I hope sharing what the experience is really like will be helpful to anyone considering a Porsche.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_How_I_Decided_to_Buy_a_Porsche\"><\/span>1) How I Decided to Buy a Porsche<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_did_you_choose_Porsche\"><\/span>Why did you choose Porsche?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I used to drive a Golf Variant, and that\u2019s when I realized, \u201cGerman cars are great.\u201d I\u2019d ridden in Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW models, but never in a Porsche, so I was curious.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_choose_the_718_Cayman\"><\/span>Why choose the 718 Cayman?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Budget was a big factor, but I also thought, \u201cIf I\u2019m getting one, I want a car that really feels like a sports car.\u201d I considered the previous-generation naturally aspirated 6-cylinder model, but prioritized a newer car\u2014and I wanted Miami Blue.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_sealed_the_deal\"><\/span>What sealed the deal?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I chose the Cayman over the Boxster because it came in the color I wanted\u2014Miami Blue\u2014and <strong>I was concerned about the soft top deteriorating since I park outdoors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Options_and_Specifications\"><\/span>2) Options and Specifications<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Options_and_specifications\"><\/span>Options and specifications<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The main options are 20-inch Carrera S wheels, Sport Chrono and LED headlights. It also has a GT steering wheel, heated seats and power-folding side mirrors.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_did_you_choose_these_options_and_specifications\"><\/span>Why did you choose these options and specifications?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I bought it used, and by the time I started looking, Miami Blue was no longer available as a new-car color, so I made the paint color my priority. I also liked the black wheels\u2014they look great.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_2418.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of a Porsche 718 Cayman\" width=\"900\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_From_the_Search_to_Delivery\"><\/span>3) From the Search to Delivery<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_long_did_it_take_and_what_was_the_process\"><\/span>How long did it take, and what was the process?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>I started looking around the end of the year, made my decision in March and took delivery in mid-April.<\/strong> The dealer was far away, so I made my decision by email and phone without seeing the car in person.<br \/>\nI initially searched for a Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned car, but couldn\u2019t find a Cayman in Miami Blue, so I bought from an independent dealer instead.<\/p>\n<p>I had some reservations about buying a car that wasn\u2019t Porsche Approved, but the dealership\u2019s reviews, the car\u2019s relatively recent model year, Porsche\u2019s reputation for reliability and its Porsche Center service records gave me confidence.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_What_Porsche_Ownership_Is_Really_Like_Performance\"><\/span>4) What Porsche Ownership Is Really Like: Performance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%91%A0_Engine_and_engine_sound\"><\/span>\u2460 Engine and engine sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The sound when I start the engine gets me excited. The sound when shifting up and down in Sport Plus mode is properly sporty, too. It has a deep rumble, so I\u2019m mindful of the neighbors when driving through residential areas late at night. There\u2019s plenty of power for everyday driving.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%91%A1_PDK_transmission\"><\/span>\u2461 PDK transmission<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>It has a PDK transmission, but you can drive it just like a regular car. Gear changes are quick and smooth, with no hesitation.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%91%A2_Ride_comfort_and_driving_feel\"><\/span>\u2462 Ride comfort and driving feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Honestly, I wouldn\u2019t call the ride especially comfortable.<\/strong> The Golf was quieter, had lighter steering and was more comfortable. That said, the Cayman isn\u2019t unbearable\u2014in fact, the ride has a character that makes me want to get behind the wheel again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Now, cars that are too quiet feel a little underwhelming to me.<\/p>\n<p>The Cayman also feels more stable at speeds over 100 km\/h (62 mph). I haven\u2019t driven one on the standard 18-inch wheels to compare, but I think the 20-inch wheels make a big difference.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%91%A3_Handling_and_brakes\"><\/span>\u2463 Handling and brakes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The steering has a reassuring weight, and the car turns just as much as I ask it to. After driving the Cayman, the Golf\u2019s steering feels so light that it almost makes me uneasy.