Our Home at the End of 2018<\/h3>\n

Last year at the end of December, my daughters and I spent about a week at my parents\u2019 house, while my husband enjoyed driving alone and going on free-spirited tours during that time. Actually, this is our family\u2019s usual way of spending year-end and long holidays.<\/strong> I get a break from childcare and housework at my parents\u2019, my husband can tour freely like when he was single, the kids have a blast playing with their grandparents, and the grandparents are happy to spend quality time with their beloved grandchildren.<\/p>\n

From an outsider\u2019s perspective, this might seem unusual, but for us, it\u2019s the best way for everyone to be happy in their own way.<\/em><\/p>\n

During this time, my husband even had the chance to test drive a friend\u2019s GT-R on the Royu Driveway.<\/p>\n

Oh, that\u2019s nice~<\/p>\n

About the GT-R<\/h3>\n

When I asked my husband, \u201cGT-R, that\u2019s Nissan, right?<\/strong>\u201d (I must admit, I don\u2019t know much about cars other than Porsche)<\/span><\/p>\n

He said, \u201cYeah, it\u2019s Nissan\u2019s high-end sports car. Quite a while ago, it was reported that during a GT-R test run at Germany\u2019s N\u00fcrburgring circuit, it set the fastest lap time for a production car at the time. Apparently, it was even faster than the Porsche 911 Turbo\u2026\u201d
\n\uff0aGT-R vs Porsche: The Out-of-Track Battle Between Japanese and German Makers<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Wow, I didn\u2019t know that. Checking Nissan\u2019s GT-R website, the price starts at about 10 million yen. That\u2019s impressive\u2026 definitely a luxury sports car (\uff1b\uff9f\u0414\uff9f)! I took a closer look at the GT-R\u2019s design on the site, and I think I\u2019ve occasionally spotted cars with that rear look around town.<\/p>\n

By the way, the model my husband test drove was the 2018 Nissan GT-R Black Edition<\/strong>. The GT-R\u2019s dedicated VR38DETT engine delivers a maximum output of 419 kW (570 PS) and a peak torque of 637 N\u00b7m.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So, as usual, I asked him for his \u201ctest drive impressions.\u201d<\/p>\n

GT-R Test Drive Review<\/h3>\n

Interior Scent<\/h4>\n

To open the door, you push in a recessed part to pop up the lever. When he grabbed the door handle and got inside, he noticed a somewhat nostalgic scent. It wasn\u2019t like any imported car\u2019s smell, but a distinctly Japanese car scent.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what he said. The pop-up lever reminded me of the Lamborghini Hurac\u00e1n I rode before. (I was totally lost at first and panicked. By the way, this is what it looks like\u2193\u2193)<\/span>

\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Even though he said \u201cJapanese car scent,\u201d my image of that is just the strong, mixed smell of air fresheners, pomade, and other things from my grandfather\u2019s car when I was a kid<\/strong>\u2026 My Prius at my parents\u2019 place doesn\u2019t really have much scent\u2026 I\u2019d love to properly smell a pure Japanese car scent once.<\/p>\n

Cockpit \/ Driver\u2019s Seat<\/h4>\n

The cockpit felt less like a super high-performance car and more like somehow calm and composed.<\/strong> It\u2019s a bit tight side-to-side, which gave a comfortable sense of being wrapped in. The front visibility was excellent. The Recaro seats held well and didn\u2019t cause discomfort even during long drives<\/strong>, he said.<\/p>\n

I see\u2026 Indeed, it\u2019s a bit different from the interior image you\u2019d expect from a luxury sports car costing over 10 million yen, but it does have a calm vibe.<\/p>\n

When pressing the start button, the engine quietly wakes up without any flashy effects<\/strong>, he said. At that moment, he felt like he was just driving a normal sports car, but once he got going, he quickly realized it was a completely different beast.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Transmission<\/h4>\n

The GT-R\u2019s transmission is a \u201cdual-clutch transmission<\/strong>,\u201d the same type as Porsche\u2019s PDK.<\/p>\n

There was no shift shock, and before he knew it, the gears kept climbing. He tried downshifting with the paddles to raise the engine revs, and the shift speed wasn\u2019t particularly fast nor slow. It was just right and sufficient.<\/strong> As the revs rose, he could hear mechanical noises from the gears and moving parts and feel the torque surge. Being a modern turbo engine, it didn\u2019t have the sudden torque spikes of older cars. It felt like it delivered ample torque smoothly from low to high revs.<\/p>\n

