Also Comparing with the 718 Spyder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I wrote a test drive article on the current 718 Spyder, but <strong>this time, it\u2019s a review of the previous generation 981 Spyder.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve known several people around me who own the 981 Spyder, so I\u2019ve seen it many times and felt familiar with the car. So, <strong>personally, I love this color so much that I call it \u2018Sharapova Blue.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25442\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/F5B5DAFE-442E-4C6C-8835-E52B9ACCF7C7-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_Sound_and_Feel\"><\/span>Engine Sound and Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The engine start-up sound is very similar to the 981 Boxster GTS. <strong>The engine roars loudly at start, really firing you up.<\/strong> The shift lever has a short stroke, engaging with just a light flick of the wrist, just like recent Porsche manuals.<\/p>\n<p>Once you engage first gear and start moving, it feels more torquey than the 981 GTS, but it\u2019s not as effortless as the manual 718 Spyder. <strong>The operation feel is similar to a typical Porsche manual.<\/strong> Even when starting off slowly, you can already hear the thrilling sound from behind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The naturally aspirated engine\u2019s smooth, lively, singing feel is a hallmark of the 981 and 991.1 era.<\/strong> It\u2019s fun even at 40 km\/h. A smile naturally spreads across your face.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25445\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5E07350B-CEC5-4484-AE5D-E22A6F47CA1F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Compared to the hard-edged, powerful revving feel of the 718 Spyder\u2019s engine, the 981\u2019s engine spins more softly and smoothly. Increasing speed, switching to Sport Plus mode to maximize engine response, and tightening the PADM engine mounts,<\/p>\n<p>The 981 Spyder originally has no PASM but comes with a dedicated sports suspension, so there\u2019s no damping adjustment by mode, but the whole body feels more taut.<\/p>\n<p>The exhaust note from the sports exhaust grows louder and deeper with revs. Around 3000 rpm, the tone and volume closely resemble the 981 GTS, but the sound pressure is different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 400cc larger engine than the GTS squeezes out a more powerful exhaust note from behind.<\/strong> That sound is beyond just pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>I once heard the 981 Spyder\u2019s full-throttle acceleration sound up close in a parking lot with my wife, and she still says, &#8220;<strong>That sound is the best Porsche sound I know.<\/strong>&#8221; I agree completely, and if there were a ranking of regular Porsche models\u2019 best sounds excluding limited editions, <strong>this would definitely be top 3, and personally, number 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how incredible the sound is.<\/p>\n<p>This engine originally comes from the 911 (991) Carrera S and GTS, with a potential output of 400ps, and up to 430ps in GTS tune. However, <strong>in the Spyder, it\u2019s limited to 375ps (276kW) at 6700 rpm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because of that, the top-end rev range can feel a bit less eager. This is also true for the 981 GTS with the same engine, but since this car\u2019s character is more about winding roads than circuits, <strong>most driving enjoyment comes from mid to high rev ranges, so it\u2019s not much of an issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_the_Bubbling_Sound\"><\/span>About the Bubbling Sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I also want to mention the \u201c<strong>bobobobo!<\/strong>\u201d bubbling sound on throttle lift-off. There\u2019s often debate about whether the GTS or Spyder has louder bubbling among the 981s, but after careful comparison this time, I want to settle that debate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/88A55860-0AFC-4299-86D5-F7F9CC2C6B2C-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Regarding the bubbling sound, the GTS wins.<\/strong> Both are quite loud, but the GTS occasionally produces a firecracker-like pop that makes it slightly louder.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong>the Spyder frequently bubbles at mid to high revs but rarely at low revs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the difference from the GTS, which freely bubbles even at low revs. So while the volume difference isn\u2019t huge, <strong>the frequency and number of bubbling sounds differ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/981-spyder\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Handling and Ride Comfort of the 981 Boxster Spyder<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Amazing Handling Performance<\/h4>\n<p>The sound is amazing, but what impressed me even more was the handling.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve experienced both PASM and sports chassis on the 981 GTS before, so I expected the Spyder to feel similar to the GTS sports chassis.<\/p>\n<p>However, that expectation was completely wrong. Honestly, <strong>the handling feel was astonishingly good.<\/strong> I even found myself telling my passenger during the test drive, &#8220;<strong>This might be the most natural-feeling handling car I\u2019ve ever driven!