If you read today\u2019s article, you\u2019ll understand exactly why I felt that way. Back in February, my husband <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/compare-with-718-and-981-boxstergts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rode shotgun in a friend\u2019s 718 Boxster GTS<\/a>, but<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"qYez8dWhUQ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/compare-with-718-and-981-boxstergts\/\">718 \u30dc\u30af\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc GTS\u3068\u3001981 \u30dc\u30af\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc GTS\u306e\u4e57\u308a\u6bd4\u3079\u3002<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/compare-with-718-and-981-boxstergts\/embed\/#?secret=qYez8dWhUQ\" data-secret=\"qYez8dWhUQ\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;718 \u30dc\u30af\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc GTS\u3068\u3001981 \u30dc\u30af\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc GTS\u306e\u4e57\u308a\u6bd4\u3079\u3002&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>this time, thanks to the owner\u2019s kindness, I was able to take it for a roughly 10-minute test drive.<\/strong> And, <strong>as usual, my husband put together a detailed report<\/strong>, which I\u2019d like to share with you below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1755-800x547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"547\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">First Impressions of the 718 Boxster GTS<\/h3>\n<p>After adjusting the seat position, I pressed the clutch. It felt slightly lighter than the 981. I had heard that \u201c<strong>due to turbocharging, the low-end torque is lacking, making it harder to start off in a manual<\/strong>,\u201d but in reality, it wasn\u2019t that bad, and engaging the clutch didn\u2019t feel particularly sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>However, like the 981, the 718\u2019s clutch doesn\u2019t seem to have just one distinct bite point. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(It\u2019s hard to describe well.)<\/span> I\u2019m not sure if this is a uniquely Porsche sensation or just my limited experience with manuals, but when I first drove the 981, I felt the half-clutch zone was quite broad, and at first, when I thought the clutch had engaged and released it, the car would suddenly jerk.<\/p>\n<p>With the 718, there was a similar sensation of \u201c<strong>thinking the clutch engaged, then it suddenly fully engages<\/strong>,\u201d so like the 981, it\u2019s a clutch that takes a bit of getting used to.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1721-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Differences Between the 981 and 718<\/h3>\n<p>After getting used to the clutch and setting off, the impression was completely different from when I rode shotgun last time. Everything felt different.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Handling<\/h4>\n<p>The first difference I noticed was the <strong>handling<\/strong>. It was incredibly smooth yet had a strong sense of grip. It\u2019s clearly an evolution over the 981. At the initial turn-in, the difference isn\u2019t that noticeable, but the <strong>grounding feeling mid-corner<\/strong> and the <strong>precision of line tracing<\/strong> felt about 10-20% better than the 981.<\/p>\n<p>It was as if the car was wearing tires with noticeably stronger grip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10397\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1718-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It even gave me the illusion that my driving had improved, allowing me to take corners with more confidence. This is exactly what you expect from a <strong>normal evolutionary model change<\/strong>. I think the 718\u2019s handling is simply more refined.<\/p>\n<p>While the 981 doesn\u2019t feel understeery during normal driving, after driving the 718, the 981 feels somewhat understeery by comparison. That\u2019s how much the 718\u2019s handling <strong>turns in precisely as much as you steer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The handling character hasn\u2019t changed much from the 981. The initial turn-in is a bit gentle, without the quick, sharp feel of an Italian car, but once you start turning, <strong>the steering input and the car\u2019s response feel perfectly proportional and natural to the brain \u2014 very Porsche-like.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Ride Comfort<\/h4>\n<p>The ride comfort is definitely better. <strong>While the 981 isn\u2019t bad, the 718 is even more refined.<\/strong> It\u2019s not just good for a sports car \u2014 it\u2019s good for a car in general. Speaking frankly about smoothness, I think it\u2019s <strong>far better than many family cars or minivans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1723-800x603.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"603\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the way, I previously wrote a review of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/718-cayman-testdrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">base Cayman without PASM<\/a>, and I felt the <strong>718 Boxster GTS had better ride comfort.<\/strong> Of course, since I didn\u2019t drive on the same roads, this is just an impression, but <strong>at least at low speeds, the GTS felt smoother.