This review will focus mainly on the driving experience.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1011.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>This Taycan is the \u2018Turbo\u2019 grade<\/strong>, the second highest trim just below the Turbo S. However, this Turbo is loaded with so many options that it\u2019s almost equivalent to a Turbo S.  <\/p>\n<p>Starting the Taycan is simple: press the start button and shift the selector lever next to the steering wheel to D. There\u2019s no longer a traditional handbrake. So, <strong>just get in, press the button, and shift to D, and the Taycan is ready to go.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1000-1.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan dashboard\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The takeoff is incredibly smooth.<\/strong> Despite the violent instantaneous torque and acceleration described later, there\u2019s no harshness or abruptness in the throttle response; it glides forward gently and smoothly.  <\/p>\n<p>One of the things that impressed me most about the Taycan was the <strong>throttle control.<\/strong> When you press gently, the electric motor\u2019s sudden torque isn\u2019t noticeable, but when you press firmly, the motor instantly delivers its powerful torque.  <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s as if the Taycan reads the driver\u2019s intent and adjusts the throttle opening accordingly.  <\/p>\n<p>Starting off and driving through the usual neighborhood roads, the ride feels very close to our 992 at home. <strong>It\u2019s solid with a strong sense of contact to the road, even letting you feel the texture of the pavement.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Compared to the Cayenne or Panamera, the clarity of road texture is a bit different. <strong>It feels more solid than the Cayenne or Panamera.<\/strong> To be clear, this \u201ctexture\u201d sensation is very subtle and not a criticism of ride comfort.  <\/p>\n<p>Entering mountain roads, the atmosphere from the passenger seat while my wife was driving made me feel like we were in a <strong>sports car.<\/strong> It\u2019s a completely different level of body rigidity and precise cornering feel compared to European sedans of similar size.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1016.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>When my wife pressed the accelerator a bit on an uphill straight, the acceleration was truly amazing. This sensation is unique to electric vehicles. <strong>Even on a slight incline, it feels almost like you\u2019re falling forward.<\/strong> It\u2019s like free-falling in the direction you\u2019re heading.  <\/p>\n<p>Unlike engine cars, there\u2019s no stepped acceleration or torque buildup sensation; the Taycan\u2019s acceleration feels best described as \u201cfalling forward.\u201d  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Porsche_Taycan_on_Winding_Roads\"><\/span>Porsche Taycan on Winding Roads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I took over the wheel and lightly drove on the usual winding roads. <strong>The handling is pure sports car.<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t turn in as sharply as a 911 or spin around like a Cayman or Boxster, but <strong>compared to the Panamera, it clearly feels closer to the 911\u2019s handling.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-23510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/D50CD6C0-180F-49B8-B58A-46673E20367E-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1974.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>This <strong>car is equipped with PDCC and has a heavy battery pack under the floor, resulting in a very low center of gravity,<\/strong> so body roll is minimal. This makes cornering very reassuring.  <\/p>\n<p>The brakes are excellent as well, with superb stopping power and the high level of Porsche-like control still intact. The Taycan mainly uses regenerative braking, but it feels just like a physical brake. The transition from regen to physical braking is so smooth that <strong>you can\u2019t tell it\u2019s happening at all.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>This is the same feeling I had when testing on the circuit.  <\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, driving on familiar winding roads this time, <strong>the lateral G feels stronger than in Porsche engine cars.<\/strong> This is probably due to the minimal roll combined with the inertia from the car\u2019s weight of over 2.3 tons. My wife in the passenger seat said several times, \u201c<strong>I feel more lateral G than usual.<\/strong>\u201d so it\u2019s not just my impression.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_0995.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Switching to Sport Plus mode and pressing the accelerator hard to test acceleration, <strong>the torque surge the moment you press the pedal is incredible.<\/strong> To put it simply, it\u2019s like experiencing G-forces in reverse of a hard brake.  <\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know how it measures on an accelerometer, but it feels like <strong>the G-forces surpass full acceleration in 2nd gear of a GT3.<\/strong> To put it mildly, it feels like the G-force of a GT3\u2019s 2nd gear full throttle hits instantly. For a moment, I held my breath and even felt like I might warp through time and space.  <\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/taycan-testdrive-husband-202105\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Is the Taycan really a Porsche!? Husband\u2019s verdict&#8230;<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage-->  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Driving the Porsche Taycan on the Highway<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Moving to the highway to observe its behavior at speed.