Interesting. He also said, \u201cCompared to the Panamera Turbo\u2019s engine, the GT-R feels like it delivers torque more evenly. The Panamera Turbo\u2019s torque seems to scale proportionally with revs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Handling<\/h4>\n

He was also very impressed with the handling:<\/p>\n

He hasn\u2019t driven it on a circuit, so he can\u2019t say for sure, but on regular winding roads, the handling felt very straightforward and honest.<\/strong> There\u2019s no gimmick to artificially boost responsiveness; when you turn the wheel, it turns exactly as much as you steer. Compared to imported cars in general, the steering, brakes, and accelerator felt lighter, as if driving a lighter car.<\/strong> But it had none of the flimsy or unstable feeling common in many Japanese cars, so he felt confident driving it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

All-Wheel Drive Performance<\/h4>\n

The GT-R is AWD, but he didn\u2019t feel any typical AWD traits. Whether going a bit too fast or slow, or whether weight was on the wheels or not, it was very easy to drive. His strongest impression was that \u201cthis is a car anyone can drive fast.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t have the \u201cdrive faster, push harder\u201d feel of a GT3. Nor does it have the aggressive, heavy, dual personality of a Panamera Turbo that seems to carve up the road. It\u2019s also very different from Ferrari or Lamborghini, and it doesn\u2019t have the terrifyingly precise handling of a McLaren.<\/p>\n

When I asked, \u201cSo, what exactly is it then? (-_-)<\/strong>\u201d he said,<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to describe, but it\u2019s like a car that doesn\u2019t show off intensity or passion but \u201ccoolly goes insanely fast.\u201d<\/strong> In comparison, it\u2019s like a milder version of the GT3\u2019s excitement and McLaren\u2019s handling. But \u201cmild\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cslow.\u201d Also, the engine and exhaust note are relatively quiet for a car with this power level. Honestly, when focused on driving, you barely notice the sound. So when asked \u201cWhat does the GT-R sound like?\u201d it\u2019s hard to answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I see. Since my husband usually drives cars with \u201cengines that really sing,\u201d it makes sense that the GT-R feels quieter by comparison.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Stability<\/h4>\n

Since the test drive was brief and didn\u2019t include highway driving, he can\u2019t give a precise review, but he said the stability is at a very high level.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even when he picked up speed on a straight, he didn\u2019t really feel the speed. As for the claim \u201cYou can have a conversation at 300 km\/h,\u201d he can\u2019t confirm that, but the stability is definitely more than enough. He doesn\u2019t remember much about ride comfort because he was focused on driving, but he thinks it was quite good. On rough roads, he felt some pitching but no discomfort at all.<\/p>\n

Everyday Usability<\/h4>\n

Another memorable point was that visibility and sightlines while driving are excellent.<\/strong> Although the car isn\u2019t very tall, the driver\u2019s eye point is quite high, making it easy to see the road ahead and very easy to drive. He thinks this is a feature that surpasses any super sports car.<\/p>\n

The car is also thoughtfully designed for daily use, with a very spacious trunk.<\/strong> According to the owner, it can fit two golf bags.<\/strong> My husband said, \u201cNo wonder it\u2019s a car from a country known for its hospitality.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said it\u2019s easy to park without worrying much about wheel stops, so it seems perfectly usable as an everyday car.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A sports car that\u2019s fun to drive, can carry lots of luggage, and doesn\u2019t require worrying about ride height\u2014what a well-thought-out car!<\/p>\n

Overall Impression<\/h3>\n

So, here\u2019s my husband\u2019s overall impression:<\/p>\n

I test drove the 2018 Nissan GT-R Black Edition, and it was better than I imagined. If I had to choose a car in the same class besides Porsche, it would definitely be on my list. The interior quality could be improved a bit, but personally, it\u2019s acceptable. What really attracted me was its high driving performance. It\u2019s an all-weather, ultra-high-performance sports car that\u2019s perfectly fine for daily use.<\/strong> I think I like that contradictory aspect. If I get the chance, I\u2019d like to try the NISMO GT-R.<\/p>\n

Listening to him, I could tell this car really suits his taste.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know much about the GT-R myself, and this is just my first impression as a wife who knows almost nothing about it<\/strong>, but somehow the GT-R gives me the image of a touge (mountain pass) street racer.<\/strong> So if my husband said he wanted to buy a GT-R, I probably wouldn\u2019t ride it much\u2026 ^^; (Sorry for saying this based on just an image without knowing anything about the GT-R)<\/span><\/p>\n
