{"id":37292,"date":"2019-02-10T06:00:35","date_gmt":"2019-02-09T21:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37292"},"modified":"2021-01-05T15:53:42","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T06:53:42","slug":"panamera-wakayama-kumano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/panamera-wakayama-kumano\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Year\u2019s Drive to Shirahama and Kumano in Wakayama with the Porsche Panamera"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">To Kumano Nachi Taisha in Wakayama Prefecture<\/h3>\n<p>Our family doesn\u2019t really have the tradition of \u201calways going for Hatsumode (New Year shrine visit) on New Year\u2019s Day or during the first three days.\u201d Shrines are crowded during those days, and until around the Taisho era, the New Year was celebrated according to the lunar calendar <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(this year\u2019s lunar New Year is apparently February 5th)<\/span>, so we thought, <strong>\u201cWhy not take our time and go for Hatsumode in February instead?\u201d<\/strong> With that in mind, we finally went as a family of four to the World Heritage site, <strong>Kumano Nachi Taisha, for our Hatsumode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, right after we got married, my husband and I went for Hatsumode at Kumano Nachi Taisha.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20130104-224600-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8896\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20130104-224450-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Back then, we went with the SLK with the roof down.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At that time, even though neither of us has any special abilities, we both felt <strong>\u201cthere\u2019s somehow a presence of a deity here\u201d<\/strong>, which was a mysterious experience. So I always wanted to come here as a family once we had children.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>Kumano is a very hard place to get to.<\/strong> Although it\u2019s in the Kinki region and looks close on the map, it actually takes about four and a half hours from our home even if the trip goes smoothly. No wonder it\u2019s long been called a <strong>\u201clandlocked island.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But maybe because it\u2019s so hard to reach, there aren\u2019t many tourists, so you can visit quietly and peacefully.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a route to Kumano through mountain roads in Nara Prefecture, which is more fun to drive. But since we had a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old in the back seat, we thought the long mountain road would be too tough for them, so this time we chose to take the more relaxed coastal route.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8972\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2019-02-05-19.32.36.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"581\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In other words, we drove all the way to the southernmost tip of Wakayama and then looped around.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Day One of the Drive<\/h3>\n<p>Originally, we planned to <strong>leave leisurely on Saturday morning, stay overnight in Shirahama, and visit Kumano Nachi Taisha on Sunday<\/strong>. However, checking the weekly weather forecast in advance, Sunday was predicted to be heavy rain as usual <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(typical rain woman, haha)<\/span>, so we changed plans and headed to Kumano on Saturday instead.<\/p>\n<p>We planned to leave at 7 a.m., and I got up at 5 a.m. to get ready, but the girls woke up with me, so nothing got done quickly&#8230; We finally left the house after 8 a.m. I strapped the reluctant youngest daughter into her child seat,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8917\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0722-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and off we went.<\/p>\n<p>Though it was the weekend and traffic was heavier, the Hanshin Expressway Bayshore Route was flowing relatively smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026So far, so good, but the real problem was the <strong>single-lane section of the Hanwa Expressway.<\/strong> From the Arida Interchange to Nanki-Tanabe, there is a <strong>single lane stretch that goes on for a whopping 50 km.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8898\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0621-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are a few sections where it becomes two lanes, but <strong>those two-lane stretches are unusually short.<\/strong> Also, if there are cars ahead, even if you move to the passing lane and speed up, it\u2019s difficult to merge back into the driving lane. So you end up just staying in the slow lane and driving slowly\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It makes you want to ask, <strong>\u201cCan this road still be called an expressway!?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As expected, once we entered the single-lane section, there was a slow car ahead, and the following cars were forced to crawl along.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0620-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My husband kept the Panamera\u2019s ACC <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Adaptive Cruise Control)<\/span> on the whole time, but<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cThere was really no point in coming here in the Panamera&#8230; I heard this kind of single-lane expressway only exists in Japan. I guess it\u2019s limited to 70 km\/h with no passing for safety, but crawling along on a modern comfortable car on a road that feels like a train track just makes you sleepier and actually more dangerous!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>he grumbled. Still, having autonomous driving features is handy even in a sports car for times like this.<\/p>\n<p>Glancing at the \u201c<strong>Beware of Drowsiness<\/strong>\u201d signs, the warm, cozy weather and my 5 a.m. wake-up hit me with a strong wave of sleepiness. When I suddenly snapped awake, the car had already exited the expressway and was driving along the coastal road.