<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/CC099942-39A2-48F8-829A-E903645C8615-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 718 Spyder\u2019s chassis and handling are incredible, but the 981 Spyder feels more supple yet with very quick gain in grip and a very high front-end contact feel. I think the 718 probably has a higher limit performance, but <strong>the driving feel that pleased me more was the naturalness of the 981 Spyder.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to describe, but broadly speaking, among the contemporaries 991 and 981, 992 and 718, the 911s tend to have sharper front-end turn-in, while the Boxster\/Cayman models have a beneficial <strong>\u2018looseness\u2019 and suspension flex.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 911 steers sharply with the front biting and the rear pivoting quickly, while the Boxster\/Cayman initially delays a bit before the car\u2019s path draws a clean circle like a compass.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the general characteristic, but the 981 Spyder <strong>leans more toward the 911-like behavior.<\/strong> It feels sharper and quicker to respond at the front than any 981 or 718 I\u2019ve driven before.<\/p>\n<p>This movement is close to the 991 Carrera S Cabriolet, about 10% sharper than the 981 GTS sports chassis.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s very pleasant and rhythmic to carve through corners. Of course, everyone has their own driving \u2018rhythm,\u2019 so it may not suit everyone, but at least <strong>it perfectly matched my driving rhythm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/D5D1489C-3742-4333-8233-3AD8D8AE1030-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong>the steering and overall body feedback are rich with information.<\/strong> In the brief moment of light roll before cornering, you can clearly feel how the load is distributed.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, you can confidently give the Spyder instructions with throttle and steering, and even on your first drive, <strong>it feels like a longtime partner that understands the driver\u2019s intent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I were to point out the <strong>handling feel difference between the 718 and 981 Spyders,<\/strong> this is the biggest one.<\/p>\n<p>The 981 delivers more feedback through the steering, while the 718 can feel somewhat cyborg-like to some.<\/p>\n<p>Handing the car over to a friend to drive from the passenger seat reveals some negatives. When powering through tight uphill corners, <strong>the rear grip can feel a bit overwhelmed by power and G-forces, causing slight unsettledness.<\/strong> The 718 seems improved here, with stronger rear grip.<\/p>\n<p>Still, <strong>it\u2019s a joy to drive.<\/strong> It appeals strongly to the driver\u2019s senses, drawing them deeper into the car.<\/p>\n<p>There are many cars faster, more luxurious, cooler, and with higher status than this 981 Spyder, but <strong>it clearly shows that fun doesn\u2019t always correlate with those factors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Ride Comfort<\/h4>\n<p>Regarding ride comfort, it\u2019s not bad at all. It\u2019s firm, but not so harsh that it\u2019s unbearable or <strong>painful for city driving.<\/strong> Compared to the GT3, there\u2019s less low-speed jitter, and the 981 retains a certain smoothness unique to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compared to the 718 Spyder, the 981 feels a bit firmer.<\/strong> I think many would find the 718 more comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/0BCF8EB3-3B27-429D-8511-0B14EA848B7F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder seats\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25437\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/A211979A-7EAB-431A-A10D-23B993467AEF-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder rear emblem\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Which Spyder to Buy: 718 or 981?<\/h4>\n<p>Many people might be wondering whether to buy the 718 Spyder or the 981 Spyder. If I were to advise,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You love the cool looks and design of the 718 Spyder.<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t care much about the car\u2019s sound or prefer a deeper tone.<\/li>\n<li>You prioritize speed and power performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019d recommend the 718 Spyder.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you\u2019re more suited to the 981, you probably:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Value driving enjoyment over outright performance (though this depends on personal taste).<\/li>\n<li>Care deeply about sound and prefer a higher-pitched tone.<\/li>\n<li>Prefer a slightly firmer ride over comfort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the way, although prices for the 981 Spyder have dropped somewhat from before, I doubt they will fall much further. The reasons are that it\u2019s <strong>the last naturally aspirated engine before current noise regulations,<\/strong> <strong>far rarer in circulation than the 718 Spyder,<\/strong> and <strong>mostly left-hand manual, which may lead to future overseas exports.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For my kind of hard touring use, an electric soft top is essential, so unfortunately it\u2019s off my list, but if you\u2019re aiming for a 981 Spyder, I personally highly recommend it.<\/p>\n<p>The 981 Boxster Spyder will surely be called a classic someday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/3A6666B6-F77A-4239-8C0F-53C07D18871F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster Spyder\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Recently, I wrote a test drive article on the current 718 Spyder, but this time, it\u2019s a review of the previous generation 981 Spyder.
