It\u2019s a <strong>Volcano Grey Metallic with black 20-inch Panamera Design wheels<\/strong>. The GTS-specific blacked-out emblems and other details give it a very sharp and sporty look.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25656 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/543AE0A2-4154-4C03-8875-ECA1B0F0A1B7-720x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS\" width=\"720\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/F3BB74BC-BACB-4D45-8676-5D8A8823AA67-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The interior features a <strong>two-tone leather interior in Black\/Bordeaux Red with smooth leather<\/strong>. Personally, I wasn\u2019t a fan of red interiors in the past, but after experiencing several Porsches with red interiors, I\u2019ve come to really like it.<\/p>\n<p>The seats are 18-way electrically adjustable adaptive sport seats. Previously, our Panamera Turbo had the 14-way comfort seats, which are one step below, but when I sit in them, I get a completely different impression.<\/p>\n<p>The sport seats are far more comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>First, the seat cushion thickness is completely different. The 14-way comfort seats are very thin, and after long drives, my backside would start to hurt. However, <strong>these 18-way sport seats, despite the \u201csport\u201d name, have thick cushions that prevent discomfort even on long drives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25662\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5238ABD5-036A-4A85-A605-26C2093F21DA-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS Interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/641AD9CF-5928-4074-B7F1-95E9187E0F62-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS Seats\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/42C0D840-C207-4372-B0C6-A1AF496480FF-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS 18-way Seats\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, seat comfort varies depending on body type and weight, so ultimately you should decide for yourself. From my experience, recent Porsches, including the 992, have better comfort in the more expensive seats compared to the standard ones. So if you prioritize ride comfort or often drive long distances, I recommend opting for the pricier seats.<\/p>\n<p>Please be careful not to be misled by terms like <strong>\u201cComfort\u201d or \u201cSport Seat Plus\u201d<\/strong>. I think it\u2019s better to interpret those terms in the opposite way.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"V8_40-Liter_Twin-Turbo_Engine\"><\/span>V8 4.0-Liter Twin-Turbo Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The engine sound when starting up is quite loud. Since the engine is the same as the Turbo\u2019s, the sound quality and volume are almost identical. Especially during cold starts early in the morning, you need to be considerate of neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>The launch is very smooth, and <strong>the shifting feels even smoother than the GTS I tested before or the Turbo we owned.<\/strong> Perhaps there was a control update to the PDK in a recent model year.<\/p>\n<p>When driving around town at 30-50 km\/h, you can faintly hear a pleasant \u201cvroom\u201d sound from the rear. This kind of sound staging wasn\u2019t present in the Turbo; in fact, the Turbo felt quieter in town.<\/p>\n<p>As expected from the GTS, they\u2019ve put effort into how the sound is presented, following tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Even at slow speeds, it feels great, and the synchronization of sound, engine revs, and speed creates a very enjoyable feeling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/F3E7B7EE-7D53-4353-AB8A-94E7A6BAB6A2-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS Sports Exhaust\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The power in city driving is sufficient, but the turbo lag is noticeable. Compared to older turbo engines, it\u2019s much improved, but <strong>compared to the base 992 Carrera engine, there is a bit more lag.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, when cruising slowly in 3rd to 5th gear and you want to lightly press the accelerator to move forward smoothly, <strong>there\u2019s inevitably a slight pause.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether this is due to turbo lag or cylinder deactivation, I\u2019m not sure, but there is definitely a time lag.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the base 992 responds instantly to even a slight pressure on the accelerator without needing to fully press down. It\u2019s not quite electric motor quick, but it reminds me of the responsiveness of today\u2019s excellent diesel engines.<\/p>\n<p>On an open road, I pressed the Sport Response button to enjoy the 20-second maximum boost acceleration. The moment I pressed the accelerator deeply, the body was forcefully pushed back.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s certainly fast, but <strong>knowing the Turbo\u2019s aggressive acceleration makes this feel a bit underwhelming.<\/strong> Also, having experienced the lightning-fast response and electric boost torque of the E-Hybrid, the GTS\u2019s performance feels less thrilling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25670\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/4DAA0A74-F22E-49EC-A3CC-5568BB26E483-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Regarding engine and exhaust sound, it\u2019s quite loud\u2014comparable to the Turbo with sports exhaust. However, <strong>the GTS is tuned to be audible even at low speeds, so the difference in volume between full acceleration and normal driving is smaller.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Turbo, on the other hand, is quiet most of the time but roars explosively when you floor it, so the contrast is more striking and leaves a stronger impression.<\/p>\n<p>As for the burbling sound, when you lift off the accelerator, you hear a low \u201c<strong>grumble grumble grumble<\/strong>,\u201d but it\u2019s less frequent and quieter than the Turbo\u2019s sports exhaust.