{"id":37370,"date":"2019-04-07T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2019-04-06T21:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37370"},"modified":"2019-10-03T10:18:57","modified_gmt":"2019-10-03T01:18:57","slug":"vw-golf-equal-porsche","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/vw-golf-equal-porsche\/","title":{"rendered":"Does the Volkswagen Golf Drive Like a Porsche?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Baby Porsche<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes you hear people say, &#8220;<strong>The Volkswagen Golf is similar to a Porsche<\/strong>&#8221; or that &#8220;<strong>The Golf is like a baby Porsche<\/strong>.&#8221; I&#8217;ve even written on this blog that the ride of our &#8220;<strong>Golf 7<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (1.2-liter turbo engine, 7-speed DSG)<\/span><strong> feels very much like a Porsche<\/strong>,&#8221; so I\u2019d like to revisit that topic here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0020-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In fact, I truly think the Golf\u2019s driving feel is very similar to a Porsche\u2019s. Maybe it\u2019s more accurate to say the &#8220;<strong>quality<\/strong>&#8221; is similar.<\/p>\n<p>To use a meat analogy <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(not that I\u2019m a meat expert or anything, haha)<\/span>, Porsche feels like &#8220;<strong>high-quality lean meat with very little fat<\/strong>.&#8221; On the other hand, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/amg-s63-coupe-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes-Benz S63 I recently drove<\/a> felt like &#8220;<strong>premium marbled meat<\/strong>&#8221; that melts with rich fat the moment you bite into it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pJwHIdHQr5\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/amg-s63-coupe-review\/\">\u30e1\u30eb\u30bb\u30c7\u30b9\u30fb\u30d9\u30f3\u30c4AMG S63 4MATIC \u30af\u30fc\u30da \uff08C217\uff09\u3092\u6240\u6709\u3057\u3066\u307f\u305f\u611f\u60f3<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/amg-s63-coupe-review\/embed\/#?secret=pJwHIdHQr5\" data-secret=\"pJwHIdHQr5\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;\u30e1\u30eb\u30bb\u30c7\u30b9\u30fb\u30d9\u30f3\u30c4AMG S63 4MATIC \u30af\u30fc\u30da \uff08C217\uff09\u3092\u6240\u6709\u3057\u3066\u307f\u305f\u611f\u60f3&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I think the Golf is also lean meat, just like Porsche. Of course, Porsche and Volkswagen are worlds apart in price, so it\u2019s not exactly the same, but the feeling is that &#8220;<strong>while the grade of meat differs, it\u2019s still high-quality lean meat<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hmm&#8230; I\u2019m not sure if my analogy really clarifies things or just confuses me more&#8230; (*_*)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Similarities Between Porsche and Golf<\/h3>\n<p>So far, I\u2019ve driven the new Cayenne, 970 &#038; 971 Panamera, 981 Boxster, 718 Cayman, and 911 (991, 964). Comparing among these, I feel that <strong>the Golf\u2019s driving feel is especially close to the Panamera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/K0000889697_0001-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, the Golf might also feel close to the Macan, but unfortunately, I\u2019ve never driven a Macan <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I\u2019ve only ridden in the back seat)<\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Also, the new Cayenne has a very high driving position, and its &#8220;<strong>ride smoothness was by far the best I\u2019ve ever experienced<\/strong>,&#8221; so after test-driving the Cayenne, honestly, the Golf felt a bit overshadowed.<\/p>\n<p>The 981 Boxster, 718 Cayman, and 911 are true &#8220;<strong>sports cars<\/strong>,&#8221; so I think they feel a bit different from the Golf <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(maybe the GTI version would be closer)<\/span>. Based on my current impressions, I\u2019d say &#8220;<strong>the Golf is closest to the Panamera among Porsches<\/strong>.&#8221; So, here are some specific points where I find similarities.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Firmness of the Suspension<\/h4>\n<p>I described Porsche and Golf as lean meat earlier, but I think the <strong>Golf\u2019s ride is on the firmer side<\/strong>. It has a strong sense of contact with the road, and it absorbs bumps and shocks not softly but with a solid, confident feel. Of course, the Panamera feels much more substantial and grounded, but the Golf is like a lighter version of that.<\/p>\n<p>That said, it\u2019s never &#8220;<strong>too firm to be uncomfortable<\/strong>.&#8221; The ride is actually very smooth. In terms of &#8220;<strong>firm suspension but smooth ride<\/strong>,&#8221; I think the Golf and Panamera are quite alike.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Steering Feel<\/h4>\n<p>I like the Golf\u2019s steering wheel. Personally, I\u2019m not a fan of the thick, soft steering wheel on the S63&#8230; I definitely prefer a <strong>firmer, more tactile feel like a Porsche\u2019s<\/strong>. Regarding the Golf\u2019s steering, its fit and quality remind me of the Panamera.<\/p>\n<p>That said, Porsche steering wheels have a more upright angle <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(how to describe this properly?)<\/span>, and the Panamera\u2019s wheel is thicker and feels more premium than the Golf\u2019s, but in terms of making you feel &#8220;<strong>ready to drive seriously!<\/strong>&#8221; they\u2019re similar.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">High-Speed Stability<\/h4>\n<p>What surprises me most every time I drive the Golf is its &#8220;<strong>high-speed stability<\/strong>.&#8221; Even at 100 km\/h or more, it feels rock-solid and stable. Changing lanes at that speed is completely steady and worry-free. I even feel like <strong>the faster you go, the more stable the car becomes<\/strong>. I think this stability rivals that of the Panamera. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Maybe it\u2019s different at even higher speeds.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our Golf costs about one-seventh of a Panamera Turbo, yet every time I drive on the highway, I\u2019m amazed at how much performance and technology they\u2019ve packed into it.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Body Rigidity<\/h4>\n<p>I think the Golf\u2019s body rigidity is very high. I haven\u2019t driven it in extreme G-force situations or anything like that, but compared to Japanese cars in the same class, <strong>the Golf\u2019s rigidity is far superior.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can feel that the car is solidly built, which gives you confidence on the road. I believe Porsche also has very rigid bodies, so in this respect too, Porsche and Golf feel quite similar.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Sparkling Clean After a Hand Wash<\/h3>\n<p>Our Golf had gotten so dirty <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(not just the body, but inside too \u2014 kids\u2019 snacks everywhere, sand and dirt on the floor mats, it was a mess)<\/span> that I decided to try a hand wash for the first time. I went to a nearby gas station and requested a full service: body wash, waxing, and vacuuming the interior, which took about an hour.<\/p>\n<p>The Golf looked as shiny as new.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1521-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10173\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1519-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1520-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They asked me, &#8220;<strong>Would you like a coating?<\/strong>&#8221; but since the car inspection is coming up this summer, I said I\u2019d think about it and left. But I guess getting a coating would be worth it to keep this beautiful shine.<\/p>\n<p>So, in conclusion, <strong>the Golf really does resemble a Porsche.<\/strong> That\u2019s the quality you expect from a German car.
