For the eighth installment, Porsche Dreamer, who lives in Fukuoka, shares his buying experience, options and driving review of his 718 Cayman<\/strong>. There have hardly been any Cayman articles on this blog, so I\u2019ve been longing to feature one for ages! (Laughs.) I hope you enjoy it.<\/p>\n

\n\u30fbA message for readers: If you\u2019ve decided that one day you\u2019ll own a Porsche, it\u2019s worth getting started sooner rather than later<\/strong>. Timing is especially important if you have a particular specification in mind or want to order options. During a model change, for example, you should expect that ordering may be unavailable for around six months.<\/p>\n

1) How I Decided to Buy a Porsche<\/h3>\n

\u2014 Why did you buy a Porsche?<\/h4>\n

I first developed a strong admiration for Porsche after watching the 1971 film Le Mans<\/em>, which my mother took me to see \u201cfor my car-loving son.\u201d Later, I spotted an ad in the morning newspaper for the April 1972 issue of Car Graphic<\/em>, which featured Porsche. I asked my father to buy it for me, and from then on I knew I would own a Porsche someday. I was eight years old.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Why did you choose the 718 Cayman?<\/h4>\n

When I started thinking, \u201cIt\u2019s about time I got ready to buy one,\u201d in 2016, the Cayman felt like the Porsche closest to the image of the car I\u2019d first dreamed about<\/strong>. I also liked the design of the 981 Cayman and went to test-drive one, but by then it was too late to place an order for a 981. I began researching in earnest and, after thinking it over for several months, decided to buy the 718 Cayman.<\/p>\n

\u2014 What made you take the plunge?<\/h4>\n

The biggest factor was that our children had moved out, making the finances look a little more manageable. My wife also encouraged me. I remember her asking, \u201cWhen are you finally going to buy a Porsche?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u3010<\/span>Standard equipment and available options vary by model year. The prices of both the base car and the options have also changed, I\u2019m told. When I tried the configurator, I noticed the following differences from when I ordered:<\/p>\n

\u30fbThe car itself costs more, but it comes with more standard equipment
\nParkAssist (rear) and Porsche Connect are now standard
\n\u30fbRhodium Silver is no longer available, while other colors, including GT Silver, have been added<\/p>\n

Overall, it looks like the base price has gone up, while option prices have come down a little.
\nA configuration close to mine would probably cost \u00a57,484,000, so it\u2019s a modest increase. The PDK may have become cheaper.\u3011<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Aftermarket options<\/h4>\n

I had paint protection film applied to the rocker panels(including the rear fenders)<\/span>, along with protective film for the headlights. (\u00a581,000 + \u00a520,000 + tax)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Why did you choose this specification and these options?<\/h4>\n

Power and torque<\/h5>\n

When I compared the specs of my previous Subaru B4 3.0R with those of the 981 Boxster and 718 I test-drove, I decided that I didn\u2019t need a Cayman S for its extra power and torque<\/strong>. I was also drawn to the fact that the 2.0-liter engine is essentially a four-cylinder version of the 911.2 engine, while the Cayman S\u2019s 2.5-liter engine achieves its displacement with an unusually large bore. (Incidentally, I\u2019ve heard that BMW considers 500 cc per cylinder to be ideal for its newer engines.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Exterior color<\/h5>\n

\u201cThe 718 had only just launched, so there were very few body colors to choose from\u201d; \u201cMy wife immediately said, \u2018Absolutely no yellow or red\u2019\u201d; and \u201cI wasn\u2019t confident I could keep a black car looking clean.\u201d For those reasons, I chose a distinctly German-looking silver finish.<\/strong> (Rhodium Silver was the only silver available, but I liked it.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Interior color<\/h5>\n

I went with a black interior. A sports car\u2019s cabin should be black\u2014even a classic 911\u2019s!<\/p>\n

Right-hand drive or left-hand drive?<\/h5>\n

Left-hand drive was available for a limited time, but I thought right-hand drive would be better for a car I\u2019d use regularly in Japan. My commute also takes me through intersections with no dedicated right-turn lane, where cars turning right are fairly common, as well as rural roads with lots of blind corners. Those were among the reasons I chose right-hand drive.<\/p>\n

ParkAssist (rear)
\nNone of my previous cars had any parking-assistance features. With the Cayman, though, I thought, \u201cI\u2019ll get sensors at least for the rear,\u201d and opted for them. I didn\u2019t choose front sensors because, on a car with a light-colored body, I prefer the cleaner look of a front bumper without sensors.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rear window wiper<\/h5>\n

