I understand the difference between a 4-seater and a 2-seater, and I get the difference between RR and MR layouts. But how do they differ in terms of <strong>ride feel, body rigidity, wind intrusion, power delivery, and sound?<\/strong> And is the price gap really justified? These are the kinds of questions I had.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I had the opportunity to drive a 991.1 (early 991) Carrera S Cabriolet, so I\u2019d like to share a review and compare it with my own 981 Boxster GTS from the same era.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_9911_911_Carrera_S_Cabriolet\"><\/span>The 991.1 911 Carrera S Cabriolet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>test car was a 2013 Carrera S Cabriolet.<\/strong> It featured a stunning Agate Grey exterior with clear tail lenses, classic wheels revealing PCCB brakes, and an interior loaded with options: leather package, 18-way ventilated sport seats plus, and even a carbon steering wheel\u2014truly a top-notch 911.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24982\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/9CD1DC5D-5771-45C0-A703-64922192B4D3-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"911 Carrera S Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24984\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/A4F20AFB-CF97-4EE2-9B6E-FE0793C5944F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"911 Carrera S Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24985\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/8B11DAC6-241E-4FE3-B7C2-8C53A7F03410-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24991\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24991\" class=\"wp-image-24991 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/C77AB168-A747-4D30-A820-54E3297ADD1A-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche seat ventilation switch\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It\u2019s rare to come across a model with seat ventilation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Simply put, it\u2019s gorgeous. <strong>The interior and exterior are breathtaking, but once you start driving, it\u2019s even more impressive.<\/strong> The power delivery is just right with a natural torque curve, the suspension is firm yet supple, and the exquisite naturally aspirated sound from low speeds is simply perfect\u2014the overall balance is outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, after driving this car, <strong>I\u2019m seriously tempted to get an early 991 myself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Differences_in_Ride_Feel_and_Body_Rigidity\"><\/span>Differences in Ride Feel and Body Rigidity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Once you get moving and start cornering, <strong>the 911 Cabriolet feels noticeably more rigid than the Boxster. The difference is clear.<\/strong> That said, the Boxster is also impressively stiff\u2014far beyond what you\u2019d expect from most convertibles\u2014but the 911 Cabriolet\u2019s rigidity is on another level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve driven convertibles more expensive than the 911, but none come close. The design commitment is evident.<\/strong> The 911 Cabriolet\u2019s body is rock solid.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24993\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24993\" class=\"wp-image-24993 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/F211BCA7-64DE-46C0-8D5C-4E3387695D76-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Carbon steering wheel of the 911\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carbon steering wheel<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The 911 Cabriolet responds instantly and precisely even with slight steering input, confidently guiding the front end into corners.<\/strong> Its front-end tracking is very sharp. In fact, the Boxster sometimes feels a bit more RR-like in its front-end behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The solid body shell provides great reassurance, and the roof lining is covered with a hard material, so when the roof is up, you really feel like you\u2019re in a coupe.<\/p>\n<p>This roof lining structure is one of the major differences from the Boxster. The Boxster\u2019s roof lining is just a sturdy fabric under the soft top, but <strong>the 911\u2019s lining is covered with a firm shell, giving it the feel of a coupe\u2019s ceiling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24996\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24996\" class=\"size-large wp-image-24996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/8B7E2D1F-D13B-4481-9B07-B7C4C52B27E5-e1628432774463-1280x757.jpeg\" alt=\"Roof lining of the 911 Cabriolet\" width=\"1280\" height=\"757\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 911 Cabriolet\u2019s roof lining is covered with a firm, solid material.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_25015\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25015\" class=\"size-large wp-image-25015\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/8AD80095-C2D7-4225-B4DA-9ECADDFBC27D-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Roof lining of the Boxster\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Boxster\u2019s lining is just fabric, so it feels soft to the touch.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Differences_in_Suspension_and_Ride_Comfort\"><\/span>Differences in Suspension and Ride Comfort<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Simply put, the 911 Cabriolet\u2019s suspension is firmer, while the Boxster\u2019s is softer. <strong>That said, the 911 Cabriolet\u2019s ride is by no means harsh; it\u2019s free of unpleasant vibrations or jolts and still supple.<\/strong> The Boxster, however, feels even more refined and smooth, with vibrations and bumps softened even further.