Therefore, I see each generation simply as a car with its own character.<\/p>\n<p>Proof of this is that <strong>even people who can easily afford the latest Porsche still choose to buy used Porsches<\/strong>, and some even pay more for older classic air-cooled Porsches than for new cars.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this demand, used car prices tend to be high overall.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, <strong>high performance doesn\u2019t always equal fun<\/strong>. Lately, I strongly feel that an expensive Porsche isn\u2019t necessarily the \u201chappiest\u201d Porsche.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25041\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25041\" class=\"wp-image-25041 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/7D57969F-B42D-4B15-A66B-658997D3ECA5-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Air-cooled Porsche 964 Carrera 2<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Of course, I understand the thrill of ultra-high performance and don\u2019t intend to deny it. <strong>The insane stability, power, and handling of the 992 and GT3 still impress me today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, I\u2019m moved by the smooth revving feel, controls, vibrations, and engine sound of the air-cooled Porsches, as well as the well-balanced engine, speed, and sound of the water-cooled regular Porsches.<\/p>\n<p>For me, <strong>\u201ca good car,\u201d \u201ca fast car,\u201d and \u201ca fun car\u201d are not always the same thing.<\/strong> What matters is the balance between these, and I like cars that make me feel happy while driving and that I want to drive endlessly.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, the experience I had with the early 991 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/porsche-911-boxster-difference-202108\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carrera S Cabriolet<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/porsche-911-991-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carrera and Carrera S<\/a> left a strong impression on me.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_makes_the_early_991_9911_special\"><\/span>What makes the early 991 (991.1) special?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If I had to describe the 991.1 in one phrase, it would be <strong>\u201can emotional 911.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s slower than the later 991.2 and 992 models, and its rear-engine characteristics and ride feel are inferior to the 997 and earlier. You might think it has no good points, but that\u2019s not where its charm lies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The appeal of the 991.1 is its well-balanced sensory feedback to the driver\u2019s five senses.<\/strong> It\u2019s not about one outstanding performance but a well-rounded level across the board.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24982\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24982\" class=\"wp-image-24982 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/9CD1DC5D-5771-45C0-A703-64922192B4D3-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"911 Carrera S Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24982\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Early 991 Carrera S Cabriolet<\/p><\/div>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Differences_in_engine_characteristics\"><\/span>Differences in engine characteristics<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The 991.1 uses a naturally aspirated (NA) engine. Compared to the turbocharged later models, it has less torque and, more importantly, the torque curve peaks at different RPM ranges. Looking at the torque curves of early and late Carrera models makes this clear.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25826\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25826\" class=\"wp-image-25826 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/screen_shot_2018_09_28_at_8_08_35_pm_fcf7887f7d377531ad5d4b0c6a79d7672e24ec41.jpg\" alt=\"Torque curves of early and late 991\" width=\"599\" height=\"367\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Early (NA) torque: 390 N\u00b7m at 5600 rpm; Late (turbo): 450 N\u00b7m from 1700 to 5000 rpm<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The late model has a trapezoidal torque curve, while the early model\u2019s curve gently slopes upward. To use a bicycle analogy, <strong>the late model is like standing up and pedaling hard from the start, while the early model gradually increases pedal cadence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, the late model is much more powerful from the get-go. It exceeds the early model\u2019s peak torque at just 1700 rpm, allowing quick acceleration without revving high. The early model, on the other hand, builds speed by revving the engine higher in lower gears.<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, the late model\u2019s engine seems better with only advantages. Indeed, it offers superior driving performance: <strong>quick responsiveness in city driving, fast highway merging, and strong corner exit bursts on winding roads.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the early model\u2019s NA engine produces torque as the revs rise, so it lacks instant punch and needs to stay in mid-to-high revs to deliver torque. Highway merging requires downshifting and revving to feel acceleration like the late model.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the late model\u2019s chassis is more refined, offering a slightly firmer ride but improved rear stability and road grip compared to the early model.<\/p>\n<p>By now, you might ask, <strong>what\u2019s so good about the lower-performance early model?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"High_performance_doesnt_always_mean_more_fun\"><\/span>High performance doesn\u2019t always mean more fun<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>But the 991.1 has charms that can\u2019t be measured by specs. This is my personal impression, so it\u2019s subjective.<\/p>\n<p>For example, on a winding road: speed gradually builds, the tach needle climbs in sync, and the engine sound grows louder.<\/p>\n<p>The body and suspension, less tightly tuned than the late model, flex just enough as you enter corners. You feel the load shifting, tire grip, and road surface through the steering.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25781\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/EDE00434-0C5F-4E2F-800E-C901342DAB25-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Ibukiyama Driveway\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 991.1 has a gentle looseness in both speed and cornering. In other words, it offers a wet, analog driving feel rather than a dry, clinical one. Yet, this looseness is perfectly balanced.<\/p>\n<p>The gentle acceleration and cornering softness align perfectly, enhanced by the sound: exhaust and intake notes rise in pitch, syncing with the speed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speed, sound, and torque build together in harmony<\/strong>, stirring my emotions. That\u2019s why I feel \u201cfun\u201d and want to drive endlessly.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d describe the 991.1\u2019s driving feel as <strong>like a movie or drama where the scene\u2019s climax and musical score perfectly match.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a horror film with sudden scares or a heart-pounding action scene, but a story that gradually builds to a climax. Such a film appeals emotionally, <strong>is engaging, doesn\u2019t get boring or tiring, and you want to watch it endlessly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having felt this through test drives, as I said at the start, I call the 991.1 an <strong>\u201cemotional 911\u201d<\/strong> and have been intrigued by it for some time.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_not_an_even_older_911\"><\/span>Why not an even older 911?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You might say, \u201c<strong>If that\u2019s the case, older 911s like air-cooled models, 997, or 996 also have great tuning and balance.<\/strong>\u201d I\u2019m fully aware of that, and my own 964 shares similar charms. I also thought the 996 I drove was a wonderful 911 packed with appeal.<\/p>\n<p>So why choose the 991.1 over those?<\/p>\n<p>Because it\u2019s higher performance than those models, and <strong>it\u2019s the last Carrera with a naturally aspirated engine that you can drive as a modern car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, the 991.2 and latest 992 outperform it, but the PDK transmission is very refined, engine power and reliability have improved, and the chassis\u2014with a longer wheelbase\u2014marks a big shift toward modern ride quality from the 991.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/B8BF2280-B9D9-47E9-9E44-E022BAFD054C-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS (991.1) rear\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That level of performance is just right for me. I like its perfect position: <strong>better than the 997 but not yet turbocharged like the 991.2.<\/strong> Also, it\u2019s appealing as the last model before strict fuel economy and noise regulations led to extensive controls and devices.<\/p>\n<p>This is evident in its large-displacement NA engine, the 7-speed PDK, and shift control during cruising. For example, the latest 992 uses an 8-speed PDK for better fuel economy and shifts gears frequently even with slight acceleration, while the 991 tends to hold gears and increase revs for smoother acceleration (depending on driving style).<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>blend of old-school details and modern performance<\/strong> is the 991.1\u2019s charm and why I chose it.<\/p>\n<p>That said, this is just my personal impression.