Personally, I consider it essential for city driving in the rain and for checking behind me when parking. Note that unlike on most Japanese cars, the rear wiper doesn\u2019t spray washer fluid.<\/strong> I keep a bottle of water in the car instead.<\/p>\n

\n\uff0aRear wiper: A quick rinse with water and a sweep of the wiper clears dust and restores visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Electrically folding mirrors<\/h5>\n

Folding the mirrors when parked is standard practice in Japan. I also like that the mirrors fold when you lock the doors, making it easy to confirm that the car is locked.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Transmission<\/h5>\n

I chose the manual transmission. Selecting gears and shifting make up a big part of the pleasure of driving, in my view.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

19-inch Boxster S wheels<\/h5>\n

Porsche\u2019s catalogs don\u2019t do a great job of showing off the wheels. Few pictures show them as three-dimensional objects, and I had to order the Cayman\u2019s 19-inch wheels without seeing them in person. My wife liked them, so I\u2019m happy with that. The car came with ADVAN Sport V105 tires.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colored Porsche crest wheel center caps<\/h5>\n

Since the body is silver and the brakes are black (standard)<\/span>, I was advised that colored wheel center caps would make a nice accent.<\/strong> I\u2019ve been very happy with them.<\/p>\n

Lane Change Assist<\/h5>\n

I was a little concerned about the Cayman\u2019s rear three-quarter visibility, so I thought I\u2019d give it a try.<\/p>\n

Vehicle tracking system<\/h5>\n

It seems to be standard on US-spec cars. With a Porsche, whether you can get the specification you want depends on timing, and delivery takes more than six months after you order. I\u2019d hate to have a car like that stolen, so I decided to add it.<\/p>\n

Standard seats \/ floor mats<\/h5>\n

Since this is my first Porsche, I decided to start with the standard seats and floor mats.<\/p>\n

Audio \/ communication<\/h5>\n

I did consider adding the BOSE system. But shortly before I placed my order, I heard that when the 911 switched to PCM(Porsche Communication Management)<\/span> as standard equipment, there had been cases where the BOSE system introduced noise that couldn\u2019t be eliminated.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Cayman was also switching to PCM for the 718, so I asked the Porsche Center about it. They weren\u2019t sure yet, so I decided to stick with the standard audio system just to be safe. Instead, I added Connect Plus to get the most out of PCM.<\/p>\n

Winter tires<\/h5>\n

As with my previous cars, I naturally bought a set of winter tires. I believe these were fitted to 18-inch Cayman wheels. (The wheels themselves couldn\u2019t be selected.)<\/span> Apparently, no one else was buying them at the Porsche Center in Fukuoka, but the tires supplied were PIRELLI Sottozero Serie II.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Paint protection film (aftermarket option)<\/h5>\n

I\u2019d heard that on the 911, Cayman and Boxster, the bulging rear fenders are prone to stone chips along their leading edges.<\/strong> After looking into it, I found a shop in Kitakyushu that seemed capable of applying paint protection film properly, so I booked an appointment as soon as my delivery date was confirmed.<\/p>\n

The shop advised that if you\u2019re not planning to drive on a circuit or push the car particularly hard, paint protection film on the front end isn\u2019t really necessary.<\/strong> So I had it applied only to the rocker panels. Since my parking space gets the afternoon sun from the west, I also added protective film on the headlights in the hope of preventing discoloration.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The MY2017 has flared rear fenders, and the shop did an exceptionally careful job, including the areas around them.<\/p>\n

One great thing about paint protection film is that you can wipe off dirt with a sponge without worrying about damaging the paint.<\/strong> That said, even highway driving leaves quite a few marks on the front bumper and trunk lid. If I have the chance next time, I\u2019d protect the front end as well.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Options I didn\u2019t choose<\/h4>\n
Sport Chrono Package<\/h5>\n

With a manual, I wanted to enjoy rev-matching the old-fashioned way and changing gears myself. But I was told that on the 718, Sport Chrono enables automatic rev-matching in SPORT mode.<\/strong> (I looked into it, but it didn\u2019t seem possible to disable only the automatic rev-matching function.)<\/span> So I decided against this option.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, SPORT mode is available even on a standard car without the Sport Chrono Package.<\/strong> Even with a manual, the engine mapping changes and throttle response improves dramatically. The trade-off is slightly worse fuel economy, and the automatic start\/stop system is disabled.<\/p>\n