<br \/>\n<strong>The brakes are powerful\u2014and they squeal a lot.<\/strong> I\u2019d heard beforehand that brake squeal is normal, so it doesn\u2019t bother me.<\/p>\n<p>The car also stops in proportion to how firmly I press the brake pedal. After driving the Cayman, the Golf\u2019s lighter-feeling brakes seem strange to me, too. To be clear, though, the Golf is a great car! It drives well, feels solid and inspires confidence.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%91%A4_Fuel_economy_maintenance_and_repairs\"><\/span>\u2464 Fuel economy, maintenance and repairs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The trip computer shows 9\u201310 km\/L (about 21\u201324 mpg US) around town and 12\u201314 km\/L (about 28\u201333 mpg US) on long highway drives.<\/strong> In Normal mode, fuel economy is better than I expected. In Sport and Sport Plus, though, you can practically watch the fuel gauge drop (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>My next inspection was coming up soon after delivery, so I had to get the car inspected almost immediately (sigh). <strong>I had the work done at a Porsche Center, and it cost around \u00a5150,000.<\/strong> I also paid an additional \u00a5100,000 for an extended warranty.<\/p>\n<p>The car is running well, with no issues so far. Even Porsche-approved tires can sometimes be found online for less than you might expect, so I don\u2019t think maintenance necessarily means spending millions of yen.<\/p>\n<p>That said, parts cost more than they do for Japanese cars, so I imagine expenses could add up once replacements are needed.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%91%A5_Family_and_other_peoples_reactions\"><\/span>\u2465 Family and other people\u2019s reactions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>People say the Miami Blue looks even better in person than it does in photos. It also really gets them excited. When I tell people I bought a Porsche, they say, \u201cSeriously!? Why?\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%91%A6_What_I_love_most\"><\/span>\u2466 What I love most<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I love the car\u2019s beautiful overall shape. And I love the excitement I feel whenever I get behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_2421.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 718 Cayman\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1010\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Options_Id_Want_on_My_Next_Porsche\"><\/span>5) Options I\u2019d Want on My Next Porsche<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u30fbThe Sport Chrono package makes the car more fun, so I\u2019d want it included.<br \/>\n\u30fbSince this car has larger-than-standard wheels, I\u2019d want PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management). Road noise is quite noticeable.<br \/>\n\u30fbIf the budget allowed, I\u2019d also want to personalize the interior.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Things_Im_Not_So_Keen_On\"><\/span>6) Things I\u2019m Not So Keen On<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The automatic stop-start system doesn\u2019t seem to work very well. <strong>The engine sometimes shuts off as the car slows down, before it comes to a complete stop<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> (the blog editor experienced this in a 970 Panamera, too)<\/span>, and once it stalled and didn\u2019t restart. I keep the stop-start system switched off.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the more time I spend with the car, the more interested I\u2019ve become in the 911. I\u2019d like my next car to be a 911 Cabriolet because I want to drive a convertible. I\u2019m not sure when that will happen, though\u2026<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_The_Verdict\"><\/span>7) The Verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It may sound contradictory, but it\u2019s \u201c<strong>something I don\u2019t need, yet I\u2019m glad I bought.<\/strong>\u201d Even when I have an errand I\u2019d rather put off, it makes me think, \u201cI want to drive, so I might as well go!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, if you\u2019re interested in a Porsche, my advice is to go for it. Even if it turns out to be different from what you expected, you can always sell it. I recommend buying the model, color and options you want while they\u2019re still the ones you have your heart set on.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_What_Does_Porsche_Mean_to_You\"><\/span>8) What Does Porsche Mean to You?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a car that makes me want to own another Porsche next time.<\/strong> I never used to think much about cars, but now I find myself imagining, \u201cFor my next car, I\u2019ll get this model with these options\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u3010Editor\u2019s Note\u3011<br \/>\nThe Miami Blue 718 Cayman is beautiful, and I can absolutely understand how just looking at it gets you excited. With a Porsche, every drive becomes more than just getting from one place to another\u2014it\u2019s something to look forward to. It\u2019s a wonderful reminder of what makes these cars special.