<\/strong> The fact that the 718 Boxster GTS has larger tires yet feels smoother is probably thanks to PASM <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Porsche Active Suspension Management system)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"J3lD26x4P8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/718-cayman-testdrive\/\">718 \u30b1\u30a4\u30de\u30f3\u3092\u8a66\u4e57 \u2212 981\u3068\u3069\u3053\u304c\u5909\u308f\u3063\u305f\uff1f<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/718-cayman-testdrive\/embed\/#?secret=J3lD26x4P8\" data-secret=\"J3lD26x4P8\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;718 \u30b1\u30a4\u30de\u30f3\u3092\u8a66\u4e57 \u2212 981\u3068\u3069\u3053\u304c\u5909\u308f\u3063\u305f\uff1f&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Engine<\/h4>\n<p>The engine revs well. I expected it to feel a bit sluggish because it\u2019s turbocharged, but it actually revs better than I imagined. With the 981\u2019s naturally aspirated engine, the volume rises and the tone shifts from low to high, so you can roughly tell the revs without looking at the tachometer.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the 718\u2019s sound quality changes less, so it\u2019s harder to tell by sound alone, and when I glanced at the tachometer, I was often surprised thinking, \u201c<strong>Oh, it\u2019s revving that high!<\/strong>\u201d That\u2019s probably why it gave me the impression of revving well. Above 2000 rpm, there\u2019s always a generous amount of torque.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0663-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"718 Boxster GTS\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the numbers, <strong>the 981 Boxster GTS has 330 PS, while the 718 Boxster GTS has 365 PS.<\/strong> That\u2019s a difference of 35 PS.<\/p>\n<p>However, during a pleasant winding road drive like this test, while you can feel the torque difference in the low-speed 2nd gear pull, <strong>otherwise, the power feel isn\u2019t that different from the 981.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That said, with the difference between NA and turbo plus this horsepower gap, if you really floor the accelerator, you\u2019d probably notice a big difference.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Sport and Sport Plus Modes<\/h4>\n<p>I switched between Normal, Sport, and Sport Plus modes. Like with the 981, I felt that <strong>Porsche is really a car that shines when driven in Sport mode or higher.<\/strong> As you change modes, the car\u2019s body feels more muscular, like a weight has been lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, PASM suspension and engine mounts stiffen up, increasing directness, and on the tight corners of the Royu Driveway, the 718 feels like a fish in water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1739-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before entering a corner, I pressed the clutch and downshifted. I tried to blip the throttle to match revs, and <strong>it matched surprisingly well.<\/strong> With the 981, you have to be more precise with revs or there\u2019s a bit of a jolt, but with the 718, it\u2019s like <strong>you\u2019ve suddenly become better at rev-matching<\/strong> \u2014 it just clicks perfectly on the first try.<\/p>\n<p>I later learned, and a reader also commented on this blog, that <strong>from the 718 onwards, the car automatically blips the throttle even in Sport mode (auto-blip).<\/strong> With the 981, you had to be in Sport Plus for that, so this is another big difference between the 981 and 718.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1730-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Sport Exhaust<\/h4>\n<p>Regarding the sport exhaust, <strong>turning it on doesn\u2019t change the sound quality or volume as much as on the 981.<\/strong> It just adds a bit more deep bass and beat, and the volume gets louder. Put another way, <strong>even with the sport exhaust off, it already produces a fairly good deep exhaust note.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sound quality is subjective, so it\u2019s hard to say which is better, but if you like deep bass, the 718 might suit you better; if you prefer higher tones, the 981 might be more your style.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Chassis<\/h4>\n<p>Comparing the 981 and 718, I felt the <strong>chassis improvements were the most remarkable.<\/strong> The 718 has a newly added rear member that reinforces the rear subframe, and I heard the rear wheels are 0.5 inches wider.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10402\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1733-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are probably other suspension and PASM tuning changes as well, but as mentioned earlier, the <strong>improvements in chassis performance<\/strong> are most evident in the handling and ride comfort.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Overall Impression<\/h3>\n<p>From the perspective of a 981 owner, my impression of the 718 Boxster GTS is that it\u2019s a <strong>very capable, well-rounded Boxster.<\/strong> It embodies the worn-out phrase \u201cthe latest Porsche is the best Porsche\u201d perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>I doubt many people would complain about the 718 Boxster\u2019s performance. If there are complaints, it\u2019s probably just a matter of personal taste or different expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking hypothetically, <strong>if you were blindfolded and test drove the 718 Boxster GTS alongside a more expensive open-top car, many might find the 718 superior.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how cost-effective and impressive this car is.
