I remember vividly the day when I first saw the previous generation 8 Series parked in front of a dentist&#8217;s office in my neighborhood, where foreign cars were a rare sight.<\/p>\n<p>As a young boy, I was immediately struck by <strong>the elegance and size of its body, and the significance of the number &#8220;8&#8221;<\/strong>. I stood there, amazed, thinking, &#8220;Wow, BMW makes such a luxurious car!&#8221; It&#8217;s a memory that feels as fresh as yesterday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26030\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26030\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/BMW_840_Ci_1-1280x727.jpg\" alt=\"E31 840Ci\" width=\"1280\" height=\"727\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The previous generation 8 Series<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since then, the previous 8 Series has always been a car that intrigued me. When the current 8 Series was released, I was thrilled and often thought about going for a test drive. (The local BMW dealership is a bit intimidating with their sales pressure, so it&#8217;s not easy to just drop by, haha.)<\/p>\n<p>This time, I was fortunate enough to <strong>get a test drive of the 8 Series Gran Coupe<\/strong>. And it was the 840i, the inline-six gasoline engine model I would definitely choose if I were to buy one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/6B146839-313C-4E81-A1A6-8D455A0D220F-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26022\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/30C62CEF-7482-403A-BD49-BE154DE99307-720x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear seats of the 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"720\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/A222B830-3ABB-4801-A1AF-9B5418D36F18-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"M Sport Suspension of the 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This particular model is a 2020, with an Alpine White body and a stylish Merino leather interior in a bi-color combination of Tartufo (brown) and Ivory, with a beige Alcantara roof lining. It&#8217;s so stunning that it makes you want it just by looking at it.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension is <strong>an Adaptive M Suspension, with the optional active stabilizer that comes standard on the higher-end 850i model<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Drive\"><\/span>The Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Pressing the start switch, the engine comes to life with a sound that&#8217;s not overly loud but definitely audible.<\/p>\n<p>The steering feel is very refined. There&#8217;s no friction to speak of, and compared to regular cars, it&#8217;s a world of difference.<\/p>\n<p>To put it in terms of pens, it&#8217;s like comparing a regular ballpoint pen to a PILOT FriXion pen (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>The steering is lighter than older BMWs, but it offers a smooth, silky rotation feel. It effectively filters out road roughness while providing a clear sense of tire direction and road contact, making it very reassuring to hold.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/05F76889-DFB7-4551-A2D5-A9AB1607F0D2-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Driver's seat of the 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, BMW&#8217;s current automatic transmissions are the best in the world, and the 8 Series starts off very smoothly. There&#8217;s no clunky shift shock. Within just a few meters of driving, I found myself exclaiming, &#8220;<strong>Comfortable!<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I prefer this feeling over the 7 Series I test drove before. In normal mode, it truly feels like an ultra-refined sedan.<\/p>\n<p>The owner mentioned, &#8220;<strong>In normal mode, it feels like an ordinary car, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/strong>&#8221; But it&#8217;s far from ordinary in terms of comfort and ease.<\/p>\n<p>I heard that the owner later switched from run-flat tires to regular radial tires (BMW-approved BS S007), which reportedly made a significant difference, eliminating low-speed bumps and enhancing comfort. It&#8217;s highly recommended.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_Feel\"><\/span>Engine Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>BMW&#8217;s inline-six is often referred to as the &#8220;<strong>Silky Six<\/strong>,&#8221; and for someone like me, the naturally aspirated (NA) engines before turbocharging left a strong impression.<\/p>\n<p>The engine in the 840i produces 340ps at 5000rpm and 51.0kg\u00b7m (500N\u00b7m) of torque from 1600 to 4500rpm. I didn&#8217;t check the specs before the test drive, and I was surprised by how flat the torque was from low revs.<\/p>\n<p>It felt more like a naturally aspirated engine, with a smooth and expansive power delivery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2FBB005F-9457-415B-89C2-70D972864152-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear of the 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For example, in Porsche terms, the turbo engines in the 991.2 and 992 models provide torque from low revs, accelerating before the revs climb. In contrast, this BMW engine feels more NA-like, with a torque curve that seems to rise, despite being trapezoidal on paper.<\/p>\n<p>This is quite refreshing, and while I&#8217;ve experienced turbo engines that don&#8217;t feel like turbos, <strong>this engine&#8217;s natural feel is exceptional. It&#8217;s so well-crafted that even turbo skeptics might be satisfied.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sound, apparently enhanced through the speakers, is indistinguishable from the real thing. In Sport Plus mode, the cabin resonates with a truly pleasant sound, an elegant BMW-style &#8220;whoosh&#8221; that elevates the driving experience.<\/p>\n<p>I pondered why this turbo engine feels so NA-like, and I realized that the sound design plays a significant role. The actual torque is flat, but the sound design cleverly creates an illusion.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether it&#8217;s an illusion or a gimmick, it feels great. I had no complaints, only pleasure while driving.<\/p>\n<p>Even with <strong>four adults on board, the performance was more than adequate.