<\/p>\n<p>The weather was nice that day, and the sea was a deep blue, making the scenery very beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0963-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0964-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, since this road is also used frequently by locals, traffic was heavy and we couldn\u2019t really enjoy driving the Panamera freely\u2026 My husband said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cThe scenery is quite similar to Shikoku, but for some reason the coastal roads in Shikoku have fewer cars and wider lanes, so you can drive really comfortably. Here, it\u2019s not quite the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sounded a bit disappointed. The drive was so monotonous that I tried turning on the sport exhaust and switching to sport mode, experimenting a bit while driving the Panamera for about an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we left the coastal road and headed into the mountains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8906\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0627-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we got closer to Nachi Taisha, I felt a mysterious sensation as if the whole mountain was inhabited by gods, and the whole area felt very sacred. In the past, the roads weren\u2019t as developed as they are now, so making a pilgrimage to Kumano must have been truly difficult.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0633-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After arriving, we parked nearby and went to see Nachi Falls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0632-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nachi Falls has long been revered as a sacred object of worship, and its drop is said to be 133 meters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8908\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0201-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we saw it, the water flow wasn\u2019t very strong, so it felt more like a <strong>sacred, serene waterfall rather than a powerful one.<\/strong> I imagine it must look completely different during the high-water season.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0202-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(The girls were very curious too.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After that, we drove up to the free parking lot near the main shrine <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(there was an 800 yen toll to drive up to the main shrine)<\/span> and went to pray. When my husband and I came before, we walked up the mountain path, which was good exercise, but with kids it\u2019s easier to drive up to this parking lot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8911\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0207-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8912\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0205-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I like Kumano Nachi Taisha because it doesn\u2019t feel overly touristy. There are souvenir shops and local Kumano specialties, but since there aren\u2019t many shops, you can quietly and slowly enjoy your visit.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Heading to Shirahama<\/h3>\n<p>After a leisurely walk and my husband generously tossing coins into the offering box so our family of four could pray properly, we headed back the way we came. I drove toward our accommodation in Shirahama.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0965-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0972-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8915\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0973-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Trying out sport mode, the Panamera didn\u2019t immediately shift up to 6th gear like in normal mode, but stayed in 4th, producing a higher-pitched, sportier sound and allowing me to enjoy a lively drive. It was a brief moment to savor the Panamera when there were no cars ahead. My husband remarked again,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cThe Panamera is really a car you want to drive in sport mode. That\u2019s when it feels like a true sports car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I agreed. After nearly two hours from Kumano, we finally arrived at the hotel. My husband went to park the car and said <strong>the 997 was parked furthest from the hotel entrance.<\/strong> When he came back, he said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cI didn\u2019t do the \u2018tonara\u2019 <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(parking right next to another car even though there\u2019s plenty of space)<\/span> thing. I left a space and parked properly!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He seemed quite pleased, haha.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0655-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, later when we looked down at the parking lot from our room, <strong>there was a minivan parked perfectly between the 997 and the Panamera\u2026 (facepalm)<\/strong> Even though there were other spots open, why would someone choose to park there? I really wish they could understand how we feel (\u2013_-).<\/p>\n<p>Cheering up, the sunset in Shirahama that day was very beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0646-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8918\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0713-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next morning, we went to Shirarahama Beach,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8920\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0715-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8919\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0215-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>took a few photos of the Panamera,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8921\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0962-800x487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and visited the famous tourist spot Senjojiki.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8922\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0234-800x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even though we parked at the edge of the parking lot, when we returned there was again a tonara parker <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(well, it\u2019s a tourist spot, so I guess it\u2019s unavoidable)<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0723-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and the weather gradually worsened, so we headed home, crawling again on the single-lane Hanwa Expressway <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(and I fell asleep again)<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0699-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and safely arrived home.
