, and the confidence that it can handle any corner come together perfectly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26711\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/F39DBB14-B6A8-4D50-B758-F4BFBA5FC988-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A long-distance tour in this car would surely be extremely comfortable. <strong>The only downside is that Japan\u2019s highways are too easy for the Panamera.<\/strong> I think the car\u2019s abilities can really be unleashed only on the German Autobahn.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">My Wife\u2019s Impressions<\/h3>\n<p>After returning home, my wife took the Panamera keys and went out for a drive. Soon after, I received a message on my phone:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<strong>Within 2 seconds of starting, it\u2019s already amazing!<\/strong>\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26704\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/56356231-AFDE-45C3-81E9-8491CE271106-853x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971)\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how different the Turbo S really is. I\u2019ve written before about how Porsche\u2019s \u201cTurbo\u201d grade stands apart from others, but the top-tier \u201cTurbo S\u201d is not just a higher-performance version.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can clearly feel the distinct tuning and character.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After reluctantly returning the car, my wife and I joked, <strong>\u201cI wonder if they\u2019d sell that car to us?\u201d and \u201cMaybe we could trade it for our Cayenne (laughs).\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/736B982B-4A33-46A0-9195-9431790F4E59-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (971) interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If only the Panamera\u2019s rear seats were a bit roomier and could comfortably fit three kids, it would have been a close call.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how <strong>exceptional<\/strong> this Panamera was.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This blog originally started because of my wife\u2019s love for the Panamera.
