Understanding the PADM Error"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-v2_0_74 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-grey ez-toc-container-direction\">\n<div class=\"ez-toc-title-container\">\n<p class=\"ez-toc-title\" style=\"cursor:inherit\">\u30b3\u30f3\u30c6\u30f3\u30c4<\/p>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-title-toggle\"><\/span><\/div>\n<nav><ul class='ez-toc-list ez-toc-list-level-1 ' ><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/991-padm\/#PADM_Error\" >PADM Error<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/991-padm\/#What_is_PADM\" >What is PADM?<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/991-padm\/#How_Much_Does_PADM_Repair_Cost\" >How Much Does PADM Repair Cost?<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/991-padm\/#Why_Warranty_Matters_for_Porsche_Used_Cars\" >Why Warranty Matters for Porsche Used Cars<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PADM_Error\"><\/span>PADM Error<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As I mentioned recently on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/space-kikinogashihaishin-202109\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter Space<\/a>, while driving my newly purchased early 991 Carrera 4 GTS, I suddenly noticed a PADM error warning on the instrument panel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DB939307-194F-43E0-90EC-5341ED71A1A1-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"PADM error warning\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The error is displayed in white (there also seems to be a yellow version), so it doesn\u2019t affect driving and the car runs normally without any issues.<\/p>\n<p>From my research across various SNS platforms, this PADM error appears to be a common fault. <strong>It\u2019s especially frequent in the 981 series, followed by the 991 and 718 models.<\/strong> Overseas cases show that although rare, some 992 owners have also experienced it.<\/p>\n<p>I was aware of the PADM error issue when I bought the 991, so I was mentally prepared for a possible failure someday\u2014but I never expected it to happen so soon.<\/p>\n<p>Here, I\u2019d like to summarize what I\u2019ve learned about this PADM failure.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_PADM\"><\/span>What is PADM?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>PADM stands for Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount, an electronically controlled engine mount system equipped on cars with the Sport Chrono Package.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26181\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26181\" class=\"wp-image-26181 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/P13_0629_a4_rgb-1280x905.jpg\" alt=\"PADM\" width=\"1280\" height=\"905\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dynamic engine mount on the 911<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Engine mounts absorb vibrations to prevent them from being directly transmitted to the body. The softer the mount, the better it absorbs vibrations, improving ride comfort\u2014but this also means some engine power is absorbed and lost, reducing responsiveness and handling.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, a stiffer mount improves responsiveness but worsens ride comfort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PADM electronically adjusts the stiffness of the mounts to balance ride comfort and responsiveness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, it continuously passes electricity through a magnetic material to variably control the mount\u2019s stiffness. Normally, it adjusts based on parameters like engine RPM. When cornering causes uneven engine load, it stiffens the side under more load to enhance handling. In Sport Plus mode, it stiffens the mounts to the maximum to boost vehicle dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve driven a Porsche with the Sport Chrono Package in Sport Plus mode, you might have felt the car tighten up and become more responsive\u2014that effect is partly thanks to PADM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since this failure was a rare opportunity, I tested Sport Plus mode repeatedly,<\/strong> and compared to normal operation, the car\u2019s response changes were noticeably reduced. While shift control and engine power feel improved, <strong>the sensation of the body tightening up almost disappears, showing just how significant PADM\u2019s contribution is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Much_Does_PADM_Repair_Cost\"><\/span>How Much Does PADM Repair Cost?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>PADM parts themselves are quite expensive\u2014at the time of writing, one side costs about 220,000 yen. Since these parts come in pairs, replacing both would cost around 440,000 yen just for parts.<\/p>\n<p>Adding labor costs, prices vary by dealer, but <strong>from what I\u2019ve confirmed, replacing one side including parts runs about 300,000 yen, and replacing both sides costs around 500,000 yen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26182\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26182\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20211025173421-1280x866.jpg\" alt=\"PADM on 991\" width=\"1280\" height=\"866\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engine mount on the 991<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_26183\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26183\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20211025173854-1280x996.jpg\" alt=\"Boxster\/Cayman engine mount\" width=\"1280\" height=\"996\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engine mount on the Boxster\/Cayman (981), which also serves as the transmission mount.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Because the repair cost is so high, some owners opt to use used parts or replace the mounts with standard engine mounts (for cars without the Sport Chrono Package) even on Sport Chrono-equipped cars. They then have non-dealer workshops perform coding to prevent error warnings. Standard engine mounts cost about 50,000 to 60,000 yen.<\/p>\n<p>However, personally, I think it\u2019s a shame to lose the fantastic PADM feature, which is a highlight of the Sport Chrono Package. Also, when you eventually sell the car, <strong>the next owner might unknowingly get a car with standard mounts instead of PADM\u2014something quite unfortunate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Warranty_Matters_for_Porsche_Used_Cars\"><\/span>Why Warranty Matters for Porsche Used Cars<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In my case, although the car was used, it was still under the dealer\u2019s warranty, so the repair was free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Used car warranties often come with many conditions, and I\u2019d heard stories about dealers hesitating to cover repairs, so I wasn\u2019t expecting much.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextage.jp\/shop\/tokai\/aichi\/universe_nagoya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universe Nagoya<\/a> dealership where I bought the car was extremely helpful. When I called to report the issue, they apologized sincerely and said, &#8220;<strong>Please get the repair done immediately at a nearby Universe or Porsche dealer.<\/strong>&#8221; They also said, &#8220;<strong>Have the dealer send us the repair estimate. We will cover the costs.<\/strong>&#8221; Their response was very reassuring.<\/p>\n<p>Their outstanding support inspired me to share this experience in my blog. (I never mentioned that I\u2019m a blogger, so this was not a special favor.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3305 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171012175310-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche dealer\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Without warranty, this repair would have been a significant expense.<\/p>\n<p>Major repairs on Porsches often run into hundreds of thousands of yen. Therefore, when buying a used Porsche, I recommend purchasing from certified pre-owned programs or dealers with solid warranties.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong>even if you buy a used Porsche from a non-dealer without warranty, you can still enroll in an extended warranty at a Porsche dealer if you meet certain conditions<\/strong> (note that you cannot enroll within three months after ownership transfer).<\/p>\n<p>I plan to enroll in Porsche\u2019s extended warranty going forward.