Even without the Sport Exhaust, lifting off the accelerator abruptly in SPORT mode changes the exhaust note, producing a \u201cba-ba-ba-ba\u201d sound. From inside the cabin, it\u2019s fairly quiet, though\u2026<\/p>\n

PASM<\/h5>\n

I had no plans to drive on a circuit, and for my first Porsche, I wanted to experience the setup Porsche chose as standard.<\/strong> I\u2019d also read reports beforehand saying that the suspension without PASM was good, too.<\/p>\n

PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes)<\/h5>\n

They were tempting, but they\u2019re very expensive, and I\u2019d lose the option of using 18-inch wheels, so I passed.<\/p>\n

Automatic climate control<\/h5>\n

I tend to adjust the temperature and fan speed manually, so I didn\u2019t opt for it.<\/p>\n

3) The Road to Delivery<\/h3>\n

4) Living with a Porsche: How It Performs<\/h3>\n

\u2460 Engine<\/h4>\n

There\u2019s enough power to enjoy driving on the highway and on winding roads. If you accelerate hard in first gear, even a slightly rough surface can make the wheels spin at around 5,000 rpm or above. The only time I find myself wishing for more power is when accelerating hard uphill on a steep climb.
\nI think it feels best when it\u2019s turning around 4,000\u20135,000 rpm at speeds above 70 km\/h.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2461 Manual transmission<\/h4>\n
Shift feel<\/h5>\n

I\u2019m happy with the feel of the six-speed manual. The gearbox is some distance from the shifter, but it slides into gear with a satisfying little \u201cclick, click.\u201d When the car was new, reverse (R) took quite a bit of force to engage, but it seemed to loosen up after about a year.<\/strong> I find it easier if I move the lever into the 1st\/2nd gear plane first, then push firmly from there.<\/p>\n

Clutch<\/h5>\n

The clutch\u2019s engagement point is very narrow. When the car was new, I wondered if it might be a little tricky to operate<\/strong>, but it became easier to manage after about a year.<\/p>\n

The car\u2019s top speed is over 270 km\/h, so the gearing is fairly tall. Below about 10 km\/h, you\u2019re in the world of slipping the clutch (or coasting). The drivetrain is precise and has low running resistance, so on level ground there\u2019s no problem pulling away without revving the engine. But even a slight uphill slope or a turned steering wheel increases resistance, so you need to feed in more throttle to keep the revs from dropping.<\/p>\n

City and highway driving<\/h5>\n

For fuel-efficient city driving on level ground, it\u2019s fine to shift into second at 2,000 rpm, third at 1,800 rpm, fourth at 1,600 rpm and fifth at 1,400 rpm. Put simply, it cruises smoothly at speeds of at least 10 km\/h per gear\u2014for example, 30 km\/h in third. On the highway, though, I do find myself wishing for an even taller cruising gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2462 Handling<\/h4>\n

This is my first Porsche and my first high-end sports car, so I can\u2019t offer an expert assessment, but the handling is simply excellent. The low center of gravity and minimal body roll make the lateral G-forces feel smaller. It made me wonder whether a lot of what I\u2019d previously thought was lateral G-force was actually the effect of gravity as the car rolled.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2463 Fuel economy<\/h4>\n

It\u2019s very good considering the power on offer. I get 8\u20139 km\/L in city driving, including my commute; 9\u201312 km\/L in the suburbs and on mountain roads; and 13\u201315 km\/L on the highway.<\/strong> I only tested this during the break-in period, but at a steady 80 km\/h, it can reach 16 km\/L. Fuel economy does vary with the seasons, though. Running the air conditioning flat out in summer can reduce it by more than 1 km\/L.<\/p>\n

For comparison, my previous car, a Subaru B4(naturally aspirated 3.0-liter flat-six)<\/span>, averaged 7 km\/L in the city, 9 km\/L in the suburbs and 13 km\/L on the highway.<\/p>\n

The 2.0-liter Cayman\u2019s fuel tank holds just 54 liters, but that\u2019s enough for more than 700 km on a long highway trip, which I find perfectly adequate.<\/p>\n

\u2464 Ride comfort and driving feel<\/h4>\n
Ride comfort<\/h5>\n

My car has standard ride height and no PASM, but it has excellent composure and offers a comfortable ride for a sports car.<\/strong> Before the Cayman, I drove a Subaru B4(with Bilstein dampers and 18-inch wheels)<\/span>, and I\u2019d say the firmness is about the same. (The Cayman has much less body roll, though.)<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, the suspension doesn\u2019t have a lot of travel, so you\u2019ll feel some movement over larger bumps in the road.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Brakes<\/h5>\n

