It goes without saying, but the Targa is neither a cabriolet nor a coupe. <strong>The Targa bar, which corresponds to the B-pillar, is located in the center of the body<\/strong>, enhancing rigidity and providing even greater stiffness and safety than a cabriolet.<\/p>\n<p>Originally developed in the 1960s to meet American open car safety standards, the Targa bar disappeared temporarily from the 993 to 997 generations but was revived again from the 991 generation to the present.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/6235876F-B8FC-47AD-812F-60A971719C1E-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"New Porsche 911 Targa\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The test model was a Targa 4 dressed in Python Green.<\/strong> Previously, we featured a Python Green 992 Turbo S in this blog, and it looked incredibly cool. This color suits the Targa body just as well. The dashboard was kept black instead of red to avoid reflections on the windshield.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25158\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/2E8992BD-198E-4E60-8C2F-8DA716CAB8AD-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"New Porsche 911 Targa\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/5F709E65-D536-48AF-B58A-F899929FA537-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of the New Porsche 911 Targa\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The seats were equipped with the Sport Seats Plus option. As I mentioned in previous blog posts, at least for the 992, the Sport Seats Plus option is far more comfortable than the standard Sport Seats. Of course, this depends on individual body types, but <strong>for my build (about 177cm\/74kg), the Sport Seats Plus fit me much better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the thickness of the seat cushion is notably different. This alone can affect ride comfort, with the Sport Seats Plus being noticeably thicker. The standard Sport Seats tend to cause discomfort after long drives due to their thinner cushions, but the Plus version seems to solve that issue.<\/p>\n<p>If I were to buy another 992, <strong>I would definitely choose the Sport Seats Plus option.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the standard Sport Seats have smaller side bolsters but wider seat and backrest widths, making them more comfortable for larger individuals. So, I think slimmer people should opt for Sport Seats Plus, while larger individuals might prefer the standard Sport Seats.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/D9268F04-65A1-4BA1-8473-EAAC35996333-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Carrera Classic Wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking at the exterior, the wheels are 20-inch front and 21-inch rear Carrera Classic wheels.<\/strong> Personally, this is my favorite design, and I was torn until the end about whether to choose these wheels. I think the classic wheels or the Carrera Exclusive Design wheels suit the Targa\u2019s design best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The exhaust features the optional Sport Exhaust with twin pipes positioned closer to the center.<\/strong> The rear hatch area looks slightly slimmer vertically compared to the cabriolet, and from directly behind, the design feels almost identical to the coupe.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_It_Like_to_Drive_the_Porsche_911_Targa\"><\/span>What Is It Like to Drive the Porsche 911 Targa?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The engine start-up sound is somewhat loud, almost the same volume as my cabriolet. By the way, this unit is a MY2021, and after comparing the exhaust area with my cabriolet, <strong>it seems that it does not have a GPF installed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25156\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/DF87AB42-C92F-427C-863C-1D8895668F4F-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"New Porsche 911 without GPF\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The start of driving is very smooth. It feels more refined than the cabriolet, and while it doesn\u2019t quite match the overwhelming dense torque of the Turbo S at launch, the feeling is somewhat similar.<\/p>\n<p>As speed increases, the ride comfort is excellent\u2014milder than the cabriolet or coupe. According to the owner, <strong>the Targa has suspension tuning specific to the Targa model.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the ride feels different from any 911 I\u2019ve driven before.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, despite wearing 20\/21-inch wheels, it feels smoother and more refined than my 19\/20-inch cabriolet. With this ride quality, I doubt anyone would complain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25155\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/DD5C7E67-28E0-4EA0-A6B7-A24DAF914545-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Driver's seat of the New Porsche 911 Targa\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Taking a few corners, the weight and mass of the large rear glass of the Targa are definitely noticeable. It feels as if the center of gravity is somewhat higher, rather than the car simply being heavier overall.<\/p>\n<p>Although the cabriolet is heavier, <strong>its fabric roof keeps the center of gravity very low, making it arguably more agile than the coupe in tight corners.<\/strong> I think this impression is partly because I\u2019m used to it.<\/p>\n<p>However, that doesn\u2019t mean <strong>it negatively affects cornering performance at all.<\/strong> There\u2019s no tendency toward understeer or oversteer, and it\u2019s not difficult to drive. If anything, the difference in agility is minimal, and the car corners with remarkable precision and confidence.