<\/strong> It&#8217;s fast enough to safely avoid hazards, overtake, and pass in any situation.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/bmw-840i\/2\/\">Next Page \u2192 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: Handling and Differences from the Panamera<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Handling<\/h3>\n<p>The first impression is &#8216;<strong>natural and intuitive handling<\/strong>.&#8217; It holds its ground firmly in corners, showing no signs of instability or breaking down. Even with significant lateral G-forces, it presses the road confidently and navigates curves effortlessly.<\/p>\n<p>The low center of gravity and light front end allow it to enter corners smoothly. I&#8217;m curious how the V8 model would feel, but this inline-six model is delightful on winding roads.<\/p>\n<p>The M Sport Suspension with active stabilizers, akin to Porsche&#8217;s PDCC, effectively controls roll, preventing any unsettling sway even with quick steering inputs.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of roll control, it feels like a sports car with a firm suspension, yet the suspension itself is supple and well-damped. This balance is likely thanks to the active stabilizers.<\/p>\n<p>With such enjoyable handling on winding roads, <strong>this car is perfect not only for daily commutes but also for weekend drives and tours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26032\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BD85922B-6308-4A88-A71C-247A03573D42-1-1280x737.jpeg\" alt=\"Test driving the 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"737\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26036\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/A89B9318-FA27-40E3-80CA-10627E3A16AC-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most surprising aspect was the <strong>straight-line stability.<\/strong> The long tunnel on the Royu Driveway has significant undulations, and cars with softer suspensions can struggle to maintain their course. It&#8217;s an ideal road to test straight-line stability, and <strong>the BMW 840i&#8217;s stability is the best I&#8217;ve ever experienced.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just in the top three; <strong>it&#8217;s undoubtedly number one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With just a light touch on the steering wheel, it moves like an arrow. Such straight-line stability is rare. Initially, the steering feels light, as is common with modern cars, making you think you need a firmer grip.<\/p>\n<p>However, it offers remarkable stability, unaffected by road undulations. It doesn&#8217;t feel like the car is being electronically controlled, allowing the driver to simply rest their hands on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>I was genuinely impressed, and I would highlight this steering feel as my favorite aspect of this BMW.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">How Does It Compare to the Panamera?<\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to engine power, it varies greatly by grade, so I&#8217;ll focus on the chassis tuning and handling.<\/p>\n<p>The first noticeable difference is the amount of feedback from the steering. The Panamera communicates even the texture of the road surface. In contrast, the 8 Series filters out such fine details, <strong>focusing on the road condition and contact feel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of steering characteristics, <strong>the Panamera offers a more solid feel, bringing the road closer to the driver<\/strong>. The 8 Series, on the other hand, feels like there&#8217;s a thin blanket between the driver and the road. While the 8 Series offers superior ride quality and luxury, the Panamera might be easier to handle on a track.<\/p>\n<p>Among the Panamera grades, the E-Hybrid feels closest to the 8 Series, while the GTS feels the furthest.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26021\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26021\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/09E92DA5-D772-4FC5-8623-100F6A123652-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Spacious rear seats of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Even with the driver&#8217;s seat adjusted comfortably, the rear seat offers ample legroom.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/53C569CD-8D34-407D-8E09-C6EA75A7510C-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear seat console of the 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>In terms of comfort and livability, the 8 Series wins hands down.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rear seats are surprisingly spacious for a &#8216;coupe,&#8217; likely more so than the Panamera&#8217;s, and they offer excellent comfort. Not only are they spacious, but the ride quality is also superb. While there&#8217;s a bit more bumpiness than the front seats, the comfort level is still high.<\/p>\n<p>I sat in the rear while the driver took on winding roads at a decent pace, and I was <strong>amazed by the lack of unpleasant jolts or discomfort, allowing for relaxed conversation with the person next to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Panamera is designed as a &#8216;sports car&#8217; with as much comfort as possible, aiming for fast lap times at the N\u00fcrburgring. In contrast, <strong>the 8 Series feels like a &#8216;comfortable coupe&#8217; with as much sportiness as possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both cars aim for the same goal and achieve it, but their starting points differ, resulting in different driving experiences.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Overall Impression<\/h3>\n<p><strong>This car is the epitome of a &#8216;sports coupe (sedan).&#8217; <\/strong> I never imagined a car could be so comfortable yet sporty. I used to think I&#8217;d choose a Mercedes SL if I were to buy a luxury coupe, but with the 8 Series&#8217; high level of refinement, I might have to reconsider.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26015\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/EA115DC8-CC49-4825-94B4-E92281814234-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t need the Panamera&#8217;s solid feel and prefer a more relaxed yet fast car, I recommend the 8 Series.