<\/p>\n<p>The Turbo\u2019s burble was more like a loud \u201cbababababa!\u201d\u2014a sound not typical for a sedan.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/panamera-gts-testdrive-202109\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Ride Comfort, Handling, and Overall Impressions of the Panamera GTS<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Handling and Ride Comfort<\/h4>\n<p>This particular car didn\u2019t have rear-axle steering, but <strong>the Panamera\u2019s athleticism is undeniable.<\/strong> It feels almost disrespectful to compare it to typical sporty sedans made for family men, as the cornering speed, stability, and everything else are on a completely different level.<\/p>\n<p>I drove my usual route that I often take in the Boxster, and <strong>at medium and higher speeds, it feels as fast as or even faster than the Boxster.<\/strong> Truly amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Especially when exiting corners, all four wheels grip the road firmly, and the car accelerates aggressively\u2014a feat only possible with all-wheel drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/9AC7BDBF-8057-442F-8695-DEFD5075B274-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, this GTS\u2019s <strong>PDK control is clearly smarter and shifts faster than the Turbo I owned.<\/strong> I believe improvements have been made. While not quite at the level of a 911, the paddle shifts are very quick and sporty-sounding, completing almost instantly. This is a very positive point.<\/p>\n<p>The true appeal of the Panamera lies in this sporty driving experience. While most Panameras in Japan probably spend their time cruising slowly in the city, <strong>I highly recommend taking one on a mountain road at least once.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll experience driving performance so impressive it\u2019s hard to believe it\u2019s a sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to the highway, I led the pack in the passing lane. The stability is impressive. Compared to the Taycan\u2019s razor-flat ride, it\u2019s a bit less composed, but it still slices through like an arrow, accelerating quickly and safely overtaking any car ahead\u2014even mid-corner, shifting seamlessly from inside to outside lanes and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It completes lane changes smoothly in any situation without a hint of unease,<\/strong> a testament to its N\u00fcrburgring heritage. For the Panamera, Japanese highways are a breeze.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25674\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25674\" class=\"wp-image-25674 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/C7053E2A-4B9E-4E72-AD10-E9F0EE606F45-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS Rear Wing\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The wide rear wing is a feature exclusive to the Turbo and GTS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ride comfort in the city feels a bit \u201cbumpy\u201d compared to the Turbo, likely due to the GTS\u2019s sports PASM suspension lowered by 10mm. It\u2019s not a cheap \u201cclunky\u201d feeling, so the driver won\u2019t find it unpleasant, but <strong>passengers sensitive to ride quality, like a wife in the front seat, might complain since it\u2019s a bit firm for a sedan.<\/strong> (If you think of it as a Panamera, you might notice the ride; if you think of it as a 911, the ride is excellent.)<\/p>\n<p>The absence of rear-axle steering is especially noticeable in tight corners. The Turbo I owned with rear-axle steering would turn in sharply, almost wrapping around the corner, but <strong>without it, the GTS feels like a normal cornering experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That said, <strong>this \u201cnormal cornering\u201d is still at an incredibly high level for the GTS,<\/strong> so unless you\u2019re a driving enthusiast, you might not even notice.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Is the GTS Grade Worth Buying?<\/h4>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t experienced the Turbo, 4S, or E-Hybrid, the GTS might seem like a perfect all-rounder. It has many exclusive features inside and out, looks very cool, is fast, sounds great, and is comfortable. I think <strong>most people would be very satisfied with this car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/81D85EEE-B52F-4CE9-BC7C-9582C90ADCBF-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, knowing the existence of the Turbo with the same V8 engine, you can\u2019t help but feel the engine is somewhat detuned. It\u2019s understandable since it\u2019s down 90 hp compared to the Turbo, but the acceleration and response feel a bit unrefined, as if something is holding it back.<\/p>\n<p>If the GTS had used a tuned version of the 4S\u2019s V6 engine instead of the V8, I think the evaluation would be very different. Personally, I would have preferred a highly tuned V6.<\/p>\n<p>Also, in terms of ride comfort, the GTS doesn\u2019t compare as favorably to the Turbo or E-Hybrid. Since its driving performance is so high, this is understandable, but if you prioritize comfort, I recommend test-driving other grades as well.<\/p>\n<p>For winding roads and city driving, I recommend the 4S. The V6 engine feels more agile, and the lighter front end gives a livelier feel. If I were mainly driving in the city, I\u2019d choose the 4S or E-Hybrid.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/386A0B94-D1B0-46A4-974C-0508ACAEF6F5-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera GTS Wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This review may sound a bit harsh, but it\u2019s my honest personal opinion. There\u2019s no problem with the performance, but the more you know about the grades above and below, the more you realize that <strong>the GTS is an all-rounder that feels a bit indecisive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So if I were to recommend the Panamera GTS grade, it would be for those who love the GTS\u2019s exclusive interior and exterior styling, prioritize resale value, and most of all, want a sporty feel.
