You\u2019re good.<\/strong>&#8220;\u2014that was my level of skill (?). So why did I struggle so much with driving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/about-practice-driving-boxster3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boxster (MT)<\/a>? Using my university spring break, I <strong>enrolled in driving school as soon as I turned 18 and got my license.<\/strong> And I paid for it all myself with money I earned from part-time jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I had zero interest in cars and commuted daily by bike and train, so I really didn\u2019t need a license at all,<\/strong> yet I was so determined to get one\u2014still a mystery to me. Plus, I was a paper driver for over 10 years after that, haha.<\/p>\n<p>About 15 years later, in October 2015, I removed the AT restriction. The trigger was that <strong>my husband bought a Boxster GTS (MT).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_0999-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After ordering the Boxster, my husband kept telling me,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Since you\u2019ll have the chance to drive a Porsche MT, you absolutely have to remove the AT restriction before delivery.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>I had no intention of driving the Boxster at all back then,<\/strong> so I just ignored him for a while. However, he was so persistent,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cSo, have you signed up for driving school yet? When are you starting? The Boxster\u2019s delivery is coming soon! Hurry up or you won\u2019t make it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>that I reluctantly, very reluctantly <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(lol)<\/span>, decided to go to driving school.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_1001-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">The Process of Removing the Restriction<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a way to remove the restriction by taking a one-shot test at the licensing center, but that\u2019s 100% impossible for me, so I chose to <strong>attend the driving school closest to my home.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(From what I researched, some schools don\u2019t accept AT restriction removal courses.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/12108870_909993229071083_8774782841272589612_n-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Cost<\/h4>\n<p>The cost to remove the restriction varies by school. It\u2019s usually around 50,000 yen (before tax), but the school I went to charged \u00a552,824 <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(\u00a557,050 including tax)<\/span>. This included:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">admission fee, four lessons, examination fee, and textbook cost.<\/p>\n<p>I thought, &#8220;<strong>I don\u2019t really want to \u2018enroll\u2019\u2026 I just want to get it done quickly\u2026 (-_-)<\/strong>&#8221; but that wasn\u2019t possible. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Obviously)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some schools accept payment by cash or credit card on the day, but mine required payment by bank transfer before the first day.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Enrollment Procedures<\/h4>\n<p>Nowadays you can do everything online, so I thought &#8220;<strong>I can apply online and start lessons the same day I go in,<\/strong>&#8221; but the school I went to said &#8220;<strong>you have to visit the school in person at least once to apply.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I thought, \u201cUgh, what a hassle (-_-),\u201d but I scheduled a visit and brought my seal, license, and photo.<\/p>\n<p>There, I received an explanation about enrollment and took a simple aptitude test, then set my <strong>enrollment date and lesson schedule.<\/strong> However, the school didn\u2019t offer enrollment every day; it was only twice a week at fixed times <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Wednesdays at 17:20 and Saturdays at 9:50)<\/span>, so I had to fit my schedule around that.<\/p>\n<p>At that moment, I really thought,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cIf only I had gotten a regular license instead of an AT-restricted one when I had more free time as a student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was also surprised that there was &#8220;<strong>no classroom lecture at all.<\/strong>&#8221; They just handed me a thin textbook,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2019-02-26-11.23.46.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"453\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ameblo.jp\/chike-ok\/entry-12322500528.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*Image source: AT Restriction Removal Exam<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>and then I had to take four practical lessons before the graduation test. I also had to memorize the school\u2019s driving course before the test, so I remember thinking, &#8220;<strong>There\u2019s no way I can pass with just four lessons when I don\u2019t even know anything about car structure or the clutch.<\/strong>&#8221; By the way, you have to graduate within three months of enrollment.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">On Enrollment Day<\/h4>\n<p>On enrollment day, after receiving explanations alongside university students, I started practical lessons immediately. The school had &#8220;<strong>very few instructors qualified to teach restriction removal and only a limited number of lessons available,<\/strong>&#8221; so scheduling was tough.