And to my surprise, they lent me a <strong>718 Cayman<\/strong> as a loaner car!<\/p>\n<p>That morning, after dropping off my daughters at their respective daycare centers, I headed to the Porsche Center. Upon entering the showroom, right in front of me was a striking blue 718 Cayman.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0248-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It looked incredibly cool, but I thought, &#8220;<strong>There\u2019s no way this is the loaner, right?<\/strong>&#8221; <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Of course not)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0250-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After chatting with Mr. H, my contact there, he explained, &#8220;<strong>The loaner this time is a standard Cayman model, equipped only with the Sport Chrono Package<\/strong>,&#8221; and handed me the keys. Like the Boxster, the Cayman\u2019s key has two buttons to open the trunks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0253-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">The Cayman in GT Silver<\/h3>\n<p>With the keys in hand, I headed to the back entrance where the Cayman was parked. I wondered, &#8220;<strong>I wonder what color the loaner Cayman is\u2014maybe white? Or a bright color?<\/strong>&#8221; Then right before me appeared a silver Cayman. Mr. H said, &#8220;<strong>This is GT Silver. Pretty cool, isn\u2019t it!<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8137\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0257-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wow! It really is! Super cool!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As usual, the sky was overcast that day <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I\u2019m a fog and rain magnet)<\/span>. I wanted to drive on the Royu Driveway if the season were better, but snow and icy roads made that impossible. Also, there wasn\u2019t enough time to visit the pleasant country roads of Sanda <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/sanda-burgring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the famous Sanda Bullring lol<\/a>)<\/span>, so I decided to drive to Ashiyahama, where I could take some nice photos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1273-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">First Impressions of the Cayman<\/h3>\n<p>After driving a bit, my husband said, &#8220;<strong>Ah, so this is the 718 Cayman. The engine sound is totally different from the naturally aspirated 981.<\/strong>&#8221; Indeed, the 718\u2019s engine note was much deeper and less high-pitched than our 981 Boxster GTS\u2019s lively, high-revving sound.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1312-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I asked him, &#8220;<strong>Doesn\u2019t the 718\u2019s engine sound kind of remind you of the air-cooled 911?<\/strong>&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Yeah, definitely. It\u2019s not the pure mechanical sound of an air-cooled engine, but the exhaust note has that air-cooled vibe. Since I was just driving the air-cooled 911, I can tell. Even though it\u2019s a flat-four turbo like the Subaru Impreza STI, it sounds different. The Subaru has a stronger beat and a rougher tone. When started, the 981 goes &#8220;<strong>Vroooom!<\/strong>&#8221; while the 718 sounds more like &#8220;<strong>Grrrrrr!<\/strong>&#8220;\u2014the tone is totally different.<\/p>\n<p>He continued,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Because it\u2019s not a convertible, the Cayman feels more rigid and solid than the Boxster. The 981 Boxster feels a bit looser. The ride is also firmer than the 981 Boxster GTS with PASM in Sport Plus mode\u2014just a bit stiffer, like it\u2019s gripping the road firmly. The chassis has evolved, but if I had to describe it, the Cayman is &#8220;solid&#8221; while the Boxster is &#8220;supple.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even as a passenger, I definitely felt the Cayman\u2019s ride was firmer with better road contact than the Boxster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1302-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, on rough roads there was some residual rocking. I said, &#8220;<strong>The ride isn\u2019t as smooth as I imagined. Maybe because I\u2019m comparing it to the Panamera or the Cayenne I test drove before?<\/strong>&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Yeah\u2026 There\u2019s no harsh impact from the road, so it\u2019s not uncomfortable, but at low speeds on wavy surfaces, the residual rocking is noticeable. This rocking has a longer cycle, unlike the short-cycle rocking you get in a McLaren.<br \/>\n<strong>I wonder if this is just how the Cayman is or if it\u2019s because this model doesn\u2019t have the optional PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management system)\u2026<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019ve heard the 718\u2019s ride is better than the 981\u2019s, but from my memory of driving a 981 Cayman GTS a while ago, the 981 might be better at low speeds <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(probably thanks to PASM)<\/span>. But at higher speeds, there\u2019s no difference, and considering the stronger road contact and solidity, I think most people would say the 718 is better overall (an evolution).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1293-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After driving for a while, I said, &#8220;When I first test drove the Panamera and Cayenne, I was blown away within two seconds of starting, thinking &#8216;<strong>What an incredible car!<\/strong>&#8216; but I didn\u2019t feel that level of excitement with the Cayman. Still, it\u2019s definitely a fantastic car.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy husband replied,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">True, it\u2019s not that overwhelming. But since I\u2019m used to the 981, I think I\u2019ve grown accustomed to its feel. Also, it\u2019s only got 6,000 km on it, so maybe the suspension isn\u2019t fully broken in yet. But the handling is classic Porsche\u2014there\u2019s no disconnect between the line I imagine and the car\u2019s path. Even on gentle curves, you can really feel the grip of all four wheels.<br \/>\n<strong>Someone who\u2019s never driven a Porsche before would be amazed the first time they get behind the wheel of a Cayman.<\/strong><br \/>\nPersonally, the suspension feel reminds me most of the Ferrari 488 among all the cars I\u2019ve driven. Not the same, of course, but the road contact, low-speed ride, and stability gave me that first impression.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on a quiet road, I switched the mode to &#8220;<strong>Sport<\/strong>&#8221; and pressed the accelerator firmly. The Cayman seemed to wake up, accelerating sharply and changing the engine\u2019s tone noticeably. