While it was possible to drive straight home that same day after the event, <strong>after two sessions on the circuit, it would have been tough even for my husband to drive all the way back from Gotemba to Hyogo Prefecture<\/strong>, so we decided to stay another night and drive back via the Hakone Turnpike the next day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10072\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1508-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Actually, this was my third time driving the Panamera on the Hakone Turnpike, but the previous two attempts were far from ideal. But since I hadn\u2019t been able to actually drive it myself, I never really understood its charm or why everyone kept raving about it. I kept wondering, <strong>&#8220;Why does everyone keep saying Hakone, Hakone? Is it really that great a road\u2026?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So this time was my third challenge. With a wry smile, I thought, <strong>&#8220;This is truly a case of &#8216;san-ko no rei&#8217;<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (a Chinese idiom meaning to respectfully visit someone three times to ask for a favor, originating from Liu Bei\u2019s three visits to Zhuge Liang)<\/span><strong>&#8230; (-_-)&#8221;<\/strong> but it seemed I finally had the mountain god\u2019s blessing, and <strong>this time I was able to drive the Hakone Turnpike in clear weather for the first time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a side note, I had long thought it was &#8220;Hakone Turnpai**p**&#8221; and kept mispronouncing it until about two years ago<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (no one ever corrected me\u2026 lol)<\/span>. By the way, &#8220;turnpike&#8221; means a toll (express) road.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Off to the Hakone Turnpike<\/h3>\n<p>To plan a route considering the drive back to our home in Hyogo Prefecture, we first headed to the Odawara toll gate and then planned to return from there. As forecasted, it was bright and sunny from the morning. Great!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10092\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1442-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10057\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1445-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since it was a weekday, traffic wasn\u2019t too heavy, and we smoothly reached the Hakone Turnpike.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10058\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1506-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Alright, here we go!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The toll for the Hakone Odawara main line section is 720 yen. The Royu Driveway costs 410 yen one way if you enter from Ashiya<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (930 yen if you go through to Arima)<\/span>, so I thought, <strong>&#8220;Hakone Turnpike is quite pricey~&#8221;<\/strong>. But since the Hakone Turnpike is longer, maybe that\u2019s to be expected.<\/p>\n<p>After passing the toll gate, I switched the Panamera to Sport and Sport Plus modes and started driving. It quickly became clear that <strong>the Hakone Turnpike is a completely different road from the Royu Driveway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>the road is wider.<\/strong> The wider lanes make driving very comfortable. Also, there are many straights and smooth curves. <strong>The Royu Driveway is mainly a mountain road, making it perfect for practicing cornering and throttle\/brake control<\/strong>, but it requires more driving skill.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, even I, who lack confidence behind the wheel, was able to enjoy a smooth and pleasant drive on the Hakone Turnpike.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1450-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another fresh experience was being able to ride alongside motorcycles on the Hakone Turnpike<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (motorcycles are generally not allowed on the Royu Driveway on weekends and holidays)<\/span>. Despite speeding along such a beautiful road, <strong>my youngest daughter, who was riding shotgun in my husband\u2019s Boxster, was sound asleep the entire time<\/strong>. She really can sleep anytime, anywhere&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We stopped at a nice photo spot along the way to take pictures of the Boxster and Panamera,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1510-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10078\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1511-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10090\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1515-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>then headed to the Anest Iwata Sky Lounge. The last time we came, it was foggy like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20171014162235-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But this time, I was able to take such beautiful photos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1513-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1512-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sunny days really are the best. Last time, I couldn\u2019t see anything from here\u2014not even Mount Fuji\u2014<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10085\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20171014161743-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>but this time, I enjoyed a stunning view of Mount Fuji.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10081\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0639-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10082\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0645-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Afterward, I treated myself to soft serve ice cream sold at the Anest Iwata Sky Lounge shop,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1516-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and by the time I checked the clock, it was already past 1 p.m. We then passed through the Hakone-Izu connecting line section, got on the Shin-Tomei Expressway, and drove about 450 km, arriving home safely that night.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Hakone and Royu Both Have Their Charm<\/h3>\n<p>After driving the Hakone Turnpike this time, I felt that the high elevation<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (Daikanzan\u2019s elevation is 1,011 m)<\/span> and the expansive views below make driving here incredibly refreshing. <strong>I definitely want to drive here during cherry blossom season too.<\/strong> Also, the well-equipped Sky Lounge was a nice bonus, haha.<\/p>\n<p>When I once told someone living in the Kanto area, <strong>&#8220;I\u2019m so lucky to be able to go to the Hakone Turnpike anytime,&#8221;<\/strong> they replied, <strong>&#8220;From my perspective, I envy you being able to go to the Royu Driveway anytime.&#8221;<\/strong> I guess people always want what they don\u2019t have, lol.<\/p>\n<p>Next, I\u2019d love to try driving the Panamera on the Venus Line or some roads around Nagano Prefecture!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hakone Turnpike 3rd Challenge!