<\/p>\n<p>During the first lesson, although I had studied MT driving on YouTube and read the textbook, I was a nervous wreck. The training car was a Toyota Comfort, said to have a &#8220;<strong>very light clutch and easy controls,<\/strong>&#8221; but I couldn\u2019t even perform basic operations properly\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/1.4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Like this *Image source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usedtaxi-h.com\/g_page\/21434.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2003 Toyota Comfort<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was told, &#8220;<strong>You must keep your clutch and brake pressed to avoid stalling,<\/strong>&#8221; but I stalled immediately after releasing the clutch, stopped at red lights, couldn\u2019t start when it turned green, and sometimes the light turned red again before I could move (lol).<\/p>\n<p>The instructor warned, &#8220;<strong>If you fail to start at a single traffic light during the test, it\u2019s an immediate fail,<\/strong>&#8221; and repeatedly pressed the brake from the passenger seat. I was crushed, thinking, &#8220;<strong>There\u2019s no way I can drive an MT car (-_-),<\/strong>&#8221; on that first day.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Starting Lessons<\/h4>\n<p>In lessons two and three, I practiced <strong>hill starts, railroad crossings, S-curves, U-turns, and crank turns,<\/strong> quite a lot to cover. Looking back, I guess the key was learning the feel of the half-clutch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/800px-Toyota_Confort_DX.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then came the fourth lesson\u2014the evaluation. Passing this meant I could take the test. <strong>By the fourth lesson, I strangely started to get the hang of driving,<\/strong> and the instructor who knew my previous state said, &#8220;<strong>Yeah, you\u2019ve improved a lot,<\/strong>&#8221; which boosted my confidence. Suddenly, the instructor asked,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">\u201cBy the way, why did you decide to remove the AT restriction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cWell\u2026 my husband bought an MT car and told me to learn to drive it\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then asked,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">\u201cOh really? What kind of car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t want to say the model, but I replied,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cIt\u2019s a Porsche Boxster\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The instructor\u2019s calm tone instantly changed to,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat?! A Boxster (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!! You definitely need more practice! I can\u2019t pass you on the evaluation today!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I clearly remember being told that and having to book extra lessons, lol.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, I signed up for two additional lessons <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(about 5,000 yen each, so an extra 10,000 yen)<\/span>, and by the sixth lesson, the instructor said I had improved a lot and gave me the evaluation pass, so I took the test.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/S-curve_in_Drivers_License_Center-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Graduation Test<\/h4>\n<p>I took the graduation test with a university-age guy. He went first, and I sat in the back seat. He stalled and didn\u2019t follow instructions, so I thought, &#8220;<strong>He definitely failed,<\/strong>&#8221; <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(sorry)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to that, I relaxed and drove calmly. The examiner said, &#8220;<strong>Nothing to complain about, you\u2019re good. If anything, you tend to drift too far into the opposite lane when avoiding obstacles,<\/strong>&#8221; but I passed safely.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, that guy also passed, so I honestly thought, &#8220;<strong>Maybe anyone can pass this (-_-)<\/strong>&#8221; (laughs).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9409\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_1018-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(The Boxster was delivered in November 2015, so just in time)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Still, even though I passed, during hill starts, they let me start when I was ready, and for merging, they told me, &#8220;<strong>Take your time and wait until the road is clear,<\/strong>&#8221; so I wondered if it was really okay to remove the restriction without any on-road lessons beyond the school grounds.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Wanting to Master the Boxster MT<\/h3>\n<p>I finally removed the restriction, but when I first drove the Boxster after delivery, I was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/2018\/04\/25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shocked by how heavy the clutch was<\/a>, thinking, &#8220;It\u2019s totally different from the Comfort!&#8221; I\u2019ve been making excuses for three years, and only recently have I been able to drive it around town. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I still can\u2019t operate the clutch smoothly, so there\u2019s a long way to go.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From here on, I think the only way to improve is to get more driving experience. Still, I wonder why the school\u2019s training cars don\u2019t have a stiffer clutch\u2026 Are normal MT cars really that easy to operate?