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24992\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24992\" class=\"wp-image-24992 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/73C8293B-D788-4A35-A6E3-D71925CEAAE9-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"PCCB brakes on the Porsche 911\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PCCB brakes. Because they\u2019re lightweight, there\u2019s a slight bounce at very low speeds, but ride comfort improves as speed increases.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This difference is partly due to suspension stiffness, but I believe it\u2019s mostly down to body rigidity. The 911\u2019s stiffer body transmits more road vibrations directly, while <strong>the Boxster seems to absorb more vibrations through both its suspension and body.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think this is the main reason for the difference in ride comfort.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Differences_in_Engine_Power\"><\/span>Differences in Engine Power<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The engines in the 991.1 and 981 share the same basic block but differ in displacement. <strong>The 911 Carrera S has a 3.8L engine producing 400 hp, while the Boxster GTS has a 3.4L engine with 330 hp.<\/strong> Both are naturally aspirated flat-six engines that deliver a very satisfying sound.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24988\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24988\" class=\"wp-image-24988 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/C9334C91-1EF0-43A6-9E22-985275D4A266-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear end of the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet (991.1)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I like how it hides the \u201cCarrera S\u201d badge and just shows \u201c911\u201d instead, a nice touch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The power difference is obvious. The 911 delivers stronger torque and is faster. However, unlike the turbocharged 992 or 718 models, the torque curve remains very natural, so the power delivery isn\u2019t aggressive but offers a long, smooth acceleration as the revs climb.<\/p>\n<p>In this respect, the Boxster\u2019s engine is quite similar, sharing the same character aside from power output.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Differences_in_Engine_and_Exhaust_Sound\"><\/span>Differences in Engine and Exhaust Sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In terms of volume, the Boxster GTS is definitely louder. But the Carrera S is loud enough. Equipped with a sports exhaust, switching it on produces a truly exhilarating sound. <strong>This is the pure, clear boxer sound that defines a naturally aspirated engine.<\/strong> In Sport and Sport Plus modes, you hear more burbling, but it\u2019s about 10-20% tamer than the Boxster\u2019s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24989\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24989\" class=\"wp-image-24989 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/3B34F1E7-72CD-4B93-9D01-9BB9A81A177F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Sports exhaust of the 991.1 911\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sports exhaust on the 991.1 model<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 911\u2019s sound is more mature and won\u2019t tire you out over long listening sessions. Its larger displacement gives it a slightly deeper tone and a clearer sound than the Boxster. While I love the Boxster\u2019s lively exhaust note, <strong>for long-distance touring, the 911\u2019s engine sound feels more comfortable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_the_Price_Difference_Justified\"><\/span>Is the Price Difference Justified?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Yes, it is. The price doesn\u2019t lie.<\/strong> Of course, that\u2019s to be expected. The 911 costs about 1.5 times as much as the Boxster, so if they felt the same, 911 owners would be upset. The biggest difference is <strong>body rigidity.<\/strong> Although the 911 is a 4-seater with larger openings, which might seem like a disadvantage for rigidity, that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n<p>The sense of security from that rigidity, the planted feel, the solid cornering confidence\u2014you can clearly feel that the 911 is a class above. It\u2019s also more luxurious in terms of sound insulation, roof lining structure, and reduced wind intrusion, making it obvious that the 911 is the higher-tier model.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/B5E85C19-AF0F-4E6B-8E86-5893C32A547A-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, I\u2019m not trying to defend the Boxster. Considering its price, the Boxster\u2019s rigidity, driving quality, and fun factor make it a bargain and an excellent value. It just can\u2019t quite match the 911. It\u2019s not that the Boxster is inferior\u2014it\u2019s that the 911 is simply amazing.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Is_the_911_Cabriolet_For_and_Who_Is_the_Boxster_For\"><\/span>Who Is the 911 Cabriolet For, and Who Is the Boxster For?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If we set aside price and the 2-seater vs. 4-seater difference, the Boxster is probably better for those who prioritize fun, openness, and joy on winding roads. The 911 is the all-rounder, excelling at everything from long-distance cruising to city driving and winding roads.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t misunderstand this as saying the Boxster is more fun or that the 911 is just a luxury coupe.<\/p>\n<p>This is purely a comparison. Both are top-tier, pure sports cars. Neither is a luxury coupe, and <strong>the 911 is very enjoyable on winding roads, while the Boxster can easily handle long-distance drives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24966\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/9D7D9CCC-EFAD-40E3-9060-C2A5878FED9A-720x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In other words, compared to other brands, the Boxster covers a very wide range, but the 911\u2019s range is even broader.