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Since it didn\u2019t have the optional sport exhaust, the &#8220;bububub&#8221; sound was barely audible.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As expected, when you push it, it\u2019s a true &#8220;Porsche.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0296-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After driving in Sport mode for a while, my husband said,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">In Normal mode, the car feels a bit sluggish at low speeds in busy city traffic, but in Sport or Sport Plus, the idle revs rise from 800 to about 1000 rpm, shortening the turbo boost lag. The PDK also becomes more responsive.<br \/>\nSo acceleration is sharp, and it moves like a water strider.<br \/>\nHigh revs come easily, and torque is plentiful.<br \/>\n<strong>I honestly think, \u2018This car is fast!\u2019<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s the base Cayman, not the S, but I think it\u2019s fast enough. Compared to the naturally aspirated 981 Boxster GTS, the turbocharged 718 feels quicker on regular roads.<br \/>\nThe chassis is more stable and planted than the Boxster, so you can corner with more confidence. Whether that\u2019s due to the model difference or the generational gap between the 981 and 718, I think if you drove the Royu Driveway, <strong>the Cayman would be faster than the Boxster.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_4741-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman Sport Mode\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Cayman Interior and Photos<\/h3>\n<p>Later, we parked the car and took some time for photos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8173\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0297-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0298-1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8175\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1308-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking closely at the interior again\u2026 honestly, the standard model without options might not have the &#8220;<strong>luxurious interior you\u2019d expect from a high-end sports car<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1294-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1311-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8167\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1275-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1276-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My husband said,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">If you think of this as a luxury sports car costing over 7 million yen, some might wish for a bit more luxury, at least on the dashboard.<br \/>\nPorsche is a luxury brand, but <strong>that luxury is about performance<\/strong>, not about being a glamorous, opulent car. If you misunderstand that and buy a Cayman as a fashion statement for a luxury sports car, you might be a bit disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding storage, the Cayman is mid-engined, so it has two trunks\u2014front and rear\u2014and the front trunk is quite deep.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8177\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1292-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later, while taking photos from various angles, my husband exclaimed,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">&#8220;What\u2019s this? There\u2019s an unfamiliar cover here!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Looking closer, on both sides inside the rear trunk there were hidden compartments <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(well, not really hidden)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1291-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Opening them revealed small storage spaces. Maybe for car wash supplies?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8171\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1296-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_1297-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the Boxster, this area is where the soft top folds, so since the Cayman\u2019s roof doesn\u2019t open, it\u2019s used as storage.<\/p>\n<p>After the photo session, I took over driving and we headed toward Osaka on the Hanshin Expressway. While riding shotgun, I had only a mild reaction of &#8220;<strong>Well, it\u2019s a Porsche, so it\u2019s a good car<\/strong>,&#8221; but once I drove it myself, I was genuinely impressed by how much it felt like a true &#8220;Porsche.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0266-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The handling was precise, the throttle responded exactly to my inputs, the brakes worked well, and the highway stability and merging acceleration were flawless.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After all, a Porsche is meant to be driven!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I thought again. Without any discomfort or dissatisfaction, we quickly arrived in Osaka city and parked the Cayman nearby. Unlike the Panamera, which is about 2 meters wide and over 5 meters long, the Cayman was so easy to park almost anywhere without checking\u2014how convenient! (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>However, since I had gotten used to the 360-degree park assist on the Panamera, parking the smaller, easier-to-handle Cayman was still challenging. That\u2019s where I parted ways with the Cayman, and my husband took it for a detour home that night, saying,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">The acceleration on the highway is fast, it quickly hits 100 km\/h, and the stability at speed is excellent! At first, the exhaust note felt a bit strange, but it grows on you the more you drive it!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Final Thoughts on the Cayman<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, here\u2019s my husband\u2019s overall impression of the 718 Cayman.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">I think the Cayman offers great value for money. <strong>It starts around 7 million yen, but the driving experience is truly Porsche.<\/strong> Some people look down on the Cayman or Boxster as \u201cbudget Porsches,\u201d but that\u2019s not true at all. <strong>Acceleration, cornering speed, and braking all live up to the Porsche name.<\/strong><br \/>\nFor the performance you get at this price, it\u2019s a bargain. From my experience, <strong>the Cayman\u2019s driving performance often surpasses more expensive cars from other brands.<\/strong><br \/>\nIf I were to buy a Cayman, I\u2019d choose either the base model or the recently released Cayman T. I\u2019d want PASM, the Sport Chrono Package, and if possible, PCCB. Suspension without PASM depends on your preference, but for those focused on driving, it\u2019s fine. <strong>If you prioritize comfort, go with PASM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s true.