<\/strong> First, merging from the toll booth, if you gently press the accelerator, the earlier intense acceleration calms down, and the car accelerates very gently.  <\/p>\n<p>The optional Electric Sport Sound produces a pleasant tone, and the car smoothly and quietly picks up speed. Around just under 100 km\/h, <strong>if you listen carefully, you can hear the motor sound change slightly as it shifts to a high-speed gear.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Of course, there is zero shift shock.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1022.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Increasing the pace a bit, I moved from the driving lane to the passing lane to overtake, then back to the driving lane. Even with somewhat rough inputs, nothing untoward happened. There was no roll or instability at all.  <\/p>\n<p>Driving at a speed to lead the passing lane in line with surrounding traffic, the first thing my wife said from the passenger seat was, \u201c<strong>The aerodynamics are amazing.<\/strong>\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it feels like <strong>the car is slicing through the air.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Often, for cars with good aerodynamics, people say they \u201ccut through the air wall,\u201d but the Taycan feels a bit different.  <\/p>\n<p>As speed increases, it feels like an air path or rail forms around the body, eliminating side-to-side sway and stabilizing the car firmly. <strong>There\u2019s almost no wind noise, and acceleration remains endlessly smooth.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1007.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>What stands out at high speeds is how flat the ride is. Honestly, <strong>it\u2019s the flattest ride I\u2019ve ever experienced in any car. It\u2019s truly astonishing.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Your line of sight doesn\u2019t move up or down.  <\/p>\n<p>Road joints or repair patches don\u2019t matter. You just hear the \u201cthump!\u201d or \u201cclunk!\u201d sounds, but you hardly feel any impact or body movement.  <\/p>\n<p>On circuits, when driving a GT3 above 180 km\/h, the flatness becomes very pronounced, but the Taycan offers that level of flatness even around 100 km\/h.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1034.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Traffic got a bit heavier, so my wife took over driving and turned on ACC to cruise. <strong>From the passenger seat, the smoothness was so seamless that I couldn\u2019t tell if it was the human or the car driving.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>My wife has experienced ACC in many cars and said, \u201c<strong>This is the smoothest and most reassuring one I\u2019ve ever used.<\/strong>\u201d  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Is the Taycan Really a Porsche?<\/h3>\n<p>After driving the Taycan thoroughly in city, winding roads, and highway, my impression is that <strong>the Taycan is a car Porsche has crafted with absolute seriousness.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Initially, there were rumors it was aimed at Tesla as a rival, but <strong>in my opinion, this is beyond rivalry. The chassis and suspension performance completely dominate.<\/strong> It feels like Tesla can\u2019t catch up at all.  <\/p>\n<p>The driving performance is so excessively refined that it makes you think, <strong>\u201cIt\u2019s an EV, so maybe they didn\u2019t have to go this far.\u201d<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s built so solidly that <strong>personally, I want to take longer trips with it.<\/strong> I want to tour places like Kanto or Tohoku without worrying about range or charging points, but <strong>the current environment makes that a bit difficult, which is the biggest drawback.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1005.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Next, regarding whether the <strong>Taycan is truly a Porsche<\/strong>, here are my personal thoughts. While the Taycan is wonderful, it doesn\u2019t have the athletic performance of a GT3, and it would likely lose to a 911 on circuit lap times.  <\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>its feel is unmistakably \u2018Porsche.\u2019<\/strong> After just a few dozen meters, it\u2019s clear the feel is close to a 911, with handling characteristics that aren\u2019t overly quick or abrupt, steering gain that increases gradually with speed, and no sense of unnatural behavior.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The Taycan\u2019s steering feel shares traits common to all Porsche models.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1023.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan Turbo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Recently, Kazuo Shimizu said something interesting. Whenever he asks Porsche engineers, \u201c<strong>What is Porsche\u2019s strength?<\/strong>\u201d engineers from every era always answer the same: \u201c<strong>We test thoroughly. Testing is everything.<\/strong>\u201d He said this might be the key to why Porsche can build cars that feel so Porsche-like.  <\/p>\n<p>I feel the Taycan was tested and developed with terrifying thoroughness, with a strong awareness that it must be a Porsche. <strong>Even though the powertrain changed to electric motors, the engineers clearly didn\u2019t want to be told it\u2019s \u2018not Porsche-like\u2019 and refused to use the powertrain difference as an excuse.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>The development engineers must have poured their pride into creating the Taycan. I think the Taycan is uncompromisingly a Porsche, especially its <strong>chassis performance is undeniably Porsche.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s my impression from this test drive of the Porsche Taycan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"My husband wrote a test drive report on the Porsche Taycan he recently had the chance to drive.