<\/p>\n<p>At least at normal road speeds, there\u2019s no need to worry about any drawbacks of the Targa configuration. If anything, on circuits\u2014especially tight corners like Suzuka\u2019s chicane or Fuji\u2019s Dunlop corner\u2014there might be a noticeable effect, but I think only amateurs would notice that.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25157\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25157\" class=\"size-large wp-image-25157\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/9E14FE53-6E80-43ED-B9D1-7C2E916141DF-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"New Porsche 911 Targa front windshield deflector flap\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Targa\u2019s front windshield features a manual deflector flap. Raising it reduces wind turbulence and drumming noise. I personally didn\u2019t find the drumming or wind intrusion bothersome at all.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cruising through corners in Normal mode, the exhaust sound feels quieter than the cabriolet. The owner also said, <strong>\u201cEven with the Sport Exhaust, it\u2019s surprisingly quiet.\u201d<\/strong> I thought this might be due to the large rear glass and its opening mechanism helping with sound insulation.<\/p>\n<p>Once I got used to the driving, I switched to Sport mode and gave the Targa a bit of a workout. The Sport Exhaust flaps open, and the transmission selects one or two gears lower. <strong>The engine revs rise, and pressing the accelerator produces a very satisfying sound.<\/strong> It\u2019s definitely not the \u201cquiet\u201d feeling the owner mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding acceleration, with two people aboard and the Targa\u2019s extra weight, it feels a bit milder than the cabriolet, but I think the difference would be negligible when driving solo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25149\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BAD5DDF6-9F63-437B-8F9C-E1F3A8A2A37E-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"New Porsche 911 Targa\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When lifting off the accelerator, a bold \u201c<strong>bobo-bo-bo-bo!<\/strong>\u201d afterfire sound is heard. Compared to my cabriolet\u2019s normal exhaust, this seems to be the biggest difference. Even with the normal exhaust in Sport mode, you can hear afterfire, but it\u2019s a lighter \u201cpop-pop-pop\u201d sound, not as distinct as this.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the acceleration sound volume is about the same or slightly louder with the Sport Exhaust, but unlike the 981 or early 991 days, there\u2019s no clear volume difference between having or not having the Sport Exhaust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When cornering in Sport mode, the weight difference from the cabriolet becomes even less noticeable.<\/strong> The engine mounts stiffen, and the whole body feels more muscular. The throttle response sharpens, and the 911 reacts exactly as you want.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Targa\u2019s rear is heavier, I thought the tight uphill corners would reveal its behavior best, so I carefully tackled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%e8%8a%a6%e6%9c%89%e3%83%89%e3%83%a9%e3%82%a4%e3%83%96%e3%82%a6%e3%82%a7%e3%82%a4%e3%81%ae%e8%b5%b0%e3%82%8a%e6%96%b9%e3%81%a8%e6%b3%a8%e6%84%8f%e7%82%b9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juhatcho Corner and Royu Esses<\/a>. However, I couldn\u2019t tell any difference with my skill level. The car turns in aggressively on any corner, with strong traction and no hint of front-end insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered, \u201c<strong>The Targa is all-wheel drive!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/B2CAC536-AC97-48EA-92BF-CA620079113E-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"New Porsche 911 Targa\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The reason the Targa is AWD is probably to minimize the impact of the heavy rear. By driving the front wheels as well, weight is distributed to the front, balancing front and rear, and the sophisticated torque control of all four wheels completely eliminates any drawbacks.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s truly enjoyable and fast to drive\u2014without ever making you aware that it\u2019s AWD.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"After_the_Targa_Test_Drive\"><\/span>After the Targa Test Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After the test drive, I was once again impressed by the high performance and the brilliant control systems. What\u2019s amazing about Porsche is that <strong>they don\u2019t just slap on a Targa top or add an AWD system and call it a day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They seriously and carefully tune and develop each grade with a strong focus on \u201cbalance.\u201d This is no mere \u201cgrade\u201d addition; it\u2019s more like adding a new \u201cmodel\u201d that other manufacturers would test and verify extensively before release. The level of refinement is that high.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-25163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/01EE8FFD-F6E6-42E0-9666-1D947609A8AB-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"New Porsche 911 Targa Targa Bar\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the Targa offers the elegant and graceful ride you\u2019d expect from its stylish appearance, while also delivering uncompromising performance as a true 911 when you push it.<\/p>\n<p>I thought carefully about who I would recommend the 911 Targa to.