The brakes are powerful, just as I expected.<\/strong> The car\u2019s stable body control gives me the confidence to brake firmly, and it\u2019s easy to sense when the ABS is working.<\/p>\n

Visibility<\/h5>\n

Visibility is better than I expected, and the side mirrors give me a particularly wide field of view. I was surprised to find that, because of the relationship between the mirror position and the rear fenders, they can be angled farther outward than on a typical sedan.<\/p>\n

\u2465 How the family feels about it<\/h4>\n

My wife is more eager to ride in the passenger seat than she was in our previous car.<\/p>\n

\u2466 What I like most<\/h4>\n

By today\u2019s standards, it\u2019s not a particularly large car to begin with, but I love how it feels even smaller once I\u2019m behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

5) Must-Have Options for My Next Porsche<\/h3>\n

\u2014 Options I chose and like<\/h4>\n

Reversing camera<\/p>\n

\u2014 Something I wouldn\u2019t choose next time<\/h4>\n

Lane Change Assist\u2026 When a faster or slower car is approaching on the highway, it unquestionably helps with safety, so I\u2019d probably choose it if I were driving on the Autobahn. In Japan, though, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s necessary. In congested city traffic, following its alerts can make it difficult to change lanes, and on mountain roads or narrow streets, it can react to guardrails and other objects, which can be distracting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

6) Things to Keep in Mind<\/h3>\n

Door dings<\/h4>\n

The doors are thick, and the Cayman\u2019s body has a pronounced character line, so I\u2019m careful not to hit the car parked beside me when opening the door.<\/p>\n

Engine and exhaust sound<\/h4>\n

I\u2019m not sure the engine and exhaust note at low speeds really suits the Cayman. To me, it sounds more like a large-displacement V8, so it\u2019s not quite what I\u2019d expect from a downsized, small-displacement turbo engine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brake dust<\/h4>\n

This isn\u2019t unique to the Cayman, but the standard brakes produce a lot of brake dust. I don\u2019t need PCCB, but I wish PSCB(Porsche Surface Coated Brakes)<\/span> could be retrofitted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interior reflections<\/h4>\n

This may not be unique to the Cayman, but there are lots of chrome accents on the steering-wheel spokes, around the shifter and on the glovebox. Direct sunlight often reflects off them and becomes dazzling. It would be nice to have an option to finish those parts in matte black, but even the darker trim seems to have a glossy surface. To cut down on the glare, I\u2019ve applied black matte masking tape used for photography.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

\uff0aAdditional note (2019.1.15)<\/span>
\n\u3010<\/span>There are two things I still don\u2019t know for sure.<\/p>\n

\u2460 The GT steering wheel seems to have black spokes, so reflections might not be an issue, but I haven\u2019t tried one.
\n\u2461 The trim around the shifter may be finished in smooth leather matching the interior if you choose the \u201cLeather Interior Package,\u201d which might reduce reflections. I haven\u2019t seen this in person, either.
\nThis option is also easy to miss in the configurator, and I only noticed it recently. What\u2019s more, there are two options with the same name, but they include different things. The first one can be selected on its own without upgrading the seats or other interior trim to leather, and is probably synthetic leather\u2026\u3011<\/span><\/p>\n

The 911<\/h4>\n

The 911 was the Porsche I dreamed about first, so I can\u2019t help thinking about it.<\/p>\n

\n\u3010<\/span>After writing this review of the 718 Cayman, I actually placed an order for a 911 Carrera. I tried both of the interior options mentioned above when I ordered it.\u3011<\/span><\/p>\n

7) Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n

My daily commute has become a pleasure, and I look forward to heading out on my days off. I can\u2019t imagine life without a Porsche now.<\/p>\n

8) What Does Porsche Mean to You?<\/h3>\n

A dream<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Porsche means to me. When I\u2019m driving the Cayman, it\u2019s a dependable companion.<\/strong> It also has a cute, almost pet-like quality to it.<\/p>\n

\nYou don\u2019t see many 718 Caymans in Rhodium Silver Metallic around town, but it\u2019s a beautiful color that looks fantastic both in the city and on mountain roads. The 718 with a manual transmission feels like a true companion, and this review reminded me what an engaging, appealing car it is.
