I\u2019ve previously test-driven a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/981-boxster-sport-chassis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boxster GTS with Sport Chassis<\/a>, but since time has passed and my experience has grown, I wanted to report again.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beautiful_Sound_from_Low_RPMs_The_981_GTS_Sound\"><\/span>Beautiful Sound from Low RPMs: The 981 GTS Sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Starting the engine and setting off, the PDK smoothly gets the car moving. Some used PDKs can be a bit jerky, but this one was very smooth and well-maintained.<\/p>\n<p>In normal mode, it shifts up briskly from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gear. <strong>Although the revs stay around 2000-3000 rpm, the 981 still lets you enjoy the sound at this speed range.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not especially loud, but the exhaust note and mechanical noises are well balanced and pleasant.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24269\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/0BBF384A-3D0C-49A3-936A-8C1C8751CBF2-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Center console of Boxster GTS (981)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With each upshift, the gear engages with a \u201c<strong>bonk!<\/strong>\u201d sound and the engine roars. This is a sound my manual-spec car doesn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>One difference between the PDK and manual versions is this sound. <strong>With the PDK, you get to enjoy sound during both acceleration and deceleration shifts,<\/strong> whereas the manual only has the blip sound on downshifts.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, as a manual driver, I envy this.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Testing_the_Sport_Chassis_and_PTV\"><\/span>Testing the Sport Chassis and PTV<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The initial impression after starting to drive is that <strong>there\u2019s not much difference in ride comfort compared to my PASM-equipped car.<\/strong> It\u2019s very smooth and supple, with a moderate softness and the refined ride quality unique to the 981.<\/p>\n<p>On winding roads, when turning the steering wheel, just like the previous Sport Chassis car I drove, the front end feels more responsive than PASM. It changes direction smoothly and enters corners quickly. I think the timing to initiate the turn is faster than with PASM.<\/p>\n<p>Later, I drove the same course in my own Boxster, which has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/boxster-battery-202106\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mega Life Battery that lightens the front end<\/a>, and even with PASM, the front response was quite good.<\/p>\n<p>The owner also tried both cars and said, &#8220;<strong>The difference isn\u2019t big, it\u2019s just a slight margin.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/DC546662-D06B-4E84-95C8-8D19749E4244-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Boxster GTS (981)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After driving for a while and taking a medium-speed corner, the stability is solid. However, it\u2019s not as tight or rigid as the 718\u2019s suspension. <strong>Even with the Sport Chassis, the 981 doesn\u2019t have the same \u201crigid\u201d feel as the 718.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still, it definitely holds better than PASM. When the owner compared it to my Boxster, which has the genuine 718 lateral member (transverse strut) installed, he said the rear stability and grip feel more secure and reassuring on my car.<\/p>\n<p>To summarize simply:<\/p>\n<p>[Front End Responsiveness]<br \/>\n981 PASM &lt; 981 PASM with Mega Life Battery &lt; 981 Sport Chassis &lt; 718<\/p>\n<p>[Rear Stability]<br \/>\n981 PASM &lt; 981 Sport Chassis &lt; 981 PASM with 718 Lateral Member &lt; 718<\/p>\n<p>Regarding PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring), on PDK cars it controls by lightly braking the inside wheel to improve cornering. However, when casually driving winding roads, the effect is barely noticeable.<\/p>\n<p>On tight, low-speed curves, it does feel like it turns a bit better than normal, but I couldn\u2019t clearly tell whether that was due to the Sport Chassis or PTV.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/981boxster-testdrive-202106\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Ride Comfort and Practicality of the Sport Chassis, Final Thoughts on the 981 GTS<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Ride Comfort and Practicality of the Sport Chassis?<\/h3>\n<p>The 981 Sport Chassis is 20mm lower than the standard chassis, with springs 20% stiffer in front and 25% stiffer in the rear. The roll bars are also reinforced by 10% in front and 36% in the rear.<\/p>\n<p>You can easily see the difference by comparing the wheel arch gaps.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24272\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24272\" class=\"wp-image-24272 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/A84EEA3E-A8DD-47E2-BAB5-C7350F826BD6-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Ride height of Boxster GTS (981) with Sport Chassis\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sport Chassis<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_24271\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24271\" class=\"wp-image-24271 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/231AD0C6-D380-4EA5-BE49-129261780F27-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Ride height of Boxster GTS (981) with PASM\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PASM<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although the Sport Chassis lowers the car, <strong>the owner says he hasn\u2019t scraped anywhere so far, and compared to a GT3, it\u2019s much easier to live with.<\/strong> Indeed, the front lip shape doesn\u2019t protrude much and the center section is a bit shorter, so it offers reasonable practicality.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24274\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/E1E69365-7018-40FE-9910-2FDD7D9E9667-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster GTS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for ride comfort, even after focusing carefully, on normal paved roads there\u2019s little difference from PASM. There\u2019s no harsh jolting or banging, and I think it\u2019s about the same as PASM in Sport Plus mode.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the <strong>\u201cshaking\u201d feeling when going over road joints or manhole covers is greater than with PASM.<\/strong> The body sways more side to side, which I think is mainly due to the stiffer roll bars.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you can accept this is probably the key point in choosing between Sport Chassis and PASM. Personally, it\u2019s within my tolerance, and compared to a GT3 it\u2019s much easier to live with.<\/p>\n<p>The owner currently owns a 991 GT3 and previously drove a 718 Cayman GTS with Sport Chassis, and <strong>he says the 981\u2019s ride comfort is better and makes him want to go on long tours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Final Thoughts and Afterword<\/h3>\n<p>Since it\u2019s the same model I own, honestly I hesitate to praise it too much. But I can\u2019t help it. Good is good. I want to say it without any bias.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 981 GTS is simply the best.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want outright speed, high performance, and cornering speed, the latest Porsches are obviously the way to go. No argument there. But <strong>the feeling of joy even at low speeds and the desire to keep driving forever<\/strong> often come stronger from Porsches of each era.<\/p>\n<p>The charm of air-cooled Porsches is a prime example, and I think the 981\u2019s appeal is of a similar kind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/270334B1-1672-4F70-8426-F6C5A1B354CC-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"981 Boxster GTS seats\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This time, I drove the same model I own but with different options, and it\u2019s clear that Porsche\u2019s character changes with options.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between PDK and manual, and the presence or absence of Sport Chassis and PASM, all affect the feel.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, Porsche options don\u2019t get much credit in the used market. Visual options are somewhat better regarded, but driving-related options especially are often overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>I think this is because buyers don\u2019t focus much on those options and they don\u2019t differentiate the cars enough. But I want to tell anyone buying used:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Porsche\u2019s (driving-related) options make a real difference in feel.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I recommend paying more attention to options when searching for your ideal used Porsche.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"My husband had the chance to test drive a 981 Boxster GTS (PDK) owned by a car enthusiast friend, and he wrote a report about it.
