She is seven years younger than me and the same age as my wife. She had been a non-driver for about 20 years, but this time she boldly decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/why-sister-got-anew-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy a car<\/a>. The car she chose was a BMW MINI Cooper D (3-door).<\/p>\n<p>At first, she was torn between a Fiat, an Abarth, or a MINI, but she settled on the MINI. The wheels are 15 inches, and the <strong>exterior color is British Racing Green with a white roof.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/97B996B3-A210-4697-BC72-D78CAF8F46EC-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI Cooper D\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/12E5CA33-91B5-4F57-8494-ED80A5E95DEA-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI Cooper D\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This British Racing Green is a very deep, beautiful green. It asserts its green tone strongly whether in bright or dim light, perfectly matching the British atmosphere and the MINI\u2019s design.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"BMW_MINI_Cooper_D_Interior\"><\/span>BMW MINI Cooper D Interior<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The interior color is Carbon Black with Firework standard seats. The seats are quite comfortable. To be precise, they don\u2019t offer exceptional hold or luxury, but on the other hand, there\u2019s nothing bad about them. <strong>The seat cushion thickness, length, and texture are all sufficient, and personally, I like these seats.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24457 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/588CBE2C-190E-4AD2-BDAD-19BC63975FF1-scaled-e1625565948508-1280x771.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"771\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/031CCDA7-7FFF-4C46-84CE-5E6C8FA7555A-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI instrument panel\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/C29AC15B-6169-4F19-A820-EF5C2B8E310A-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI engine switch\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The large circle on the center console houses the navigation system, which is easy to see. The tachometer\u2019s visibility feels a bit poor, but since this isn\u2019t a car focused on sporty driving, that\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the quality <strong>isn\u2019t luxurious but never feels cheap.<\/strong> Some cars in this class use premium materials only where you can touch and cheap plastics elsewhere to create contrast, but <strong>the MINI uses consistent materials throughout, providing a decent tactile feel everywhere, which is quite appealing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_the_BMW_MINI_Cooper_D_Drive_Around_Town\"><\/span>How Does the BMW MINI Cooper D Drive Around Town?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>engine starts with a switch on the center console.<\/strong> The switch itself feels high quality with solid operation and a premium touch. The 1.5L 3-cylinder diesel engine wakes up with relatively loud noise but not much vibration.<\/p>\n<p>At idle, the sound inside the cabin isn\u2019t very loud, but <strong>outside, the diesel\u2019s characteristic rattling is clearly audible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24459\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/EC7F580C-1016-4E84-BED9-7D8552E8001F-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI shift selector\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The shift selector, similar to BMW\u2019s, is put into Drive, and off we go. <strong>This model features a 7-speed DCT<\/strong>, but the start is so smooth it feels like a conventional torque converter automatic. If you didn\u2019t know, you wouldn\u2019t be able to tell if it\u2019s a DCT or a torque converter AT.<\/p>\n<p>Once moving, the diesel noise disappears as if it were a lie. This MINI\u2019s diesel engine hardly sounds like a diesel when driving. <strong>With a maximum torque of 270 Nm between 1750 and 2250 rpm, acceleration and deceleration in town are completely stress-free.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When slowing down at intersections and accelerating out of corners, the acceleration feels very pleasant. Of course, the takeoff from a stoplight and hill climbing are more than adequate, and <strong>there\u2019s virtually no feeling of power shortage in urban driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>at highway speeds during overtaking, the acceleration feels somewhat mild.<\/strong> The data might not show it as slow, but because the low-speed acceleration in town is so good, you naturally expect the same at high speed, making it feel milder than it actually is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/8B4B0CA2-C993-400A-8051-4C5D26181E13-1280x721.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI Cooper D\" width=\"1280\" height=\"721\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ride quality in town gives an <strong>impression of surprisingly firm suspension.<\/strong> Given the 15-inch wheels with 65-profile tires, I expected a softer, more bouncy ride, but that\u2019s not the case at all. The stabilizer bar is probably thicker than usual for this class. At low speeds with big bumps, there\u2019s some side-to-side rattling, but at higher speeds, the ride flattens out. This is a typical European suspension characteristic.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the ride is good, but people used to Japanese cars might find the low-speed manners a bit unsettling.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/mini-testdrive-202107\/2\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Next page \u2192 Taking the BMW MINI Cooper D on a Winding Road<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">How Does the BMW MINI Cooper D Handle on Winding Roads?<\/h3>\n<p>Next, I took it on winding roads. The redline is around 5200\u20135400 rpm, so naturally this isn\u2019t a car to rev hard. Still, I flipped the shift selector to the left for Sport mode and pressed the accelerator. The initial response remains smooth, and it builds speed steadily.<\/p>\n<p>The AT seems to prefer running around 4th gear in most situations, providing <strong>ample acceleration in typical speed ranges.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, because of the torque, if you get carried away revving the engine, the tachometer needle quickly approaches the red zone, which is a bit disappointing. As someone who enjoys revving engines on mountain roads, I honestly don\u2019t like diesel engines much.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s a matter of personal preference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24448\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/C89A09BF-4A7D-4C7A-A4E9-77AE40E3DDF7-1280x721.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI Cooper D\" width=\"1280\" height=\"721\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/58AC1CE9-74AF-407E-95C4-F3BED18FED87-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the BMW MINI\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/16D16CCD-8AB4-4F4B-B6C9-3A9566EBFDE0-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>brakes are very effective and easy to control.<\/strong> If I had to pick one standout feature of this car\u2019s brakes, it would be their <strong>high controllability.<\/strong> Honestly, you don\u2019t see brakes like this often on Japanese cars.<\/p>\n<p>Even some well-known sports cars have excellent stopping power but don\u2019t match the MINI in brake feel that faithfully responds to the driver\u2019s touch. This makes it very satisfying and fun to modulate speed precisely with subtle foot pressure before corners.<\/p>\n<p>And the MINI\u2019s biggest feature is its handling. The catchphrase is <strong>\u201cGo-Kart Feeling,\u201d<\/strong> and driving it on winding roads really makes you understand what that means.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, it\u2019s neutral steer. At speeds comfortable for public road winding, once you turn the steering wheel before a corner, you don\u2019t need to add or reduce steering angle. The steering angle locks in crisply and confidently.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24449\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/D2CF6E0C-4DCF-419E-A39E-189C96385A40-1280x721.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI Cooper D\" width=\"1280\" height=\"721\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At very low speeds, the firm suspension comes into play. The body leans slightly outward with a light roll, balanced front to rear. It then settles firmly, pivoting pleasantly around the armrest area inside the cabin. <strong>There\u2019s absolutely no unease in cornering.<\/strong> It\u2019s hard to believe a car with 65-profile tires can feel this stable. Simply wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a gentle S-curve from Arima Corner to Juhatcho Corner on the Royu Driveway, which can feel unpleasantly linear in poorly balanced cars, but the MINI glides through it effortlessly as if tracing a single perfect line.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the tires are standard eco Hankook Kinergy ECO2s. These tires offer good grip up to a point but become a bit worrisome beyond that.<\/p>\n<p>Since the chassis outperforms the tires, <strong>changing to sportier tires would create a perfect balance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/CFC08925-7C47-499C-97EF-CD30BDDAD9F6-720x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI Cooper D\" width=\"720\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For comparison within the BMW group, I previously test drove the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/bmw-320d-f30-testdrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMW 320d (F30)<\/a>. The MINI\u2019s diesel sounds less \u201cdiesel-like\u201d than the 320d\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The 320d obviously has more power, but the suspension tuning differs quite a bit between BMW and MINI.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, BMWs feel like they put more load on the outer front wheel when cornering, while <strong>the MINI feels like it loads the entire body outward to turn.<\/strong> Even within the same manufacturer, each brand clearly tunes its cars to create a distinct character.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Summary and Closing Thoughts<\/h3>\n<p>Riding the MINI made me realize how important it is to know what you want from a car. If you strongly seek engine excitement, revving feel, and sound, this MINI might not be the best choice.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>for those who value drivability, feel, acceleration, and quietness in town, it\u2019s an excellent car.<\/strong> It handles everything from shopping and long-distance touring to commuting and school runs with ease, and it also performs wonderfully on winding roads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/6DE6E0E2-B1EF-4D5C-B1F0-B53876CC77A5-1280x721.jpeg\" alt=\"BMW MINI Cooper D\" width=\"1280\" height=\"721\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Especially with the MINI, it\u2019s not just about performance specs. Don\u2019t judge the car by power figures alone; cherish its unique worldview. <strong>The MINI is perfect for those who see it as part of their lifestyle and fashion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just an industrial product or a means of transport\u2014it\u2019s a lifestyle accessory that colors your life.
